My family wishes to gift me a new, safer helmet; this one is *safe* as in uncracked and not too old (2 years old), but they believe it too cheap and I haven’t been able to convince them otherwise.
It is indeed a cheap, uncomfortable helmet, with a really bad tensioner to boot, so they’re not really wrong!
Plus, it can’t be as safe as some of the higher rated ones (i’ve seen the Virginia Tech website and Berm Peak’s video), so i am here for recommendations.
The maximum budget is about 200 USD.
That’s a *loooot* of money here, so the cheaper, the better, especially considering the high import taxes of my country, but i want to hear all recommendations of all prices, far above and far below the budget.
I love the characteristics of my current helmet and am just seeking a higher quality version. I am a bicycle commuter and never do any mountain biking or more extreme cycling; at most i participate on some alleycats and may travel at some point.
Minimum requirements:
– *Has to have lighting*. Mine currently does and I ain’t giving up safety when the whole point is me being safer.
– *Has to be white*. Black is a nono for horrid tropical heat reasons, and i like monochrome so that it goes well with everything. Grey i guess could work, if it’s a whiter light one.
– *Has to have a low visor*. I really like having it and i don’t wear caps under the helmet. (Still, shoot your visorless recommendations if you have nothing else!)
– *Has to have a high rear section*. I gotta put my hair somewhere and i’ve had low cut helmets that were agonising to use (especially with my sensory issues). It has to have a high cut rear, so my hair can still be worn relatively high and away from my neck.
Nice-to-haves this helmet has, but i can do without:
– *Easily replaceable lighting* for when the battery ages
– *Discreet branding* (i hate, and i mean HATE big branding on things, but i am willing to sport the name of the brand on the helmet because that’s just inevitable. Still, the more discreet or unknown, the better, aesthetically!)
Thank you for the help!

Not sure what the characteristics are, but I won’t buy another helmet without a magnetic clasp.
I have no idea what helmet to get but you can just get a light that clips onto your helmet.
Consumer Reports rated the Trek Starvos wavecell helmet as the best one they tested. List price is around $100 USD. You can always buy a LED light and clip it on to this helmet.
