Hi everyone it’s Nick welcome welcome back to my channel okay in this video today we are talking about 2024 hot interior design trends that I don’t think will last these are trends that are super popular right now that I think are not good I think they’re already dead but you know they’re definitely
Going to look dated in a few years now usual disclaimer you might love these things in which case keep them in your home that’s fine I don’t care maybe you love ugly things in which case that’s good for you but I think that these are
Not good and are not going to be good especially in the future so they might be hot now they might be super trendy on social media but they’re going to look really dated in a few years okay first up on my list is going to be screens in
Fridges I thought this was something that was going to be around a few years ago and then was just going to die a swift death like sometimes you see these Trends and appliances especially in the kitchen and they kind of cycle through no they’re still around these like
Samsung and LG are I’m looking at you they keep pumping out these things and I’m like do we need this first of all I’ll get to how ugly they let’s start with how ugly they are okay like screens in a fridge like fridges are not attractive and they should ideally melt
Into the background a little bit more into your space now I would love a panel fridge panel fridges are amazing they’re beautiful full that would probably always be my go-to just it sort of fits my style and I think it just seamlessly fits into the rest of your kitchen but
They are expensive they’re going to be more expensive for sure but go with something like a plain stainless fridge as opposed to something like this drawing attention to a fridge with a giant screen in my opinion is not very attractive I’m also going to question sort of this intersection of technology
And interior design cuz I think that technology tends to move a lot quicker you know people are swapping out their Electronics every 2 or 3 years there’s software updates there’s all sorts of stuff going on in design I personally prefer designs that I think are going to
Be around for a lot longer things that don’t just have a use case of 2 to 3 years especially an appliance like could we just rant for a second about how appliances just I mean I hate to be old and say they’re just not built like they
Used to but like my microwave is like four years old and it’s already tick tick ticking what’s up with that Panasonic Meanwhile my Grandma had a microwave from like 1962 that she ended up passing down to like her children and grandchildren like why are these things not lasting well I
Know why because of money but anyway let’s talk about the fridges though so there’s the fact that these appliances don’t last as long fine fine but then there’s the fact that technology like a stupid screen is going to date your Appliance no good I think these things
Seem like a really good idea in theory but in reality they don’t make sense I personally think that if you see the need to have something like this family Hub situation get something that is a standalone unit like you know Google sells one or you know whatever I’m sure
Samsung does sell something similar or whatever that has a screen or you know it’s got a home technology situation and you can sort of have that but it’s a separate unit so if you need to get rid of it in a few years you’re not replacing a giant fridge I just think
These things are so ridiculous I also question whether people are going to use them like this ad from Samsung is so clearly like targeting towards 40-year-old moms and not actual the the the let’s just say this is this is classic sell the fantasy like sell the dream not necessarily the product
Because here’s this mom standing here with her son who I mean I’m not good with kids ages like this kid could be seven he could be 14 like I don’t I don’t know but he’s written I love you Mom on his whiteboard screen there is a 0% chance I’m sorry
That your 74-year-old is going to be writing I love you Mom on that screen he’s 100% going to be drawing genitals on that thing so if you’re prepared to have that on your fridge then go for it other than that this is a skip these are
Going to look incredibly dated in a few years because technology inevitably does but especially ones that don’t serve any functional actual purpose or use which is what I’m going to follow these under okay next up on my list is going to be the color chartreuse so usually like color trends are really interesting
About like what’s hot and it’s not and like unlike technology that we just talked about there’s no really often really good Rhyme or Reason for why particular colors are in fashion versus not like they’re not pre-ordained that 2024 is the year of chartreuse or anything like that it’s sort of these
Things tend to start in women’s fashion and then they sort of move into men’s fashion and then they move into home decor so you know thing colors that were popular in fashion ages ago sort of start to move themselves sort of into home decor 6 months to a year sort of
Afterwards and this color you know is quite popular in Home Interiors so I have been told listen there’s a lot of really great colors out there and then there’s chartreuse chartreuse is just not great because it is in my opinion the cousin of my most hated color and if
You are have been on this channel for a while you know what that is say it with me it is baby poop green baby poop green is the worst color in my opinion in interior design or just SL period it’s just a really gross color I hate it I
Hate when it comes back I’ll take an olive an olive can be fine but not baby poop green this it’s just too Brown too green it’s baby poop green it’s not good chartreuse is like its funky cousin who went to like study abroad in France for
A semester you know like it’s it’s baby poop green but insufferable that’s what chartreuse is and it’s not a good color but you’re seeing it in Bedding you’re seeing it in like Furniture pieces like a whole side chair in chartreuse again you can do what you want ultimately if
You were a chartreuse girly then you just have fun with it but I think this is going to look dated because it’s just an ugly color and that’s um because it’s always because it’s dated now it’s dated now because it’s not good and that’s uh that’s my opinion oh I should mention
This video is all my opinion so none of this is facts okay this isn’t you you didn’t stumble on a channel that’s giving you like actual um education this is just my opinion so take it for what it’s worth okay and then next on my list
Is going to be geometric accent walls o I feel bad because people really invest a lot of time and money and patience and hard work and things diying this let’s talk about it okay accent walls in general were super popular in the ’90s and the 2000s often with a chartreuse
Wall which is just my absolute nightmare but now we’re seeing people sort of adding mill work and they’re diying like MDF boards and stuff on there and they’re doing some sort of little ha hazards sort of little patterns in there and I get it it’s sort of capitalizing a
Little bit on this overall trend towards moldings which I am a fan of but panel moldings and Crown moldings and chair rails and and and funky cool baseboards and whatever and interesting profiles and all the r all that stuff is rooted in sort of classic traditional design
These are super notot these are more rooted in like httv DIY style from the 9s this is like almost like a trading I didn’t even know if Trading Spaces did these but if this was popular and well known at the time they 100% would have so this is kind of that combination of
Let’s throw mill work on the wall and let’s kind of make our own panels to make it sort of really interesting and cool it’s kind of fulfilling that while also these geometric patterns so it kind of feels a little like tapping into some of that mid-century modern love of
Geometrics maybe a little bit and just those pops of color that people are loving right now and it’s all these Trends are morphing into the geometric accent wall and look I also get it that people I think are just really scared of a blank white wall they don’t maybe can
Afford large scale art they don’t how to Source it they like don’t know what to do with it and they’re just like scared of the big white wall so they’re like got it we’re going to bust out some MDF and we’re going to start painting this and make it work it’s often times
Combined with the colored accent wall and now you’ve got a colored geometric accent wall okay let’s just get to why I don’t like them okay it’s not integrated into the rest of the space it’s just sort of picking one wall halfhazard and just sort of applying some moldings on
It and calling it a day which is not integrated with the rest of the space it doesn’t really feel connected and it also most importantly isn’t following any sort of ort of architectural details in the room so usually not usually always it’s good to keep in mind what is
The architecture of the room that you’re dealing with and looking at how you can kind of if you’re going to change color or if you’re going to sort of add some moldings or you’re going to add like a vertical slat wall or you’re going to
Add any sort of detailing on the wall it should follow some sort of natural break that is inspired by the architecture of the room right so if there’s a crown molding there that separates the ceiling from the wall then that sort of gives you a reason to be able to sort of maybe
Change color or change sort of the detailing otherwise it just sort of feels like you kind of tried and then you just sort of like fell off and sometimes that’s what’s happening with these geometric walls they’re just one wall in the room there’s not any clear separation it’s just drywall next to
Drywall and because of that it always looks a little bit tacked on and it never looks integrated into the rest of the space I always think it’s a good idea to take cues from the architecture that you have and then make a decision so if you maybe have like an archway
Into a new room that’s a natural break for you to maybe put in a bunch of wall wallpaper or to change color or to maybe do some interesting detailing on the wall but just sort of picking a wall and throwing stuff on it just isn’t it and I
Think these are going to look incredibly dated because they’re not grounded in any sort of like purpose and that’s why they don’t work I’m sorry they probably took you a lot of time you busted out that little saw in your garage and I just feel bad cuz I just crapped on it
And getting rid of them is probably even more challenging so good luck with that but I’m sorry okay next up my liist is going to be mixing patterns you knew I had to get into the cacophony that is maximalism you just knew that I had to talk about it because this is 2024
Trends that are not going to look good mixing patterns okay mixing patterns it is tricky pattern is repetition and pattern is just you know repeating the same shape or repeating the same design over and over and over again into a pattern and it’s very interesting and beautiful and patterns can be wonderful
I’m not a big pattern guy myself but a lot of people love them and I think it works really great I love a strip striped armchair even a floral not my taste but it might be yours you know some sort of cool flower pattern or something could be really neat and
Something when you start combining all of them in the room it’s very chaotic and it does not give the eye a space to rest it’s just a cacophony of stuff going on all over the place and I’m nauseous okay and that’s why this isn’t going to work it takes a skilled hand to
Combine patterns together because they’re not that easy what I would say though is if you’re going to do it if try mixing simple basic patterns with more kind of interesting big Bolder patterns so if you’re going to do something like a floral plint that’s like really really big and like you know
It’s got like a large scale in the pattern so maybe you’re combining with something like a polka dot that has like a really small scale so by mixing the scale like that it’s not going to read as busy trying to compete with other busy you’ve got something that’s a
Little bit big and bold and you’ve got something that’s a little bit quieter even though you’re mixing two different patterns together so if you’re doing something like some sort of art nvo interesting sort of beautiful wallpaper pattern on the walls maybe mixing it with a little bit more of a tone down
Pinstripe or something in a nice subtle pillow so that to me is a much better way of mixing patterns as opposed to what a lot of people are really doing which is just saying I love pattern and I’m big and bold and have a great personality and so what I’m going to do
Is pick every pattern that I possibly can no matter how loud and just really have fun with it because that makes me super interesting and I think for me it just makes your space look chaotic and that is why I think that you should be very careful mixing patterns not for the
Faint of heart and if you do again finding those ways of mixing big and bold with a little bit more smaller and subtle scale and I think it’s going to make a lot more sense for you or don’t mix them at all just choose one pattern
And uh you know use that on a stripe or something like that on a beautiful lounge or lounger or a beautiful side chair or something like that or curtains with an interesting pattern on do you know what I mean like pick one and then calm down okay next on my list is going
To be colored lights colored lights are still the trend that will not die I feel like I think it took us a while but we killed the live laugh love sign we’re killing open shell sheling and now I think the next Beast we need to tame is
The LED colored lights and this is just because we’re seeing this postmodernist stuff that’s all over the place and it’s just everywhere the colored lights okay it’s fine to get LED colored lights LED strips and things like that if you want I do think that they should be recessed
So ideally you don’t see them cuz they’re not attractive but I would still say go for it in my opinion though always set them to White okay like there is one exception and that is a Halloween party where fine if you’ve got all the lights off and you got some candles and
It’s all like spooky and you want to put some orange lights on fine you’re allowed to pick orange for 2 hours at a party once a year that’s it you get 2 hours a year that’s it that’s the only color you get for the rest of the year
You get white if you’re like but what about Christmas white okay but what about New Year white okay no what if I’m um a fortnite twitch streamer white just choose white okay like even if you’re that like just choose white so first I was like going to say like is that a
Real job but then I was like well can’t really say that like this is my job so who am I to judge I mean I make fun of stuff here in my chair in my living room and apparently this is work so good for you for the record if you’re a for night
Streamer but maybe just consider white is what I’m saying white is always the answer and here’s the reason why it’s just better is the short answer but honestly the big thing is it’s going to be that matching the sort of lighting and the lighting temperature and the
Color around the rest of your space I think is always a really good idea and chances are unless you’re going to choose all of the same color you’re obviously going to be mixing all the different colors in your lights and that always looks chaotic and weird and never
Actually really looks good white is the most consistent it’s the most natural looking and that is why it will always make sense and that is why it is timeless now if you were to choose a color like red or purple or green and you’d be immediately clashing all your
Different lights in the rest of your space because you’ve got all these different lights going on which is always going to look freaky decky and then you’ve got okay well why don’t I just choose the same color and use it all over the place and it’s like okay
Fine but now you’re the weirdo with a purple room so you know maybe if it’s a background to a YouTube set maybe again if you’re that twitch streamer like I might let it go begrudgingly but honestly the answer is always white again except for 2 hours at Halloween
Party and that’s all you’re allowed from me sorry I don’t make the rule well actually I do make the rules and that’s why I made that one so just always choose white it’s always just classic and Timeless okay that’s the answer okay these big bold crazy kooky lights are
Just going to look super weird in 3 years as weird as my ’90s blacklight did 3 years after that Trend died okay because it was fun when we all went to Hot Topic in 1997 but then guess what we all got over ourselves and guess they’re
Not as popular anymore so this will look dated trust me so that’s it for me today guys I hope you really enjoyed this video I’m going to link to another video I did where I talked about interior trends that I do not think will last I
Think you might enjoy that one so also comment let me know what are your trends that you think are going to last what are the hot ones that you think are not going to if you saw a bunch of things by the way on this list that you were like
But you forgot chances are I may have talked about it in one of these other videos so go check those ones out I’ll see you on the next video thanks bye

If anyone knows Hildi, ask her if sheβll watch old episodes of Trading Spaces with me and weβll make a video together. π
My absolute favorite color is chartreuse and I've used it for yearsπ. I find you hilarious Nick and I'm happy I found your YouTube channel!
βYour 7/14 year oldβ ended me π
3:24 1950βs color scheme returns, or 1960s, either way to vintage. I like vintage but not so much the coloring.
8:22 amy sedaris has a place like that, busy busy busy.
Who tf needs a screen on a fridge???
You always make me laugh. I appreciate your straightforward manner. And, of course, your excellent taste in decor. Keep these sessions coming.
βMaybe you love ugly thingsβ π and definitely guys are going to draw genitals wherever they can regardless of age π
This was so chaotic and sassy and I love it
5:07
I feel like if you really wanted something like this then it would be better to make it into the centerpiece by making it one big shelf or shadowbox. like the seat at the beginning of the section, you could make that into a bits and bobs sorta shelf with odd angles and knickknacks. like a place to put that big rock or those weird shaped books you have in a box somewhere. maybe some faux plants and a piggybank idk. but god those have to be hell to clean. so much dust so little use.
Not the 7/14 year old LMAO π
Lol Nicks design nightmare would be my office dream room. I love, and i mean LOVE, the colored lights. The more the merrier. Blinky ones, reacting to sound ones. You name it, I would have it. But, in my defense, Nick, I'm legally blind and lights are one of the things im drawn to. I would love to have 1 space where i can go crazy with lights like it's a walk through Christmas light show but all year. Now i do agree about having them on white sometimes, but then let the color go all collors. BTW. A purple roo sounds cool to so im the weird one.
Is that not a geometric wall right behind you? (Being the frame)
If people are set on doing a bold color, do small, changeable items like throw blankets and pillows.
If there are children and teens in a house, colored lights will always be a yesπ
Planned obsolescence should be illegal
I will keep my LED lights and Iβll be the weirdo with a purple room. Nor do I care if my room looks βdated.β Iβll rock a black light and a lava lamp too. My spooky, kooky, emo girl, goth witch house will be happy with fun colors and personality.
I love your videos, Nick. Besides educating the rest of us on interior design, you're hysterical.
Wait a momentβ¦ Are you saying your Halloween parties (or any other parties) only last two hours? Iβm a tiny bit saddened to hear that.
When inviting friends over to celebrate, Iβd expect/plan to host for at least 3-4 hours, especially considering some friends have to drive an hour (or more) to reach us. Maybe Canadian cities arenβt spread out quite as far as they are in the U.S.?
(By the way, everything else in this video was absolutely spot-on. I only experienced this minor cringe at the mention of limiting entertaining to two hours. For example, if you plan to feed people a meal, there goes the entire time slot. (Iβd assume/hope the βspookyβ light wouldnβt exist in the dining areaβ¦ but why turn it off in the other room in the meantime?)
For a sec when you said "screens in fridges", I thought you meant little fancy dividers in the fridge to separate the foods, ha!
God he would hate my Tokyo home!!! I canβt stand white or beige it reminds me of being of a bloody hotel. I love colour it boosts your mood and makes you happy when you feel grey. I have complex mental health problems and colour brightens my mood when I am totally low. A lot of people love my home and often stay for hours as they feel so at home when they are there, so yeah he would hate it.
π― adding technology to appliances is solving a problem that doesn't usually exist. It's cool but it increases the chances your appliance is going to break down faster and how often are you going to use those features anyway? A friend told me about their friends that bought a brand new house with a wifi refrigerator but they didn't have Internet yet and couldn't use it for almost a week. So dumb, lol. I have a 20 year old washer and dryer set that are super basic and they clean and dry my clothes better than the front load HE washers. My mom has gone through at least 5 different washers and dryers with all the cool technology and bells and whistles in the years I've had my basic set.
i know colored lights will look dated/already kinda do, but because you can change them to plain white whether thatβs cool or warm creates a more flexible piece that you can actually use for much longer than say a chartreuse side chair! i like mixing in some calming LED colors with my regular old warm whites, it just does something for my brain!
I love your speaking speed. I speak quickly, too. Our brains work at that speed and it hold oneβs attention. Thank you, Nick.
As a general rule, donβt buy kitchen appliances from companies better known for making TVs, they are more likely to have issues and are more expensive to fix.
LG fridges only last 2-3 years π If that!
Omg! βHeβs totally drawing genitalsβ. β you busted out your little saw in the garageβ. βPick one and then calm downβ. βYou get two hours a yearβ I love you!!!!
Iβm not going to lieβ¦.i loved ALL the chartreuse pictures you showed! I now want it in my house π
