Heading to Europe & Not Sure What to Pack? Here are a few things that my fellow US travelers may want to avoid packing if they are traveling to Europe.
1. Baseball Caps: Europeans in general do not wear baseball caps, especially backwards. You would be better served to wear a more traditional hat. You will see an occasional NY Yankee hat, but why not buy the fancy hat you always wanted instead?
2. Athletic Wear: Europeans tend to wear athletic wear to do sports, not to wear around town. There is a trend of more athleisurewear in Europe, but it is not to the extent that there is in US.
3. Khakis: the omnipresent US male pant choice is not something you will see too often in Europe. Go for colored pants or jeans. If you want khaki like pants wear Chinos instead of Dockers. The pants you will see are a thinner cut or “skinnier” fit than in the US.
4. Oversized US University Sweatshirts.
5. Sport Shoes or High Heals: US sport shoes and white socks are not quite as popular in Europe as they are in the US. You may be better off with Urban Street shoes like Vans instead. Also, women should be careful with high heels as with all the cobblestone it is easy to hurt your ankles.

Hallo medereizigers! Mark hier met WOLTERS WORLD. En vandaag zijn we in Rome bij het Forum Romanum. Vandaag hebben we voor jullie 5 dingen … … die Amerikaanse toeristen niet zouden moeten dragen wanneer ze naar Europa komen. Omdat ik veel mede-Amerikanen zie, al rondreizend …
… die een hele hoop mode faux-passen maken. En nee, ik ben geen ‘fashionista’… … dit gaat niet over hoe je jezelf zou moeten kleden ofzo. Dit is mijn advies over vijf dingen die je niet zou moeten dragen.
Zodat je jezelf wat beter mengt met de locals, jezelf wat meer op je gemak voelt … … en zodat je wat veiliger bent wanneer je de goeie kleding aanhebt als je op reis bent. Dit is dus geen modeadvies, dit is een video die je leert om beter te reizen.
We beginnen bij het begin … … honkbalpetjes! Deze draag je niet als je naar Europa gaat. Ik zie veel mannen deze dragen. Ja, het kan zijn dat je kaal bent, zoals ik … … of kalend; een beetje kalend. Neem een normale hoed, neem géén honkbalpetje.
Dat verraadt gewoon elke keer weer … … en zeker als je het achterstevoren draagt …. … zegt dat dat je uit de Verenigde Staten komt. Zelfs als je niet uit de VS komt, dat is wat het betekent. Als je rondkijkt, zul je zien dat bijna niemand zo’n petje draagt.
En zeker niet met een Yankeeslogo of Boston of watnogmeer. Dus zorg ervoor dat je je daar zo veel mogelijk van weerhoudt. Het tweede ding dat je niet moet dragen voor de mannelijke reizigers: khaki broeken. Europeanen dragen broeken, pantalons, strakke spijkerbroeken; dingen zoals dat, … … maar ze dragen geen khaki broeken.
Je Dockers neem je dus niet mee naar Europa. Je kunt vinden dat ze heel fijn zitten, en dat zitten ze ook. Maar dat draagt men hier niet Ik probeer er alleen voor te zorgen dat je er minder uitziet als de toerist die mensen willen bestelen. Je past zo beter tussen de lokale bevolking.
Ik lijk zelf niet erg op een lokaal persoon omdat ik een grote dikke vent ben. Maar dat betekent niet dat ik er niet tussen pas. Dus khaki broeken, sorry Dockers-mensen, laat ze thuis. Het derde ding wat je niet moet doen als je hier komt: draag geen atletische vrijetijdskleding als je naar hier komt.
Ik weet dat velen in de VS rondlopen met hun Underarmour T-Shirt en hun (Adidas)trainingsbroek aan dingen als dat, yogabroeken enzovoorts. Hier in Europa, dragen de mensen geen atletische vrijetijdskleding als zijnde normale kleding. Ze dragen die atletische kleren om naar de sportschool te gaan, om te rennen, om te wielrennen enzovoorts.
In de VS is dat normaal, maar hier doen we dat niet. Nu weet je dat ook. Het volgende punt past er wel een beetje bij: draag je grote, slobberige Amerikaanse universiteitstrui niet. Ik ben hier in mei en er zijn veel Amerikaanse toeristen en backpackers …
… van hogescholen en universiteiten en ze hebben hun Wisconsin-, Illinois- of Harvardlogo op hun trui. En dat zegt gewoon dat je een toerist bent en bestolen wilt worden. Je zult ook zien, mensen hier dragen die slobberige truien niet. En al helemaal niet met die grote afbeeldingen op de voorkant.
Dus het zou beter zijn als je jezelf daar ook niet aan waagt. Zoals gezegd, ik trek ook soms wel eens mijn WOLTERS WORLD sweater aan. Dat heb je wel. En dit alles, het ligt echt helemaal aan jezelf.
Ik probeer slechts ervoor te zorgen dat je er beter bijhoort, zodat je een leukere tijd hebt … … en meer lokale mensen ontmoet en niet wordt lastiggevallen door straatverkopers. Dingen zoals dat. En mijn vijfde tip is: draag geen sportschoenen. Mensen hier dragen wel sportschoenen, maar dit zijn meer straatschoenen dan echt spórtschoenen.
Ik zou dus geen echte sportschoenen aantrekken. Als je je normale sportschoenen aanhebt, met witte sokken, … … vertel je daarmee gewoon dat je uit de VS komt. Wat je dus het beste kunt doen is … … ik draag schoenen zoals deze; makkelijke instappers … – ook heel makkelijke voor de douane –
… echte reisschoenen. Hij past ook wel, hij is namelijk geen sportschoen, maar geeft me wel wat steun … … en ik pas er een beetje beter bij met dat. Dus dat heb je wel Hoe dan ook, dit waren mijn vijf tips van kleding die je niet moet dragen als je op reis gaat.
Ooh, als je een reizigster bent, nou we toch met de schoenen bezig zijn, … … laat je hoge hakken thuis. Met alle keistenen krijg je wat problemen. Ik heb meerde reizigsters zien vallen over de keistenen dankzij hun hoge hakken. Sommigen komen zelfs vast te zitten tussen de keistenen.
Als je chique uit eten gaat, dan kun je ze meenemen, maar je draagt ze niet als je gaat wandelen … … omdat het onpraktisch is. Zo, ik hoop dat dit geholpen heeft, nee; ik ben geen fashionista …
… maar ik ben wel een reiziger die andere reizigers wil helpen om beter te reizen, …. … dat waren vijf oprechte tips over dingen die mijn medereizigers niet zouden moeten dragen als ze reizen.

Please Note: This Video is for 35+ year old US travelers heading to Europe. Young Europeans do wear most of these styles and trends, but the 35+ European crowd do not wear them to the same extent. And the locals won't care what you wear, so this is more to help you blend in a bit better. Great travels to you all & Thank you for all the comments & subscriptions.

I never understood this type of advises. Who cares if someone's wear a baseball bet, or a bag with university badge? Why would you have a need to hide you are an American? Nobody cares really. Be what you are and enjoy the places you visit. P.S Not to mention how inaccurate some things here like 'Europeans do not wear sport shoes'
He did not mention not to walk around with an extra 150lbs of fat.
I dressed like a guy who will be walking around all day in the sun in summer. Plain cotton tee shirt, dark khaki shorts, thin wool ankle socks, hiking shoes, and mesh vent boonie hat. There’s no way an American can blend in so why not be comfortable?
I am in Rome this week, wearing my relaxed jeans and cargo pants. Dont care.
why should you be ashamed of where you come from to the point where you're trying to hide it?

I would say no one wears a vest under the polo shirt in Europe you would stick out like a sore thumb
YES!!! Also: NO HATS INside, either. For men. NO pyjama pants,no Flip Flops… NO tight clothes when you're overweight, no worn out anything. Talk with an "indoor voice". NO cackling. No loud screaming conversations from one side of the street to another. No open mouth gum chewing..No pointing with forks and knives while talking – can we write a book-let ??
It's because older middle class Americans have limited fashion choices as most places where they shop (Costco, Target, Kohl, etc) tend offer only "frumpy" clothes. Exceptions are urban-centric Americans living in the heart of NY, LA, & SF
When it comes to hoodies, it is not that people in Europe dont wear them, it is that you will be associated with Hooliganism and you may not bring the right type of attention to yourself. Basically the wrong type of crowd in Europe are associated with hoodies
I'm not sure if I agree with most of this. If you want to avoid getting pickpocketed, keep your valuables in very hard to reach trouser pockets / bag sections. Be very aware. Say no and walk with purpose when people try to engage with you and generally just walk with confidence. Dress for the weather but wear functional shoes. Everyone can tell if you're an American anyway and that on its own doesn't make you a target. Just stay in safe places and use the same rules you'd use in the USA for keeping safe.
I lived in Rome for a year, if you go to tourist sites you are a tourist, so don’t worry about shoes. Wear something comfortable!!
I live in Europe and I have seen locals who are not American wearing all of those things
We went to Ukraine a few years ago. Everyone always looked at our shoes. They also always commented on the fact that we didn't dress in parkas everywhere we went (it was winter). Most of the men wore track suits, while the women were all dressed to the nines. Sometimes people knew we weren't from there, other times they would try to have full on conversations with us in their language. One babushka, after asking me a question that I didn't understand, shook her head and walked away after I told her, in halting Russian, that I didn't understand her. In another situation, we got harassed by some homeless fellows, but I pointed to my husband, who was much taller and brawnier than all of them, and then shook my fist at them. They knew we were not from Ukraine, lol. But they also figured out quickly that we weren't going to be intimidated by them. It's always fun travelling to new places. Worry less about how you look and how people will treat you and more about just having fun. If you treat others well, hopefully they will be kind in return. If not, at least you did your part.
Watching this near the end of my trip, but things I brought to Europe: Red Sox jacket, Boston College hoodie, BC baseball cap, and Reebok sneakers. But I wasn't walking around with an American Flag so maybe they won't know 😂
Baseball caps worn backwards scream American to me. I’ve never seen any other nationality wearing them like that. I genuinely don’t understand WHY anybody would.

Why would you want to bland in; you are tourist, a welcomed guest. You are American, be proud of it! People are different, but most Europeans will respect you just for being youself!
Wear whatever you want. Maybe just avoid wear political items.
