Brought my bike in for a pretty extensive overhaul, and paid quite a bit of money for new derailleurs but now i have this as a spare part.
Upon teardown and deep cleaning the parts, the deraileur revealed a pretty nasty chip in the body. (See picture).
Would you keep this as a spare / to harvest for spare parts (jockey wheels, cage, b knuckle, cable nut)
Would you ride this still? It feels like it moves just fine as I articulate it, but I’m unsure how it would handle the salt, and rain of a wet coastal climate, now that it’s guts have been exposed.

By all means harvest all of the spare parts not held in by pins and rivets!
I wouldn’t keep the whole thing as a spare, though. That thing will break at some point, and it might take some other parts, and/or you, down with it.
No. I wouldn’t.
An RD going into your spokes is something you never want to experience ever again.
Catastrophic failure. Superman OTB.

I dont see it on the diagrams so its really hard to say. That being said, i dont think its a replaceable part.
This is coming from a guy who JB welded my FD cage when it broke. But if it breaks again it just wont shift. It wont cause a crash.
If I was riding on it I would constantly be thinking about where I’m going to be when it fails…
It has to be retired, keep it as spares. No need to tka eit apart. Keep it in a plastic box in your bike cave.
Always good to have spares. You or someone might need them. I sold old parts, somone needed it, I did not, I got some money.
But this is a quite new Rd.
Did you crash? Did it fail for no apperently reason? Try warranty. Worth a try.
Now I know how it looks like inside there. Probably same thing on all of them.
Try to warranty it. Technically… It’s only got a 2 year warranty… but… maybe theyll give you a new one… obvious defect in the material.
I’ve seen that exact break in R8000 Ultegra rd’s, twice.
Also. No don’t ride it. Save the jockey cage… or just the jockey wheels (since they are a consumable parts), the other removable parts are up to you. The main body is done for.
