Im thinking to take a fleece for my trip. but i dont know if is to much or not. I will wear a long sleeve merino inside a insulated jacket for the wind and if is raining over the insulated a Waterproof jacket. I was thinking to add with that a fleece if im getting really cold but it will be to much right ? i dont know exactly how to get the best arrangements of clothes, it’s for my trip in Iceland, August to September middle.

for the fleece i heard good things about this one and
this one , the first is very light weight and maybe dry faster than the merinos i dont know, thinking also about using in the sleeping bag if im getting cold

thank for ur time, good evening or day, peace

For a potentially really wet triplike Iceland I think a fleece is well worth taking as it will still keep you warm if it gets wet, which a down jacket will not.

  2. I’ve done fleece plus rain jacket for all of my tours and have never wanted anything else (haven’t toured Iceland though).

  3. Fleece and a wind jacket is one of my go to layering system. However there’s a bit of redundancy with the down jacket depending on how warm it is.

I never ride in my down jacket though, it is strictly for off the bike. The fleece I will ride in.

If it’s approaching 5c or colder I bring a buff as well.

Check the Mountain Hardwear Airmesh, I just got one on sale for 60% off

In cold weather, I wear a Merino wool t-shirt, under a cycling jersey, with a Gore-Tex type of windbreaker for my outer layer. I’ve worn this on many 0C days and even biking in the snow. I’ve never seen nor had a use for fleece. I contemplated getting a fleece years ago, but instead dressed in layers as mentioned above, and I’m glad I did. Considering space and long distance touring, a fleece takes up a lot more space and weight than what I use.

The worst thing you can do in the cold is sweat. If you sweat, you’ll freeze and get hypothermic. With the setup I use you can control your temperature by your exertion. If you’re cold, bike faster. If your hot, bike slower. You can also regulate your body temperature by taking these layers off and adding them back on. I also wear a pair of waterproof gloves and always carry a pair of Marino long johns for sleeping. No matter how cold and miserable you get, never ever wear your sleeping clothes (Marino long johns) biking. They are strictly for sleeping. After a cold, wet, miserable day. It’s very important to have something dry and warm to put on at night.

  5. Polartec Alpha comes in 60, 90 and 120. 90 is considered the “go to” for most activities. Many want, but can’t get due to high demand a hoodie and a pair of pants. Good luck
