Thanks to Scottish education my grandfather escaped the pits and ended as one of the country's first teachers of computer science, to disadvantaged kids near London, and setting the exam questions for the London board. That could not happen under the SNP. Thank god he left Lanarkshire.

My wife, a teacher in Dundee, has just returned home at 7:30 pm. She departed for school, as she does every week day at 7:15. She and her colleagues are putting in at least a 10 hour day trying to cope with the utter shambles that now passes for education in Scotland. Then add in the work done every single night and at weekends and I estimate my wife is putting in around 70 to 80 hours a week. If this useless man even spent a couple of weeks working as an underpaid classroom assistant, never mind a teacher he’d soon have a different attitude. Luckily my exhausted wife retires at the end of this academic year after a career of nigh on 40 years. Newly qualified teachers now average only 5 years before quitting; disillusioned and exhausted.
