Ok so I was riding maybe 8km/hr down a trail. I rode over a couple small branches, and I don’t know what exactly happened then but my rear derailleur ripped off as you can see here. This sounds like I’m downplaying it I feel but I was going pretty darn slow as it’s wet and dark out. This bike is a week old. The derailleur is an Altus so I know it’s not great, but I feel like this should not have happened.
Now I’m wondering, is this entirely my fault, or is there a point in trying to get a new derailleur on warranty from the shop?

Unfortunately it happens, particularly when riding over thick branches like that. That said, the failure point being around the screw instead of the hanger (hard to tell if there even is one) seems strange. The metal seems to be pitted which could indicate corrosion or a manufacturing defect. I would bring it in and see if they can replace it for you, no harm in asking and you’re going to need a new one anyways.
