The first one seems older, the second one more modern and newer.
I know NOTHING about bikes, so I was inclined to get the second one, but someone told me that the looks can be deceiving and the older one is much better; was he right?

Well to start, both are very different sizes. You need to know what size you want before anything else. The older bike is a 58 and the new one is a 53. Basically 6’2 vs 5’4. Look up some sizing charts online for more info.
