I am looking to get into mountain biking and I have been looking for a used bike. I don’t necessarily care about all the luxuries of modern bikes as I have rode nothing that I can compare it to, to appreciate those things. I have been trying to find a cheap bike and I have found one from 2005 and was wondering if that is too old (I’ll include the listing) I’m just wondering what the cons are of this if I buy it obviously probably harder to find parts, etc. Also a friend of mine recommended to maybe start out with a single speed bike would I be able to convert this bike to that?

  1. Start out with a single speed? I don’t see any reason to do that, your pretty much just making it harder on yourself. As for the listing, that’s a 19 year old downhill bike. It will leech your energy and happiness as you try to pedal it around and it won’t even be that great on the downhill tbh. I would definitely try to get a bike within the past 3-4 years. You should be able to find a used Trek Roscoe 7 or similar hardtail that will serve you well for around that pricepoint

You wouldn’t want an older downhill bike for just pedaling around trails, unless you want to spend a lot more energy to go a lot less far.

I also wouldn’t recommend a single-speed unless your trails are very flat, or you’re very fit and looking to make riding more difficult than it needs to be.

You haven’t mentioned an area or type of riding you want to get into, but I’d recommend looking in [PinkBike’s Buy/Sell in the Trail bike category](https://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/list/?region=3&category=102&price=..1000&framesize=16,19,24,25,26,28,29). Preferably a bike newer than 2015, the geometry started changing around that time to much more beginner-friendly geometry.
