Oceania Elite & U23 Sprint Championships | Women
Saturday, 16 March 2024
Good afternoon and welcome to delightful devonport for the Oceana Triathlon Sprint championships for 2024 it is Andrew Hopwood with Craig Redmond and it’s going to be an amazing day of triathlon now first up we have the elite women and under 23 women who will be racing in one combined race
Followed at that’s starts at 1:00 and at 3:00 we’ll be having the elite men the conditions I can report are absolutely wonderful the air temperature is sitting in the early 20s the water temperature again I get to have reliable souret around think that 1920 odd it is
Wonderful and uh rers we are very much looking forward to this big race we are Hoy what a fantastic day we had a great racing yesterday with the world power Series so now we move on to the oceanana Sprint championships here number of these athletes uh were planning to do
The the world first round of the World Series in Abu Dhabi and that was that was Council due to a weather event uh so a lot of them have um elected to come down here to give us a cracking field and uh you can see a beautiful shot of
The athletes getting ready to be Marshal and called down to the swim start yes indeed as I said the temperature is nice a couple of athletes with the the tops on just that bit of Breeze is getting ERS which is interesting so and the tide
Is on the turn and that’s sort of it’s almost it’s way out as well but uh the course looks in good condition race has been going on here this morning with a a festival of triathlon we’ve had the Olympic distance and the local championships we’ve had a Sprint
Distance we’ve had some kids go around on by way of introduction to this wonderful sport of triathlon and uh the Next Generation scene coming through and you can see from there it is absolutely wonderful area uh congratulations to the devonport city council and our thanks go
Out to the government of uh Tasmania for their assistance in getting this event up and going it is one that I know the athletes uh rers very much look forward to coming down to they do it does have a very good reputation 1985 was the very
First race so next year will be exciting 40th 40th anniversary of this iconic race uh the athletes certainly enjoy coming coming down and competing here they do get tested this course has a pretty tough Hill they’ve got to negotiate that four times in in in a
Sprint race um it it is it’s debly um tough course and as we have a look at our um our start list today remembering this is a combined race so it’s the elites and the under 23 oceanana Sprint championships um so those under 23 athletes if they are good enough can win
Both titles in this race HBY I guess uh for the ease of our friends who are watching um from numbers down to let’s have a look here 14 are are the uh if you like the elite women from 21 on uh in the under 23 division that said like
You just made point an under 23 if good enough Can Come Away With both titles so but that’s just for the ease and I know that you’ve been studying the form and uh who is it that you think might pop out who are we going to be looking at at
The sharp end look it’s always hard to call because especially early in the season when the athletes haven’t done that many races um obviously had some athletes that you know they tap it and got ready for Abu Dhabi that have missed that event so they’ve had to you know
Restructure their training and fly down to Tasmania um but look I mean number one um seed there is Ellie hoitink the the young athlete um originally from from cber in the ACT um look out for her certainly on this course Emma Jeff coat she’s won here before she’s a very
Strong swim biker she loves that North Street Hill um so look for her she has one Here solo she’s ridden away from the pack and one solo so of her forms back to where it should be heading into an Olympic year she’ll be really tough to
Beat but look Jazz hedin’s got a point to prove she’s looking to do well uh Charlotte McShan always thereabouts in the in the racing um and and the Kiwi athlete either Goodson as well should be um should be very close in that racing yeah what you just explained uh so Jeff
Coat of course was in nap here as well so I think uh Casey is about to take over down there and introduce our athletes which is absolutely fantastic and as we notice the the athletes are in in their race suits they’re not wearing wet suits so we’ve been told the water temperature was
22° wow so it certainly warmed up yesterday um so it’s a non-wet suit swim today um very unusual in the 40e hisory or 39 year history of devonport usually I would say probably only be half a dozen years in those 40 years where it’s from my experience an old veteran who
Was in the 80s we certainly put the big thick one on as well uh so no went Su swim today at the Oceana Sprint championships here in Tasia we’re also just receiving a note from the um race officials that there is a little bit of a an angle at the start
Of this um race start because of the low tide and um there’s a few rocks there so you notice a little bit of a staggered uh line or angled line is because to avoid the um the rocks at the low um King low tide exceptionally low tides and here
Are the young ladies being introduced to the fans that are watching on the sh number seven Eva goodison number 23 Olivia Cummings 24 is Chloe badup 25 Jessica U mtig 26 Hannah Hal number eight Charlotte Hall 27 Zoe Clark 28 Sarah McClure number 29 is ISA Watson number nine Lauren
Kerwick 10 Victoria Gillies number 11 Shan monks number 30 Brianna Mo 31 relle Hill 32 Alexandra field 33 Kelsey Mitchell number 34 Charlotte Brown number 12 is Anna inder bitson from Switzerland and 14 Leah inder bitson number 35 Mia Foster number 37 Grace curs and number
38 El Lane well done there is our field for the oceanana Sprint event today so the athletes down there getting their position perfect conditions here today still quite a low tide so the girls will have quite a journey probably 60 or 70 M up from the water little bit of movement there on
The shore small amount of swell so there we can see r as the uh ladies have gone down and as you quite rightly pointed out they will be on a bit of an angle and that is because of the rocks that come into play as we’re saying as a king low
Tide little bit of a slight north northeasterly wind blowing into the devonport bluff beach today which usually it’s a very protected Beach but because um you can see it’s just a slight little chop so the those athletes that are used to that surf swimming are going to love these conditions try and
Catch a little runner on the way back um they do swim a little bit past the protection of the bluff Headland that you can see there at the top of screen um so therefore um it will be a little bit rough around the back of the swimming cans for for those um those
Ladies today so for those who are new to Triathlon and the sprint series of course it is a 750 meter swim just out and around the cans and back when we move into a 20 km ride that will be four laps and as rers quite rightly pointed out there’s the Heartbreak Hill which
They have to go up four times finished with a five Coler run which is two laps of 2.5 and uh when we did look at the last race which is the worlds in napia it was fascinating I think the the top dozen or so only about a minute apart so it
Weting the men’s division and it was also very close in the women’s division as well so there’s really nothing that we think will separate these young ladies as they go about their work here today in devonport and as you can see pens look on the face always the case
Here a little bit choppy as Craig greedman had pointed out just waiting for the start as it is officially to get underway at that 1:00 mark yeah so em Jeff coach taken the far side of the start line there on the right hand side as we look at the start line
There very strong surf swimmer has a surf swimming background we expect her to to lead this swim out and um and then she won’t be waiting around she’s a very strong cyclist as well so we expect to see her uh go from the gun there are our starters and a cheeky
Little Wave there just to show that uh some of our athletes are nice and relaxed I think it’d be like a duck out there R is saying she’s nice and calm on the externally but a fair bit going on internally of analyzing the race where I need to go as they’re lining up
Now really really interesting too Hoy that a lot of there’s a lot of Juniors under 23s in this race that have been given an opportunity by their federations to to step up and race in an elite Sprint Championship so consequently for some of these girls it’s their very first Elite
Level um Championship race so a lot of nerves absolutely so I think when we went through the the starters there’s 17 I think in the under 23 and 30 OD in the open women of course both going together and under 23 of course if they happen to
Get across the line they win both so hats off to them and uh it’s around about that 30 in the starting Mark in the elite women and what has been a fantastic day here so far both weatherwise and festive wise the uh the shore looks amazing here at devonport
It’s just a a lovely city here in Tasmania for those who are watching from afar on the northwest coast around about that uh 20 to 22,000 live in a very very livable town it’s uh nice and flat here except for that one Hill that our athletes will be
Going over a lot of facilities and they’re all ready to go now just waiting and down and they’re away almost a a quick one from someone on that inside rders but uh they got the all clear and you can see now at the start it is a run
And away and a duck dive here to get through the wave which is very different from someone who’s used to doing that uh Flat Water Swimming there’s no doubt about that no you can see Emma Jeff coat there duck diving and trying to get that uh that that break away be interesting I
Reckon the technal officials might have a little look at that start there might have been a break so there could be a penalty in in in transition for a couple of those athletes but we’ll leave that to the technical officials to have a look at that start but just have a look
At the Emma jef coat you can see her rating really high and she is straight away opening up a lead and stretching that pack out you can see there just looking to the left and then the right to see who is around just getting their bearings as they go up and over that
Swell that Craig rban pointed out uh quite rightly traditionally a very sheltered area but at the moment it’s quite a little bit swirly uh in the conditions uh the tide as we had mentioned is a king low tide so the boys are out there sort of close to the shore
As they will be reasonably protected there from the breeze but you can see Craig that there is indeed quite a bit of a swell and we’ll get that from our camera position here that is uh out in the boat’s jump yeah she’s Hing um em jeffo
Is opening up a nice little lead here some of those other girls will try and jump onto her feet but she’s such a strong Surf swi and has so much experience and uh the more chop and the more wave you gets the better she loves
It um but certainly a lot of the Kiwi girls enjoy know very strong surf life saving country as well so there’s certainly some swimmers in there that have that surf life saving experience so I’m interested in that if we can while the swimmers are going out there let’s just have a quick discussion
About that surf uh surf life saving swimming or swimming in the surf as against more flat water from your experience as a triathlete and as a coach how do you then train that is it just getting out and doing it what what is it that you go about there for
Technique oh there’s certainly uh some little things that you can you can coach but certainly it’s it’s certainly putting yourself in a slightly different swimming position than than normal Flat Water Swimming you do have to lift your head a lot more to use the uh for navigation you get your cider put your
Head back down you keep going hard for whatever you 10 20 Strokes Whatever you work on then you have another cider some some swimmers sight every time they take a breath it just depends on on their technique that they find the easiest legs have got to come in there is a lot
Of up and down with your speed because you’re going up and down over the W so you’re trying to work the runners on the way back but you can see look it’s still pretty tight some of the these um girls are hanging on pretty tight you just
Don’t want to let gaps open cuz when gaps open open and you come into T1 that’s when um races can be can be not necessarily one but can certainly be lost and also I want to pick your brain and I’m sure the viewers are interested coming around the boy as well sometimes
As we saw I think yesterday that that is a technique in its own right as well um it’s not just something that you pick up is it you you’re positioning yourself to get round and then knowing where the next marker is going to be so you can get started so again positions can
Change they certainly can and and it can get pretty rough if you caught on that inside correct it’s a fantastic shot from our um you can see um Emma jeffk leading there but um she’s not having it all her own way there’s other swimmers coming up on the inside just sitting on
That hip this will be really interesting whether she gets squeezed out on that inside of the uh the Turning Boyers they turn they’ll be turning right here to go around the back of the swim Course and there it is we and you can see there that inside passing y so was quite
Interesting to see there as they come around and there was a quick and away they went and probably pick right up onto each other there this is a very interesting race in in two and look at the different directions now too yeah now it’s really important
To get your cider because have a look at Emma Jeff coach she’s breathing to her left so she’s breathing straight into the waves uh while um so if you’re you need to have that ability to breathe both sides your body yes so that you’re trying to make sure you can get the
Oxygen in uh and not getting a mouthful of water well you’re you’re abolutely right you you’re looking at where your competitors are so you have a sense of what needs to be done and what’s around you but if you’re only breathing one way and there is a bit of a surf coming in
You’re going to drink a fair bit of uh the ocean that uh is coming to you so you really have to be careful yeah and these these ladies have now got the uh the swirl um pushing against them so trying to push them back towards the beach while they’re trying to to swim
Around the back of the uh the Turning boys so that looks like is that Emma who has gone to Second their redders or I think she has potentially y just trying to pick up their race number there you can see there we’re just trying to hold firm with our boat there
So it is choppy bit lumpy in the ducky there and the rubber ducky so they’re spreading out a little bit here as one expects uh in in the swim it is 750 m and as you can see there’s a a good crowd here and uh it
Was building from uh this morning CU as we said it is a is a festival is the home of triathlon is certainly known to be devonport so again we hope you’re going to enjoy the pictures that we bring you from this absolutely beautiful Seas Seaside town of devonport on the northwest coast of
Tasmania yeah look we there you can see that some of those girls have sort of just been drifted inside the swimming boys there so they’re going to have to swim back up towards that boy they’ve been pushed in with with the waves and a little bit of wind that’s there so those
That can take a better line can potentially um make up some ground here so looking at that line there reders and again keeping your coaching hat on you would have preferred they stayed a little bit out to sea so that then they would be attacking the beach coming back
In cuz now it looks like they’re going to be swimming against it on a very tight turn with the others are going to come around and sweep back towards the shore yeah they they’ve got a really good line but soon as they get around this I they’ll be getting pushed
Straight back into the finish so they’ll fly back to shore now really start to try bringing the legs in towards the end of the swim trying to get some the blood pulling down into the legs to get ready for that run to T1 quite a quite a long
Run in the T1 here well it is isn’t it because not it’s the beach to negotiate which we haven’t accounted for is normally depending on the tide and and as we saw when the competitors were introduced to us earlier on they had a little run to get to the start line so
Yes it’s going to be interesting when they get into that transition here they go now just getting some clear water working hard back towards the shore where the the crowd is settled along the foreshore here of devonport and we’re getting some feedback from out on the course it looks
Like it could be um Zoe Clark leading the race at the moment so don’t don’t know a huge amount about young under 23 she’s another 23 athlete that was a talent transfer athlete so had a swimming background so so Zoe Clark is leading our race the Australian
Athlete she finished 12th in the elite women in at the World Cup in um wanica in back in February and uh so good race from her so Zoe Clark is leading and we expect Emma Jeff coat in uh second place and so if those two get together if those two
Get together uh potentially could ride up the road yeah so here they come yeah Zoe Clark should be thrilled with this look at her world ranking of 222 World Triathlon championships of 81 but it counts to nothing when you’re got your nose in front and really could this be
Something that she decides this will really give her the the the Philip to understand she certainly can compete against the big girls now which she is out there doing so wonderfully well oh well she’s certainly making rep to winning here cuz Emma Jeff Cody is no
Slouch in the water so to to open up a lead on her is is good going and there are the shots of again the Mery Bluff that we can see in the uh foreground there as we spin back around towards Ward the the city of devonport
And for our kiwi fans tuning in we believe it’s briat rodri who’s sitting on Emma Emma Jeff coat’s feet so the Kiwi Bria rodri is right there in third place yeah it’s somewhat remiss that uh again we welcome our friends over watching in New Zealand that we hope
That you enjoy the coverage and and wish you all the success in today’s race as our swimmers now going very very hard towards the shore we’ll get a good handle on the race leaders in just a few moments as they come into the transition for the first time make their way onto their
Bike and then uh out onto the track of course they come out of the transition area they’ll turn left back in towards the city and then they head back up and negotiate for the first time the big hill and our first athlete so Zoe Clark is standing up in the way area just
Having a look she’s caught a lovely little wave there some good body surfing skills right there and just opened up 15 20 M lead that’s fantastic body surfing and so she’s running up hard be a quick transition they don’t have to discard their wet suits well that’s a terrific point that
You add that’s is going to make it for very quick timing so for those that have really good technique as far as that’s concerned that goes out the window and there you can see from the tide uh she’s running across what looks be to be it’s
Like a a desert across there look at that it’s a big expanse of sand very picturesque I’m not sure how much the the swimmers probably would have loved it if the if the water was further into the shore but here she comes now what a great start to this race oh give a
Credit to ran really hard out of that swim and opened up a big big time Gap just watch the transition very smooth helmet on and she is away well done sorry so she’s making every post a winner she’s going to play catch me here you can and Here Comes The Charge of the
Light Brigade I can see Ellie Hoy Tink there the number one seed uh no it’s rodri is just behind her that’s Tara cinski from Queensland she’s coming out now so we should be able to see and there’s our leader just getting her shoes on goes in front of us but we
Go back to the transition area with the young ladies quickly as R has said it’s very quick transition because there’s no wet suits to discard they just pop the helmet on and away they go yeah so Emma Jeff coat is out onto the bike great Drone footage there Of so now so it’s um it was Eva goodison who was third on the bike from New Zealand my apologies that on New Zealand um supporters Eva Goodson was third onto the bike then cinski and then The Charge of the Light Brigade behind that so just a littleit of a Time Gap
There and there is the athletes as they’re all bunched up now um there won’t be a lot uh in this race because it is the sprint series and uh there is our leader as she puts the head down and away she goes great determination as you
Said R she she’s in front and uh away up the hill so and all the athletes are now out and on their bikes just in front of us and uh there’s the distance as we can see with those fantastic shots they come around the turn wiggle their way right
And follow this beautiful Coastal vistas of course they’ll be concentrating hard on staying on their bikes and I think it’s just the the last of the athletes now getting their helmets on and they head out on the bike yeah really I just having a look at the timing splits on here here
And it looked like uh Zoe Clark’s time didn’t come up so whether they missed the chip or a chip broker or something she’s not on the timing sheet but she is in first place followed by Emma Jeffco at uh down um and then Eva Goodson in third 13
Seconds down out of T2 okay from Emma je Co Jazz hedelin was 10 seconds down and then a Swiss athlete in the bitson was in fourth at 25 4 seconds down okay and there is probably the last of the athletes getting on their bike and
Uh so they come out now and get into a rhythm this is where we go they need to sort of get into that Rhythm hard down get the pedal going the the shoes aren’t on just yet just sort of slip those on and pushing really hard you can see
Now working their way into this race proper so four 4X 5 km Laps on this bike the notorious North Street Hill will certainly test their legs it’s not a long climb but it is incredibly steep climb it’s a great opportunity to break away because you can push over the top
Quick U-turn accelerate down the hill and then you go through quite a technical section there got a really fast left hand corner dead stop U-turn and then you’re going to come back out through a a left hand and a right hand over the train line and back onto the
Course proper it is quite a technical little section so you got the hill you get very little time to recover because you got a lot of energy power spikes through those corners and new turns and then you got to back into a time trial position back to transition area yeah
It’s an interesting one it is very very technical and sometimes uh people love the hill the challenge then is you might be a climber but sometimes you might be a descender it’s two very different things isn’t it uh and and then breaking knowing when how bold you are going to
Be on those Corners you’ve got to negotiate some train lines which again can provide a little bit of trickiness for you if you aren’t used to that sort of thing with uh normally it’s okay on the bike if it’s uh dry conditions it’s when you get a little bit of rain that
It becomes extremely problematic uh I can tell you that from my experience I’ve had a few run-ins with some train lines in the past so you don’t want that but here we go H Hill so Emma Jeff Cod has joined Zoe Clark on the hill for the
First time they about half half way up the hill there as the chase pack comes around is a little bit deceptive with that camera um uh image but you can see it’s it’s hard work up there it’s a two-part Hill if you like you got the
First bit of a rise a little bit of a spot there where that pack is to have a little bit of approve and then you get into the real steep bit before you got to Bridge Over the Top but Zoe Clark Emma Jeff Code are away Eva goodison the
New Zealand athlete is caught in no man’s land she’s being hunted down by what one 2 3 four five and six girls are hunting her down yeah she’ll be swooped up in a minute I think reders we got a little bit of background on Zoe she has
A surf life saving background hooby um and she was a talent transfer that was identified um by by um Australian Triathlon she uh is working out of the V program and our talent transfer currently doing University in camber and is coached by one of our really great um
Coaches in Australia um Jared Evans is doing a lot of pro um as head coach of our talent transfer program so she’s making every post a winner in her first um Oceana Sprint distance championships oh we look forward to that so you can see them going up the hill
And now they’ve turned and this is the interesting thing for me as a gentleman of 62 years this is when I start to put the brakes on but you’re talking about the elite of the elite here as they head down and you can see getting to that
Aerodynamic position and mass a sense of Wheels isn’t it are you going hard in that corner got to be really careful don’t they as they come around here just got to make sure you don’t let your wheels overlap um when you’re crossing over there Emma Jeff coat knows his
Course really well she’s won here before so she’d be quite happy to have someone around her to to um ride with and now they get up out of the saddle to get the Cadence back up to where they like it and really push hard
Now and away they go but that is a very this is the part that we were talking about they come down go a little bit wide got to have a great deal of concentration here you can’t afford to back off on that speed down the hill it’s highly it’s it’s a very fast
Descent you’ve got to hold your nerve and you got to break hard to get around that corner because you can lose gaps on Wheels as you can see here all those um the athletes are baking up and losing Wheels because some have got the skills to come down and descend and Corner
Lovely little corner there from uh Melle Hill I think it is from Queensland so she’s going around the u-turn and um back up it’s it’s hard you climb hard now you’re back out another big Power Spike and then you’ve got this lovely long flat straight which you can get
Into some work and Rhythm as you go past to where we are actually sitting in the Roy Fair brother Tower I think we should call it the man who got this race underway yep and uh there are our athletes coming around AC course next year’s the 40th but we are back to these
Elite Young young women who are performing and uh doing a very very nice job in the early stage of this race so coming to New Zealand there they’ll be very happy to get the first time up their Hill out of the way they’ve only got three more times to go um might be
Long and the leaders will be coming back along um to finish lap one of this four lap course so again uh I’m I’m going to be delving into that mind of yours as a as a coach you’d really want your athlete to be coming down here rers to
Having a good look at this course you know because of the technicality of it not just coming in blind and thinking my goodness uh have a look what uh is in front of me the athletes that tend to do well here the athletes that do the specific preparation for this this
Particular course um a lot of the Australian Juniors particularly and certainly the Kiwi Juniors as well have raced a lot here in their junior years yes um so it’s not the first time for for for many of the athletes in the senior ranks uh because theyve raced
Them as Juniors and come through so they know what to expect um and uh yeah if you do the specific work you’re away have a look here keeping ride on Jeff coat which is fantastic um there by Zoe Clark she hasn’t backed off at all reders and she’s right there as the
Motorbike just gone past up and here come the ladies look at them wheel on wheel with tremendous Pace they’re going well so we’ll try and get a Time split on that chase pack as they go through so Jeff coat just driving Zoe Clark just um sitting nicely in there looks
Comfortable doesn’t she there sitting behind so interestingly both these girls have surfly saving backgrounds just a little quick thinky U-turn as the chase pack goes through so we’ll just try and get a Time split on that to see where that is I was interested to to to see
That that was like Z Clark who was happy to sit in behind then and now she’s uh coming in second but she wasn’t prepared to sit there she was almost saying to her more experienced counterpart I’m here to race it was almost sending her a
Message wasn’t it y so 21 seconds is the gap 21 seconds from the two leaders back to a pack of the Swiss girl Leah inder bitson Emma Jackson’s in that group she’s probably the strongest runner in the field Eva goodison from New Zealand is there jazz hedelin is there and then
Another uh 11 19 seconds back to Lauren kerwick from New South Wales as well so the big packs have gone through as all the information is filtering through of course rders if you’re out there and you want to watch the race or get the a live action it’s sports sports event
Services.com do Au so that’s where you can go and see all the live times on the feed here and again going out along the coast the beach on the side yeah so they have a little bit of a Tailwind along this section of the course heading out and the and obviously the cyclist
Heading back to transition have got a little bit of a headwind from from the nor easterly that’s blowing shot of the uh devonport uh tennis tennis club there of course there’s lots of sports facilities in and around this area it’s a very sports-minded Community as there we have the uh bike
Riders coming coming around it’s the oana triathlon Sprints championships in the elite and under 23 women for 202 for if you are watching out there anywhere Australia New Zealand or indeed the world we have uh some world people coming from Switzerland so that’s fantastic in Hong Kong we hope that you
Enjoy the coverage here from beautiful devonport you see that little flick of the OBO there from from Hall from Hong Kong just trying to get the uh quenon athlete to come in and do a turn it’s that little verbal signal non-verbal signal I should say to your
Turn how much discussion would would be in those packs so we have a couple of young ladies who are out the front the peleton that might be following up they’ be saying come on you’re going to let them get out there or it’s really it’s that starts to get strategic doesn’t
Depending on how you think you’re going to run them down or not you don’t want to take an elite Runner with you there’s there’s a lot to be considered with those working groups together rers here’s a great shot so you can see right top of the screen and they’re about to
Do the left hand turn um they’ll go over the train line with that tree tree line is right now and then they’ll turn left again to come up the North Street Hill so great shots from our drone so here come our two leaders and you can see the chase pack
There just about to turn onto that little short section and go over the train line as well yep so there’s the first incline and then it sort of as we can see here sort of flatten out and then they’ve got the other one the bigger one yeah the uh drone doesn’t
Really do the steepness of the Hill any justice but it’s tough um but that chase pack looks like it’s starting to CL in a little bit of ground yeah they are working together I think now um so the girls will come over the top of this
Little bit of a pinch of a hill and they don’t only go around 100 m past the the the crest of the hill and they’ve got to do a U-turn and then they go you know hitting 70 80 km Plus on the way back
Down bit of a gap just opening up at the front it looks like I reckon by the end of this the chasing pack M has really caught up they have done a good job here I i’ be surprised if this doesn’t come together by the end of this lap and so
Then we would have a lead pack of around six girls yeah look at that eight girls so I think that’s uh Jeffco yep who’s out and Zoe Clark has now been swallowed up by the chasing pack who are now out after our leader now Emma Jeffco so there’s the
U-turn and then they go screaming back down the hill there it is and and away they go again put the accelerator on and right down that big decline this time through oh there’s been a crash oh what’s happened someone fall I’m not sure what happened there I just saw them
Go down yes well there was con not lack of concentration and just touching a wheel well let’s yeah we’ll keep an eye on the athlete and try and bring you some information as soon as we do get that so be rest assured that uh We’ve got plenty
Of Marshals out there rers um first aid people so she’ll be assisted no doubt about that as we somewhat Destro look maybe something happened to the bike but now we’re going around and uh working hard and you can see coming back over the hill this is where they put the
Afterburners on and whoosh down they go swiftly so you can just see that that group of eight now Group of Seven although one of the athletes is just tailing off the back well very much so got to have a a a lot of Bravery um a
Lot of courage to come down that hill at speed as they spin around now we’ll probably pick who they are I hate to say but I think it might be Zoe Clark yeah I can’t see her in that group no I don’t I think you’re right but
We’ll certainly keep an eye on that we do know that Emma jev coot she’s uh sitting up there so a Jeff Cen Bria um rosberg was it who’s riding very well sitting on her wheel yep as we go back to the top to have a look at the other
Athletes as they come and there it was rers in in replay just hit the the curb just fatigued not concentrating doesn’t take much mate happen so quick so Bria rodri the Kiwi athlete she’s certainly riding very well looking really strong she’s ridden onto Emma Jeff coat’s wheel um let’s see if these
Two can get away the kiwis are now for their cycling they they love to race and they love to go hard and they’ll have to make the race as hard as possible it’s they never Never Say Die attitude of racing you got plenty of heels over there not heels they got mountains to
Burn haven’t they so yeah wonderful conditions for training in the triathon in a beautiful part of the world have been very very fortunate to have a number of trips to New Zealand so if you are watching from New Zealand very warm welcome to the coverage of the Oceana Triathlon Sprint Championship coming to
You from uh devonport on the northwest coast of Tasmania because Tasmania is the smallest of the states just lying to the south of Mainland Australia the population about 570 OD th000 a beautiful lifestyle we have here redders which I think is the Envy of Plenty who come to visit us but we certainly
Welcome all our very dear friends and guests with open arms as we now have a look at those leaders as they coming along now along the straet so let’s get a check of who we’ve got in obviously we’ve got Emma Jeff Co we’ve got the Swiss athlete Leah inder bitson there
Emma Jackson’s there Eva Goodson from New Zealand and Jazz hedelin in that group so really really uh classy group of athletes there couple of um a couple of Olympians and commo games Representatives so what’s this the they’ve been up the hill twice where four times they’ve got to go they’re
Going at very very nice clip expectation that uh the time will just be probably a little bit over the hour mark I would have thought as the way they go it’s fantastic where we’re sitting in our commentary we we got the vision that you’re watching and then they hear the
Noise didn’t we of the bikes as they just went whoosh straight past us it’s fantastic to see so we can see them not only in what you’re seeing on screen but as they go past us as well from the Vantage points so um we just saw Chloe baup come
Through as well Riding Solo so trying to get across to that group yep so she’s riding pretty strong as our lead group of Leah indon from Switzerland Jazz hedgeland Emma Jeff coot Eva Goodson the kiwi and Emma Jackson so three Aussies a kiwi and a Swiss athlete in our lead
Group of five at the moment and see them turning around I think there was are you going to come and help me a nod of the head as they go over the bum that’s another little technical area too you got to be just very very aware of what
Is around you as the girls are putting their head down to come over the another bump again turn right left and away they go again just quite tight in that pack it’s an interesting stage you’re halfway through the ride you start thinking if you are a cyclist in there rders do you
Think do I try and put the accelerator down and and and use my advant AG or is it just a little bit too close what would you be thinking uh you’ve got to race your strengths and and and find your timing where you feel like you’ve
Got enough energy to to make it a decent attack and then when you make that attack you commit and you commit 100% to try and get over a great spot on these course is just on that second section of the hill where everyone’s starting to ease off a bit and suffering that’s when
You got to go here we go oh sorry just for a minute there I thought uh someone was coming around the outside but they thought better of it and just just sort of got back in and probably saved a little bit of energy just to get behind
The pack yeah so that so they’re just completing uh one of the chase packs completing lap two so they got two laps to go so halfway through the bike I have to say rers hats off to all the organizing committee everything looks amazing here in uh devonport the
Whole Community do get behind it but we can see it is organized so beautifully isn’t it it’s uh really really good so hats off to devonport for hosting a little recap at the end of so the halfway through the bike our our leaders were uh Le indon from Switzerland Jazz
Hedland uh Emma Jeff coat from Australia Eva Goodson from New Zealand and Emma Jackson from Australia was was in that League group 544 seconds back to Chloe bait up riding um just in front of Ellie Hoy Tink and Charlotte mcshain so they’re about 50 55 seconds down Y and
Then Bria rodri the Kiwi is at 104 along with Lauren kerwick from New Zealand at 104 and then another couple of athletes T Tara cinski and Charlotte Hall from Hong Kong at 154 along with Shan monks from Australia and anah Hal from New Zealand about 154 so with this swim and
This bike course it’s certainly causing big gaps so if you don’t make that front group or front two packs racing is going to be pretty tough but but also remember that this has got another 23 category built within the race and there’s also a number of Junior athletes that are
Stepping up that are only in that 18 19 or a little bit younger category that are having an opportunity to be exposed to this Elite level which is such a wonderful learning experience rers to be given that opportunity so all of a sudden they could be a big fish in a
Little Pond and now all of a sudden that they’re swimming in much bigger Waters and so for them it’s even a mental challenge where they were out being hunted by the other Juniors they’ve got to then race amongst themselves and see how it goes you know it can be quite
Daunting for some people others they just relish the challenge so I think it’s a wonderful thing excuse me that uh we have mixed it up as we can see now from our vision excuse me as they go up the hill yeah so what I can tell from
Those results at the moment is the race STS our leading under 23 athlete looks like it’s the Kiwi Bria rodri from New Zealand is um halfway through the bike so she looks like leading the under 23 category at the moment so she can hold hold that position long way to go of
Course but great race from her certainly is as there is our lead Packers they leave the vision go around the top of that Hill a little bit further on and looks like a lonely sort of figure isn’t it when you see someone going like that
R is up that hill and it does give us a much better angle on what it’s like so we’ve got the two uh views coming from down low going up and then from above of which we’ll probably have a look at in a minute to get a sense of uh where they
Are so looks like maybe a what’s that a 28 second Gap at the at the top there for the uh Swiss athlete we’ll see in just a few moments as they can go through riding very very nicely and down they come and again this is where it
Gets very very interesting and even look at that one there red is theirs can’t pick up we’ll have a look who this is who came down very very swiftly it’s an Australian I think as we see here breaking hard now that was an Australian who went to the
Front so be an issue with the timing chips because I’ve been calling the Swiss girl on the timing but I don’t think they actually in this group so our apologies for that Jeff coat and two kiwi girls so maybe there’s been a swap with the uh rodri is actually in there
So it looks like potentially there’s an issue with the timing so cinski has caught that group as well y so that’s really interesting because um I just saw the two swiss girls ride yeah I was looking there I thought we only had two in the race and they were riding
Together but it so our apologies we are trying to look at the screen of which we got the correction as we saw but on the uh leader board that we’re getting the live feed it’s actually saying that the Swiss Rider is so uh with due uh
Respects to her uh redders we might drop her from our thoughts and say that might be uh a mistake and great ride here from Chloe bait up she’s working really hard doing the solo thing and she’s being hunted down she’s got to make a decision
Here do I wait for those girls and work together or do I keep pushing on y save save my energy and work together but certainly apologies about that certainly um you know Bria rodri’s there and also Tara cinski from Queensland is in that lead group um so apologies for for that
Mistake but she is certainly in that League group not the Swiss girl yep well mate we can only go what’s given in front of us and there is McLure from New Zealand that we saw came around very hard leaning into those bends you can see the technique and how they go about
Their work on those uh bikes they’re so light the bikes now redders aren’t they I was having a good look at some of the equipment I guess it doesn’t matter when they get to the elite level they’ve all got similar equipment just tell us a little bit about what sort of money can
Be spent on some of these bikes out there oh there’s not much Chang now well over 10 grand moving into $115,000 for top of the range um Carbon Fiber bikes some of these um some of the entry level ones you can get in with about 5 to 6,000 but um with your
Electronic gears and and your disc brakes and that these days it’s uh full carbon fiber frames it’s uh it’s not a cheap exercise throw your wheels in on top of that so here’s our lead group coming through to finish lap three we’re going to go right in front of us and
There is two Australians New Zealander two more Australians and another New Zealander now we can confirm that we saw it with our own eyes live so the the Swiss athlete is definitely not in there and and now it’s moved although we still have a Swiss in our thing but let’s call
It that was jebco from hedgeland and then Jackson uh gooderson and bait up but looking at that then redders that Swiss Rider is got to be a New Zealand Rider yes definitely there’s two kiwis in that rer I pretty sure it’s Bria um Bria rodri along with Eva Goodson in that lead group
So definitely broad Rick’s there cuz I just we just saw it so have’ just seen them come through so they having a drink they got one lap to go the two kiwi and four Ries Jazz hedin’s right there Emma Jeff coach right there and Tara cinski
Who we thought was off the back and but she is definitely in that lead group okay well that is fantastic to know as the athletes went around the corner and away they go again over the Ridge and then our Chase group’s got Ellie hotin Chloe bait up relle hill and Charlotte
Shane they are our Chase group and we’ll try and get a little time split on that 1 minute and 9 seconds they are down and then have another Chase group of three coming through as you can see there on the screen with an Aussie and a kiwi and I’m just
Trying to pick up that uniform with the other one compared to the number nine I think that was you Lauren KCK yep as well from Australia number 25 but there we can see just getting out of the saddle and pushing hard before they uh have that Ascent so definitely
With uh with with Bria rodri in the in that front group she’s definitely the leading under 23 in athlete so she certainly has an opportunity here to uh to potentially win medals in both events the extraordinary performance by excuse me that young lady who’s made the journey over here to devonport as we
Said Lauren kek uh went through as well we didn’t get any uh confirmation rers on Zoe Clark but we haven’t seen her go through so we can only think that it uh sadly for her and if you are family members uh of her that uh she had that accident uh at the top
Of the hill as she came around there’s how monks for New Zealand just on they on they came through that’s Shen monks uh also Charlotte Hall from Hong Kong and in that group there there’s a four competitors who are about 2 and a half minutes in that chasing group headed up
By Emma jebot from Australia yeah so here’s here’s another one of our our Chase packs so they’ve um got the bur done a little u-turn at the little far end of the course um and now heading back past transition to going to North Street Hill for one more time sure they’ll be pretty
Relieved when they get to the top of that Hoy for the last time so mate that pack that we’re just looking at there they’re about 2 and 1/2 minutes behind our leaders at this stage there they are those young ladies there are chasing about 2 and a half minutes down from our
Leaders yeah we can just see um Hannah how from New Zealand there just on the back just having a look at a bik maybe having a couple of issues with the Mechanicals that certainly can be a frustrating thing if you’re having a really good race and then something goes
R yeah so that’s one of the Swiss athletes there’s two sisters here Anna and Leah inder bitson from Switzerland but Shon potentially could get lapped out if they’re not careful so that is the case rers that you be forced into this race if you are overtaken that you are told that maybe
That’s you’re done for the day yeah look just getting a little visual not on our screen hoppy but I can I’m getting word back that that Zoe Clark is is up and about um she’s walking to Medical now she has got a little bit of um some
Grazing on her back and and shoulder but but she’s okay she’s walking and she’s in the hands of medical but she’s okay oh that’s great news thank you for that rers it’s always comforting to know that uh the athletes that put themselves out here that don’t come to any harm and for
The family and friends of Zoe Clark uh a gutsy performance early when she was ch Ching so much but it’ be interesting maybe later on to have a little bit of a chat with her to to see what happened whether it was something mechanic on the
Bike or but it was maybe a a concentration thing in the in the big races and she was doing so very very well and uh at least thankfully too R is that when she did come off it was on the top of the hill in that flat section
Before she came down the hill so there they go again up to the hill on that’s the first bit then it flattens out as we’ve been telling you and then the last big push can anyone make a statement so here’s our Chase group um coming up the
Hill as they watch the lead group come down so there’s six so four four Aussies two kiwis a good dingdong battle be really interesting in the running here I would like I would think on running pedigree you would have to look at Emma Jackson y Jaz has very
Strong not 100% sure the running pedigree of our kiwi athletes but you know they’re always strong oh yes yeah we had a couple of close races there last year be between these two Nations that Pride themselves on their Triathlon prow s certainly um Bria rodri she finished uh uh fourth in
The um Oceana cup at one eighth I should say in wanica at the Oceana cup and had a 16 17th at the uh World Cup in napia so she’s an athlete that’s on the rise it’s interesting it’s uh Jeb coat that has continually put herself out there now I thought I saw
Cinski up there as well but I can’t see her on our no leaderboard so I’m thinking that uh maybe that is the the the Swiss well sorry for the confusion which it’s almost me talking Thinking Out aloud here so it shows that the Swiss Rider is in there but we can see
Tara cinski in that leader group so maybe that’s what we’ll go with great news for the Swiss athlete going through she’s started her final lap so she won’t get lock out she’ll be able able to complete the race um and here’s our Chase couple of athletes here so Michelle Hill from
Queensland and the other Australian athlete it was with that group so they are out trying to chase our leading group of six certainly under 23 can come competed as well so that’s certainly medal potential for the under 23 race so we’ve got a couple of under 23 is in
That lead group is that what I understand it we’ve got Bri rodri Bri rodri yes and we’re thinking that Tara cinski is in that group as well correct so two two of them under 23 in that LE lead group potentially the gold and silver about being the N under 23 but
They certainly have a potential to be on the podium for the elite race as well so all right well that’s something to watch as again our Riders are coming back along that most picturesque part of the course that has the uh bass straight for all of our viewers which uh it
Separates uh Tasmania from Mainland Australia a notoriously choppy section of water so here we go they they’re starting to get undo the straps on their on their cycling shoes coming back towards us rers pulling their feet out oh there we are there’s a shoe that’s come aboard now what happens there I
Reckon there’s been a crash or they may have lost it no 1 2 3 4 5 someone’s gone down maybe one of the Aussies goodness gracious all we saw was a a shoe that was thrown across the road I thought it see off the CP I can see
The two kiwi girls and I can see so just trying to think who’s there so Emma Jackson’s there Jaz hedin’s there all right well we’ll keep our eye on this i’ don’t say maybe Emco but we’ll get some message on that well she’s gone down the list on our live feed so Jeff
Coat maybe oh and there’s a crash there as well you’ve got to be careful coming through here they’re getting tired they’re aren’t they’re in fatigue so C is going to lead them to T1 so she’s the first to Rack a bike watch how smooth this transition is everything’s got to
Go in the bucket so anything that you brought on the bikes a helmet running shoes are going on who’s going to lead them out there’s Emma Jackson very experienced athlete and very good runner and so out there they just about to come in front of us it’s rers as well
Rod the Bria rodri she will lead out the two young the two under 23 athletes one two Kiwi versus New Zealand so Tara cinski Bria rodri will be one and two and then Emma Jackson in third jazz hedelin in fourth and just a little bit
Of a gap and Eva goodrick so she has lost a little bit of ground in two she had that little bit of a tumble in T2 oh that’s C DUS herself off Emma Jeff coat has not come through transition so it looks like she may have that last turn
Unfor had an ACD on that last corner now we just got the um thing in there but we do know that Leah inder britson is not correct that that would be Tara cinski correct that timing chip so there they go it is Tara cinski having the race of a life and Emma
Jackson showing her experience here she’s just moved to the lead as relle Hill from Queensland is now heading out onto the Run we’ll get a Time gap on those girls coming out as the chase pack come through there’s Ellie hoitink and Melle Hill heading out on the run now if these
Girls have overridden and worked too hard on that Hill there’s certainly some good runners in this group so 105 is the gap from hoink and relle Hill to the chase group as we can see our athletes getting into their Rhythm now it is the Sprint Championship so they’ve got two laps
Yeah so Chloe B up is out of T2 so she’s onto the Run course Charlotte mcshain not far behind her and then Lauren kerwick there so there’s hoitink and Hill they are basically raining in sixth and seventh place at the moment yeah so we as they go there the
Ladies are all bunching up going into that TR transition and uh they are right in front of where our commentary Tower is as they head off towards the city of devonport so there’s a great view from the air seeing our four leaders as they head down towards the Mery River at the
Eastern end of the Run course fantastic shots there and they um couple of couple of Runners are sort of broken away I want to suggest that that’s is it sininsky you think uh Emma Jackson had just moved to the front of that group um she’s certainly the most experienced Runner
There that’s a shame if uh have Jeff coat’s okay yeah well she certainly she’s left our screens if you like but when we saw a shoe come across at a a bit of pace just a little bit tricky there you got a time where you’re going to bring your
Feet out of your shoes because you You’ got to go through a chicane and you got another straight bit of road but that’s all about your course reconnaissance and all those decisions you make race about where you’re going to do those things all right so he’s coming from New
Zealand going through Olivia Cummings and another kiwi I believe no it’s Australian monks yep that’s sien monks so she’s doing a really really nice job as well and I can see Charlotte Hall from Hong Kong there and I think it’s Hannah how as well from New Zealand so
Sitting they are sitting in about the to top 10 at the moment all right so wonderful scenes here in devonport for the uh first race of the day that we are bringing you we are in the elite and under 23 women in the Oceana Triathlon Sprint champ championships and our lead
Runner is Jazzy hedgeland what a great move from her she’s certainly uh running very well so Jazz hezen from Western Australia he’s making every post a winner Emma Jackson in second and Bria rodri the kiwi in third so Jazz hedelin she was looking smooth wasn’t she you can see not to put
The point where the other girls chasing looked sort of labored in comparison she was so smooth just Gliding Over the ground Goodson moving pretty well she had that bit of a tumble um in T2 transition so hopefully she’s okay but certainly does knock you around and makes you that little bit Sore yeah it does so she’s running in fourth position at the moment it just dis disrupts your Rhythm doesn’t it rers and any simple little thing like that can be quite problematic um when you are running as we can see here this will be Ellie
Hoying so she be in fifth Melle Hill in um in sixth yep hopefully we nice rhythm there by our Runners as they come down it’s a pretty flat area along here for the running and it’s deceptively warm correct not much Breeze down there they’ll have a little bit of um on the
Face with the northeastly but as soon as they turn it’s it’s uh can be quite a dry heat down here in Tasmania a lot of the athletes at train in Queensland are used to the racing in the humidity but the dry heat down here can be a bit
Deceptive yeah we certainly know that that is the case so this is our Swiss athlete I believe that’s on the far end of the course so she’ll be able to complete the bike and then head into the Run that’s Anna uh in bitson who is we’ve got the vision of here as she’s
Going to come around and work her way back to the transition area got more competitors heading out onto the run so our lead Runners are at the far end of the course have completed 1.25 km of the 5 km run this is a couple more of our competitors coming
Through so that might uh is that yeah Grace Kellis from Australia kills from Australian Ella Lane probably following her and Isa Watson they were sort of bunched up a few minutes ago we’re just waiting for the update on our leader board so we can tell you what the
Placings is so it looks like is it Sara mccla not definitely not I apologize there been a few challenges I think with just going to say that’s very very different but anyway we’ll go to what we’ve got here in the vision to see if we can call this race for
You so there is H yeah so Charlotte Hall from Hong Kong and I believe Isa Watson as well sitting on her shoulder um and the girl of Fosters there having some back troubles Mia Foster she came out of transition and was cramping in that lower back area was really starting to
Struggle so it looks like she’s stopping here’s our leader and this looks like it is jazz hedelin is running really well as she heads in and there she is so jazz hedelin is opening up a lovely little lead here this Bria rodri is running very well in second she is isn’t she she
Looks strong she’s moving well so she’s the under 23 athlete yep and so Bria rodri is in second Jazz hedin leads they’re about to come up they about probably about 500 m to the Run turn so about 3 km to go here Rod’s got really good form oh yeah she looks totally
Different rders than what we saw a few minutes ago and you can see Jackson now looks slightly labored in her Manner and her gate and just seeing her cheeks again just sort of bouncing along jacko’s uh yeah remember Jackson moving quite well Tara cinski one of our upand
Cominging athletes so she’s under 23 so she’s sitting in fourth place there but she’s actually second in that 23 race But Here Comes com Jazz hedelin so she has uh about to don’t so 2.5 k to go she gets a little bit of a look she does of where Bria rodri is
Bria rodri can turn that corner and put a big Target on her back I love that section there was almost they moved towards the middle like two Gladiators eyeing each other off one saying I’m going to catch you and the other one saying I’m going to hold you off
Brilliant scenes here in devonport for run with a lot of confidence Emma Jackson turns the corner and she is closely being followed by Tara cinski so two two senior athletes and 223 athletes cinski turned very very nicely there redders I thought she she almost um lowered the left shoulder on the turn
And then pushed up and out into her run very very good form I thought on her part so they’re getting towards now as they win around it’s getting to the sharp and now what are we 55 odd minutes into the race so there’s third third and fourth place jackon and
Cinski he’s running strongly as we and hing’s just gone around as well so she’s sitting in I want to say in fifth place yep andelle Hill is in six as she comes up to the turnaround as well so our first six athletes are through halfway of the run there is mcshine from Australia
Looking comfortable he’s coming through good Rhythm and u u mctigue Jessica U migue has just gone around the turnaround as well so she must sitting around a top six top seven position so great run from that another under 23 athlete and Chloe B another Junior coming through as
Well under 23 I should say yeah so it’s uh well they’re all young for you and I Champion couple of elderly Gentlemen of the of the sport of the years and we’re very much enjoying what we see here some Elite young athletes going hard at it uh competing here in
Devonport for this race it is the Oceana Triathlon Sprint Championship Curry going through Charlotte mcshain going through now so they be getting close to our top 10 athletes and here comes the Kiwi as well McLure so she’s um Sarah McClure so she’s running very well we uh you can see the fatigue on
Them probably like it’s a deceiving course it’s a beautiful day but four times up that North Street Hill if you haven’t prepared for it it can really even though it’s a flat fast run it can really burn the legs for for the Run leg I mentioned it uh it’s a probably an
Unusual question I know that 100 and 200 met it’s known that you can go at full Pace similar to about that 300 then 400 kicks in okay so in a triathlon from all the varying distances and this we call the Sprint how much can you give of
Yourself at top Pace it’s such an interesting thing with the science of triathlon I mean if anyone knows it be you it’s yeah look it’s the dynamic it’s the racing Dynamics it it depends on you know how how much wattage and how much energy you’ve burned on the bike you
Know the great athletes have that ability to conserve where they need to conserve and just do enough um and having and as we look to our race leader here Jazz headson she’s just running with great form she is isn’t she she looks strong she’s got a nice good
Turnover she’s High carriage and moving really well and and and Bria rodri is actually doing just as well behind so you can clearly see their run form to to Emma Jackson who who was starting to fatigue have a look at that beautiful stride running through there she’s
Really been working on a run Jazz I know that I actually caught up with her she was in tazzy um a few um a few weeks ago for Jake berle’s wedding actually and uh I caught up with there and we’re having a chat about where her training was at
And she was really happy about where things were tracking on her training and so you can see the the proof in the pudding of how she’s going about her racing here today yeah she certainly looks very very comfortable as she can go along there it’s going to take an
Absolutely Mighty effort to catch her there’s no doubt about that but uh as we can see there some of our other competitors Watson from Australia yeah so Isa Watson is um also part of the talent transfer program being coached by by Jared Evans um she’s based in North
Brisbane and was the second Junior girl at the Oceana of Champs so she’s genuine Junior athlete under 19 athlete stepping up in the elite ranks and she’ be quite right up there in the under 23 category and that was a good vision of Brianna ma
As well who is competing in as an under 23 athlete here today so instead of coming for another turn redders as they turn back around uh toward the city they have that little shimmy down the finishing chicane which is always something that you look forward to uh as
An athlete uh and coming down to to get the victory here today but uh again still a possibility of uh Bri rodri who to me looked really stronger in the the second part yeah so we’re having look that jazz hedin’s leading if we look at that point there Leah Inon that’s
Actually Bria rodri’s number um there’s been a swap with chips on their on their SWA chips over so so it’s Jaz hedgeland leading and and Bria rodri in second um and as our as Chloe bait up coming through on that run so she’s heading to the turn
Around yeah great scenes that we can see in the runners as we see Jazz hedglin heading back to the finishing line so she’s she’s got about 1 km to go from that position there yep so she’s heading for a victory unless something UNT happens so there’ll be big race for her
So we’ve got another athlete talking of which there is something that’s happened someone has got something in the shoe Y and we can see um Bria rodri there in second place on the top right hand side of the screen and this athletes having some issues they a cramp you think redders
Thought it was something in the shoe but I think they that’s our Swiss athlete all right who was Fairway back after the bike ride it’s been a big step up come down from a European winter to prepare for this race we saw that yesterday
Didn’t we in the uh the par race uh some people came from one Japanese competitor came from Canada just doing the winter sports so let’s hope that she okay as she tries to climatize to what is a very very warm day here in devonport yeah we just saw Sarah MCL from New Zealand
Going through so these are some of our um lead Runners that looks like Emma Jackson they’re in I want to say in third position yep that’s what we seem to have here let’s hope that’s correct and goodison following uh in fourth hoting after that if we’re correct
So I it’s probably about 6 700 met to run now for jazz hedelin to the Finish yes going very very strongly heading back towards the finishing dis and there is I think from New Zealand she looked really good so here’s our our drone pit we can just see there to the left of
Screen we can see our lead Runner yep coming over and just make that little right hand turn down to the finishing chicane now there she is so Jazz Hasen she’s got the SM so yeah look she’s got that she loves coming down to Tasmania she’s won here before as a
Junior number 23 and I she’s going to take out her first Elite Oceana Sprint championships well she’s taking the glasses off ready for the photo rders as well which is fantastic and here comes jez Heen hats off to you in a very very nice race as she comes down to take the
Tape here in the uh devonport Oceana Triathlon Sprint championships for 2024 Jazz hedin from Australia crosses the line and she’s absolutely thrilled with that race as we can see there holds the hands up high to uh accept the hugs here why not indeed well-known photographer around the sports well was
That was her father giving giving her the first hug and here comes Bria rodri in second what a fantastic race from this under 23 athlete she takes the silver in the elite and gold in the under 23 here in devonport fantastic race from her and I think it was cinski who we saw
A few minutes ago who uh as well will be crossing over yes SOI she takes the bronze overall and silver in the under 23s so fantastic race from uh from the queenslander and oh there must be something say Ellie hotin is now coming through and there is
Hotin Ki goes over as well oh and Emma Jackson is coming in so she’s obviously had some trouble in that last kilometer yeah she was running right up at the pointy end and yeah maybe a couple of challenges as uh she comes across the line
Now too happy so big run from Hoy tin she was she wasn’t in that lead group and she managed to just managed to run through some of them and and and pick a few off to to move up the field to get that position but our our top three um
Great racing well go and have a chat yep well say goodbye to you reders as I know that uh you’ll go and Corral some of these athletes to to find out what went right what didn’t quite work for today we’ll be fascinated in that as we’re seeing more athletes sprinting down
Towards the line I think it was Eva goodison from New Zealand and there she go goes and she has crossed the line a great race from her and there is rodri just telling her all about the race the compatriots from New Zealand again a very warm welcome to our friends uh in New
Zealand you and McIntyre as well has uh crossed the line nice performance uh by her she collects a well- earned drink fantastic worker that we pan back and uh see the finishing chicane working their way down towards that Finishing Line as we said before the water temperature was over 20° I
Think it was 21° thus they didn’t have the wet suits on the air temperature I would suspect is in the early 20s as well I think that might have been mcshain from Australia that has crossed the line good finish by her more athletes coming over we can see the timer
10525 for baup who was right up there early on and just dropped away slightly as we can see she’s given it her all just wonderful stuff and so now I think we are able to go and cross to Craig Redmond for some interviews with our Victors as hedelin you’ve just won the
Oceana Sprint championships here in devonport I know you won here before as an under 23 athlete but what did today’s win mean to you um today means a lot um I honestly can’t remember the last time I grabbed the finishing buner so that felt really really good today so take us
Through the race you obviously had a solid swim you got into that front group you hunted down Emma Jeff coat and Zoe Clark and then what happened from there yeah so um it was quite choppy out there in the swim um I didn’t really know where I was until we rounded the second
Swim can coming in and I could see there was a little bit of a gap between me and the front group and then em and zo were off the front so I was trying to use the waves coming back in and luckily there was one that came and I was just able to
Jump onto the back of that group so they knew the first part of the bike we’d have to push hard and everybody worked really well and I was actually struggling a little bit on the bike to be honest um I couldn’t roll as many turns as the other girls I wasn’t really
Sure why but I was just trying to sort of get my heart rate down breathing in control got to the end of the bike there was one crash at the top of the hill poor M crashed on the last Corner then AA tripped as well in transition so
There was a lot going on and then I just got out into the run and I just wanted to hold my own pay so I just got into an uncomfortable comfortable and just held it to the Finish you look really comfortable on that run I know you’re getting used to the being uncomfortable
But you look strong so what sort of things were you thinking as through that run league um yeah I’ve been working really hard um I have a small team at the moment and the last year has been really difficult um if it wasn’t for Kai and my
Parents and my sister I wouldn’t be standing here today they’ve supported me through it all I’ve gone out on my own and done my own thing and I’m so proud to be standing here today Jaz Hedon you should be proud you’re the Oceana Sprint Champion for 2024 well done and good
Luck for the rest of the season thanks rers GS that was such good scenes you can see what it meant to that wonderful young lady what an ambassador we have for this sport for this country so Jazz headin well done to you and you can see
That she did such a very very good job and of course in the second spot which I’m sure reders will potentially have a a chat to in a minute was Bria rodri who also uh was the first place getter come from uh in the under 23s as well she had a magnificent performance
As there was the replay and you saw what it and just raising her arms a loft absolutely brilliant scenes thrilled with the uh Victory and I I loved the the comment uncomfortable being comfortable and it’s about uh coaching yourself to to get in that mindset because everyone is fatigued
Everyone is hurting uh when you are in this format Triathlon is not an easy sport let me tell you from an old veteran of the C who’s done a few races and when you look over you think oh I’m hurting you got to understand everyone is and it’s like that young lady said
It’s h getting comfortable or uncomfortable and then being comfortable in that situation so there there are the scenes and i’ believe reders has got another interview we’ll go over to you reders Bria rodri second today in the elite race but also gold in the under 23 at the oia Sprint championships how you
Feel about today’s race oh I’m absolutely stoked there was so much more than I could have imagined from to I just really wanted to put together a well executed race and I pulled it off and so I’m really proud of it yeah yeah it was a little bit confusing for us
Because the timing chip issue we weren’t sure who was who in the in the group so we were calling the wrong people and then we realized you were in that League group and you got off the bike and and ran really well so take us through what your thought process through the bike
And the Run yeah well on the bike I was just trying really hard to keep the girls moving once I caught the front pack cuz I knew there were some strong Riders and Runners from behind so we just had to keep the distance on them and the girls worked really well
Together and then yeah coming into transition there was a nasty crash unfortunately so that kind of put everyone on edge but I just tried to stay relaxed and then I just told myself be as relaxed as I can for the first lap and then I can try and hit it a bit
Harder if I can so yeah I just was trying to stay calm today and it paid off you look really strong on the run you look like you were holding your form really well so you’ve been doing a lot of work in that area um yeah I guess so
Over the summer like consistently working on all three parts but yeah I finally got to see some progression with my run which was really nice well congratulations today um well done on your gold in the under 23 silver in the elite what what now for the rest of the
Year um well coming up next is the Oceania standard distance Champs in Tapo in three weeks I think so that’ll be super cool to race in front of the home crowd and family and friends um yeah and then I’ll head on to Europe around the middle of the year and hopefully race
Some more Conte cups World Cups and World Series races just a mixture of everything anything to say to the family and friends back in Christ Church yeah yeah I’m a big thank you to my support team I’m super Stu with the result and I owe you all everything well done
Congratulations today and a great result we can see there it’s certainly wonderful scenes and there we go again when we see this young lady crossing the line in second position in the open but of course a gold medal victory in the under 23s and I’m sure all your family
Friends and support staff in New Zealand we say hello to them uh Bri rodri she was super stoked and I’m sure you are super stoked over in New Zealand watching the race I was really fascinated in her running style she looked to be laboring I thought in the
Uh the first 2.5 km and then she just got a rhythm going and uh looked very very comfortable she she threw the old boy there and she did a great job and uh I was most impressed by the way she went about her work out there so we’ve had a
Fantastic race we did have a couple of little incidents but we can report all our athletes um are well now that we attended to we have all the first eight first aid crew are out here so um we can report there is no major injuries to report from those little incidents or
Accidents so that’s great news uh and redders I believe has got another interview for us so we’ll cross the reders now tusinski great race today you finished third in the elite race took the bronze medal but also silver in under 23s tell us about your race yeah
Thank you so much I’m yeah super excited not only with my result but to finally put together a nice Race Across all three disciplines so very excited and we’ll be taking these happy feelings and confidence into the remainder of the Season look you were a little bit off in
The swim but you you rode yourself up into that front pack and and settled into the race what were your thoughts as you were going through that bike leag and heading into the Run yeah the bike was really hard the Kiwi girls were really pushing the pace so yeah thanks
For them for doing a lot of work at the front um it was pretty yeah lots of surges in there so just tried to stay calm and look after the legs as much as I could for the Run took me a while to get going on the run but once I found my
Groove yeah I felt pretty comfortable and how did it feel when you saw someone a legend like Emma Jackson running in front of you and and then starting to pick an athlete of that caliber off as you were coming back at back end of the run I was definitely a little bit
Surreal I’ve always looked up to all these older girls forever so to be even racing alongside them is a huge privilege and to yeah be working out with them out there is just yeah incredible don’t take it for granted anything to say for family back home or
Coaches and training Squad oh we have a terrific support network back home on the Gold Coast Den Atkins is our head coach and the rest of the qas support team so thank you so much to them for helping us get on the start line nice and healthy and yeah our results were a
Testament to all the hard work they put into us well congratulations today bronze medal in the elite and silver in the under 23 race well done thank you so much thank you well thank thank you rers and it was good I tell you what there is
One thing I can tell you for now those three young ladies are wonderful ambassadors not only representing their family and their coaches but their country gwz they were absolutely amazing so humble so thoughtful in the words that they put together and uh was great that they acknowledged all the people
That were able to get them there so Rd it was a it was a terrific race was aing race um PR to see win from Jazz she’s she’s been uh yeah she’s gone through a couple of hard hard times um um so I’ve heard to finally deliver a
Performance she hasn’t hasn’t done for a while and deliver on her potential certainly will give her a lot of confidence as she moves um towards the rest of the season it was it was a strong fi here today and um and you know there was some keeping ahead when there
Was a lot of Thrills and Spills and a few accidents and still being able to you know manufacture a race and then and then keep your head in the game and and deliver a performance it was very impressive well it was very very impressive so congratulations again to
Our winner uh Jazz hedgeland from Australia Bri rodri from New Zealand came in second position but first in the under 23 and Tara cinski third place but second in the under 23s so I believe that now that’s probably going to be the end for us here rers for the elite women
We are going to be taking a little break now and uh we’ll be back at 3:00 um Eastern Standard Time for the elite men in the oceanana triathlon Sprint champ championships so now’s the opportunity if a bit of late lunch a cup of tea stretch the legs maybe go out for a
Quick run and a bike ride and come back to your armchairs because Craig Redmond and my very good self Andrew Hopwood will look forward to bringing that race at 3:00 so we bid you a a good afternoon but look forward to your company at 3:00 Walk
