Hi all, decided to upgrade my brake calipers to shimano 105. I installed the front caliper fine and I can feel an improvement in braking power. However when I installed the rear brake caliper I noticed that it was not low enough and the brake pad is rubbing against the rear tyre (see photo).
Is there anything that can be done to fix this? I’m confused how the front caliper fits but the rear doesn’t…

Some bikes are made like that with different clearance front and back. You need a longer reach brake like Shimano BR-R650 or the cheaper BR-451.
Also, your brake pad cartridges in the picture are installed upside down and backward.
There’s a little switch to bring the brakes into proper position. You need to turn it a little. It’s where the cable attaches to the brake caliper.
My guess: a 27″ frame with 28″ wheels – and as the rim diameter of 28″ is 8mm **smaller** than 27″ (don’t ask), you’re 4mm short.
And no, all you can do is getting different calipers.
It looks like the one on the photo is installed upside down. The part in the middle should be facing the ground
You can try filing the brake caliper to make the holder fit lower. If it’s just a few mm, it won’t make a structural change. I did this on my rear as well to fit one of my wheel sets.
You may find some solutions for under $5 on ali express if you search “caliper brake extenders”. They exist. You seem knowledgeable enough to be able to decipher which ones would work. Id need more pictures. Some extend the arms. Some drip the whole assembly lower off the frame mount point.

If you have a horizontal sliding rear dropout I think you may have some room for moving the wheel forward, though you’d have to be wary of the impact on chain slack and tire/bike clearance.
