Intro: I’m a quite handy do-it-all, but I’m in no way an experienced bicycle mechanic. So I’m learning a lot working on my bike.
I crashed my bike (2002 Bergamont Grandurance 4) last week and I had to swap the derailleur pad/hanger/dropout for a new one.
However, I didn’t take pictures or had a very close look when I removed the snapped dropout and now I’m unsure about the current installation.
The bike uses a Shimano Sora group and the derailleur has this silver metal ring-with-lip on the bolt that goes into the dropout. There is an adjustment screw that is fixed with Loctite.
As you can see on the pictures, there is a small gap between the dropout and the derailleur. I thought that I might need to move the “ring-with-lip”-athingy a bit so that the dropout slots into the recess, but it seems to small.
I’m not confident enough to unscrew the adjustment screw (yet) to find out what its purpose is.
So… My questions (finally 😉) are:
– What is that ring-with-lip part and what is its purpose?
– What is that adjustment screw used for?
– Is that gap acceptable?
Any tips/comments on the installation?

That screw is the B-screw. Its used to adjust the distance between the largest cassette cog and the upper pulley. That tab on the silver thing is something to stop the rd from rotating around the mount bolt too far. Check the park tool videos for more deatiled info i guess.
