What tool are you using to remove it? It should be as simple as expanding it and sliding it off. If you don’t already have a pair, snap ring pliers are the proper tool for this.

Photo appears to be a left-hand thread, righty loosey in this case. May also need to remove the snap ring to fully remove the nut, though that’d be apparent when the nut is loose.
