Join me on a weekend travel to the Isle of Wight. In 1914 it had one of the best train infrastructure covering the whole island. Today only 8 miles of it remain on the right side of the island. The other part is now used for cycling paths and the train platforms consist of public houses.
In this video, I travel on the right side of the island to the very last station that was opened in 1864 and is still around today to the town of Shanklin. I start in London and end up in Shanklin with a little ferry in the middle 🙂
Enjoy!
Good morning once again from London Victoria we’re here for yet another train adventure but this time we’re heading to an island that once consisted of 55 mil wellway track but today only 8 mil remains of it that’s it we’re heading to the aisle of white the at
East and G airport are currently out of service so our journey starts here at London Victoria then we’re heading to Portsmouth Harbor and from Portsmouth Harbor we’re getting a ferry which apparently lasts only 10 20 minutes which is included in the train ticket I’m looking forward to that cuz I love
My Ferry rides and then from there we’re heading to Shanklin which is the very last station on the aisle of white this is going to be epic I’m looking forward to it join me let’s do it so it’s time to start the first part of the journey and we’re taking the
Southern trains to Portsmouth Harbor and we need to get on at the first four carriages because apparently this huge train here breaks up at ham the first four carriages go to uh Port of Haro where we’re heading but the four rear apparently goes to bney reges right I’ll see you on the other
Side so after 2our Journey it’s time to take the uh White link very which is included in the ticket it’s actually on my ticket and I’ll show you in a bit this is the fair we’re going on that yeah nice don’t think there’ be a b in here though for 20
Minutes let’s see what’s on there finally inside oh nice got some TV screens this is quite nice let’s have a look at the back I want to go outside so uh let’s see if we can once more what it looks like inside it’s quite comfy right we’re heading to the sun
Deck obviously there’s no sun today but let’s see what it’s like up here a it’s raining only for the brave up here ladies and gentlem welome service so we’re can see another white link fairy just passing us the aisle of white fairies white link nice looks slightly bigger than the one
We’re on head back towards Portsmouth in that direction And over here we can see the aisle of white which I presume is definitely that that’s what I put my money on this is nice and the weather’s now turned out a lot better at least it’s not raining just notic this something else you can actually also get a Hovercraft from hou
To the other this is clus on this side here back flag so I’ve just disembarked from the ferry which is over here trying to get a glimpse of the back of it and then we uh disembarked through this little tunnel here and we come to this nice welcoming sign from the aisle
Of white welcome to ride peer head right time to go and check out Shanklin so the train station is only like 100 met away welcome to ride P head train station but on the downside the next train to uh Shanklin is at 11:45 so there’s no point waiting for
That might as well uh walk across the bridge dump my stuff off at a hotel which I’m stopping at in ride and then uh we’ll catch the train to Shanklin that’s the plan there we go pedestrian walkway the white link let’s do it I’m finally happier than I was in
London cuz it was raining in London and the forecast is just rain all day long here the sun is out in the aisle of white plus I’m enjoying this pedestrian path I think it’s pretty neat on the left hand side we’ve got the uh well way which goes all the way to
Ride Pier station up that way and we also see from here the hovercrafts which took over us on the ferry and on the right hand side got a road just for the uh cars it’s night I’m looking forward to uh Shanklin now so it’s time to go to Shanklin which is
The very last stop on the aisle of white and we’re going from this station here ride Esplanade so I just bought my ticket in fact here already which cost me 350 because I’ve got the network rail card and the next train is in 30 minutes station at the moment though looks a bit
Of a ghost town but I’m prepared obviously to wait for 30 minutes and from here we can see the ride Pier station just over there where we arrived on the ferry wow right I’m going to sit down and wait for this train but once I do that as
Promised let me show you what it says on the whale card that I uh got to travel from Victoria to uh ride and it shows you here on the ticket itself well this one’s from ride but valid by any permitted route and the right link so it’s always included traveling
From London or from ride to London the ferry and there’s Portsmouth so the train is arriving on this 8.3 mile raway track and it’s all operated by former underground line trains in fact my colleague told me about this and I didn’t believe him until I saw it it’s like a blast in the
Past let’s have a look on it and see if it is the Same this must have been on the district line in the old Days right I’m going to sit here probably get the best views I hope Was so I finally arrived in Shanklin at the end of the line you can see down the platform here where that red barrier is it’s where the train nowadays terminates and goes back to ride so from Shanklin to ride and vice versa but in the old days this part of the track used
To go one more station further down and that station was known as ventor and today you can still go there but obviously not on the train cuz there’s no more track you can go there by bus it’s a shame really cuz that ventor station was closed in 1966 when England won the World
Cup it’s beyond me why I closed it [Applause] [Applause] well after all that traveling I thought it’s time for a pint and I’m not spoiled for choice in this Old Village look at these buildings here we’ve got King Harry’s Bar saying it was built in 1882 wow you could easily do a pub
Around here got the village in the free house over here the old fatch tea shop even got a uh teapot and cup on the top there wow this is beautiful I think I’m going to head to the crab for Points so I’m beginning to like Shanklin especially because the last place I was at did not feel like I was in the UK look at this the distance between the prominade to the Sea the last person was that the pub had a Terrace on this kind of prominade and
That was a distance to the Sea that was just beautiful one thing I do want to highlight here though is the uh Clock Tower Beach here it is it says there but that’s the clock tower there the famous one for Shanklin and you can see just on the side here the lift that
Takes you up to the uh Town Center if you wanted to use that wow beautiful so it’s now time to head back to ride I’ve just walked from Shanklin to Sandown and you can see the pier behind me there it is got to see which is being a bit more
Aggressive and over there the White Cliffs of the other whites nice but before I go i’ like to thank you for watching this video please subscribe and like below the next video after this is going to be on Zambia which I’m heading to in two weeks time
I’m looking forward to it and I hope you all join me and watch that video too for now have a good weekend
