Good morning ladies and gentlemen and thank you for the introduction to sha and I’d like to uh say what an honor it is to have been invited to speak in this opening technical session at insc 2023 which understand is the first International um Indian nuclear Society

Conference um and I’d like to extend my sincere thanks to indan Society into NPC for uh for for the invitation to speak today I think about a very topical um important subject um which was I think covered uh perhaps alluded to in the introductory welcome speeches and I will perhaps

Delve in a little bit more depth into uh this historic announcement at cop very timely because it’s it’s ongoing uh to to at least triple nuclear capacity by 2050 uh so I’m I’m working for I am from the UK but I I work for World nuclear Association which is a um uh a

Global uh is the international organization that Sports the global nuclear industry yes we we we we represent industry not not government um it’s people Technologies and Enterprises uh we facilitate busino business interaction to advance good practice and we represent industry in the international forums uh that influence the industry’s

Regulatory and policy environment and and our mission is is simply to promote a wider understanding of nuclear energy so fundamental to nuclear Industries progress and social license to to build understanding of nuclear energy and I’d like to commend the video that npcr produced which I think is exactly

The type of Outreach and explanation that we need to to further our goals um so through producing authorative information developing common industry positions and contributing to the energy debate we have 200 members um uh in in over 40 countries this just explains briefly the the structure of of world nuclear

Association and um I’m honored to to being appointed the new uh head of the Department of membership and Business Development which was created this September um and my role is to try and improve the value proposition for uh existing members and to potentially expand the membership base of world

Nuclear Association um we think we have a there is a fundamental role for a global industry organization to help support this tripling objective um and you can see some of our strategic objectives and pillars that support our mission uh a very fundamental um I would say um value ad that we

Provide to our 200 members are the exclusive forums we we bring our members together uh on a regular basis um we do it in person since fortunately we we got over the covid pandemic but also we we convene our members regularly virtually as well um and you can see there that

The structure of our working groups that um you know cover the the really sort of key themes that will sort of underpin nuclear’s um progress uh I’m going to be talking today in particular about um let’s see if I can get the that the the fuel report uh working

Group uh which provides a very important reference for projecting Supply demand for nuclear fuel um the latest addition looks out to 2040 I’m going to be looking at uh two groups in unclear deployment and value chain working groups firstly Cordell which is aiming to remove one of the road blocks to um

An expansion of nuclear power namely the very national-based uh system we have for rep for licensing nuclear reactor designs and the sort of limited credit that’s been given to analysis done by other Regulators uh I mean looking at supply chain and long-term operation clearly absolutely critical for uh a scaling up

And speeding up of nuclear deployment is on time on budget deployment of nuclear reactors and the uh extended operation of the existing Fleet I’m also going to be talking about two working groups here in particular which I think are critical so Workforce and talent development we need to uh

Attract the brightest and we need to um it’s very important both to for them to to feel that they have a long-term career nuclear and that they are uh that they agree with the values that the nuclear industry represents and um also we need to retain them because uh when I

Look at sort of the younger people coming into our industry they are um interested to experience different fields and we want to keep them um we want to keep people in nuclear we need people in nuclear to to fulfill our um our objectives I’ll also be talking a little bit about

ESG um that stands for environment social and governance that is absolutely fundamental to enabling nuclear power to obtain Finance uh at reasonable rates at reasonable interest rates as it were to um to to uh to provide a very sort of economic form of of generation and uh these working groups I

Said they they are looking to they’re very collaborative um so our our our membership includes companies that are normally in competition and healthy competition is is good and Global competition is good because we we need to encourage competition encourages Innovation and uh it helps to bring um it encourages um uh

You know economies as well certain amount of competition and uh but in in terms of the world nuclear Association we’re looking to try and uh agree on common positions and those we represent to bodies like the Ia where we have an we we observe and uh we’re also looking

To to do studies together so that we can uh determine the important Trends in the market whether it to do with fuel or with um equipment that will be needed to supply the the future Fleet these are the the major conferences that we um that we host uh

We were we were delighted that Mr venod Kumar who is the station director at Kyer and I understand kaer has broken records in term of um uninterrupted operation uh and Mr V Kumar was one of our um very valued speakers at the Symposium this year in London we did a

We we cooperate with guano the world ass Association of nucle operation ators to run a a session uh looking at um operations of of the nuclear Fleet and supply chain we also organized an important fuel cycle conference with the nuclear energy Institute uh that’s the United States um

Uh trade Association and uh we will next be meeting uh we were in the Netherlands this year we will be in uh Kazakhstan uh in April um 2024 uh I’ll be talking about Cordell this uh initiative and the regional Workshop we’re holding in in Busan South Korea

Next May uh and uh we also host Spotlight events in existing and emerging nuclear countries so we’ve hosted those in Poland um Indonesia and Brazil um we’re looking to do one in in Kazakhstan too uh and those are events where we bring the leadership of the new nuclear industry um essentially leaders from

From the world nuclear Association board and to meet with the leaders from government and Industry in a particular country that is looking to develop nuclear and um they’ve been it’s been a very successful program so far and as mentioned we have a uh we we’re privileged to have an observer

Status at the key institutions that really set the Regulatory and policy framework for the nuclear industry and they really um you know they they really welcome uh the Consolidated view of the industry so a lot of the working groups are allowed to review the draft standards and the industry dis discusses

And then we submit our views and those are those are um I think we have an excellent relationship with with all of these uh bodies obviously we we’re not a decision decision maker that’s for the member state but we we we our voice is heard and that’s

Terrific many of you will know um world nuclear Association for the information Services we provide so we um we have around 200 information papers that we regulate regularly updated um and those are looking at those are sort of easily digestible papers that are for the really for for for the purpos of

Industry but also for um other stakeholders that need to understand aspects of nuclear energy we also Pro um support world world nuclear news which is our independent um news arm um and has been running now for 15 years and just the final part of this introduction about my about world Nu

Association is are the reports that we produce and I’ll be talking about the first two of those in more depth the nuclear fuel report um and World nuclear supply chain that are important Market based analysis of the supply demand for fuel and for the equipment systems and component

Structures that needed for nuclear power plants so moving now to the sort of really the the core message of I suppose of this whole um conference about nuclear needed for the energy transition and uh we we’re very proud to have um teamed up with the Emirates nuclear energy corporation which is obviously

The host utility um uh in in Dubai where cop is cop 28 is taking place and back in the summer we anoint uh we we launched a joint advocacy Initiative for the global nuclear energy industry and uh this focus is on the goal of recognition of

Nuclear as green a source of energy and advocates for a tripling of nuclear capacity we support and the initiative supports engagement with leaders from government business and the energy industry as well as advocates and Global Citizens um and it invites the support of nuclear associations and companies

Across the global industry and it’s been a it’s really um tapped into a very rich vein of support I mean I think we were very surprised at um the enthusiasm to sign our declaration at cop we have over 120 uh leading nuclear industry companies and associations that have

Have have joined the Net Zero call we’ve also um attracted significant um sponsorship as well for uh future activities that will continue between different cops uh I think perhaps importantly as well that is that the uh you know the the messages that netz and nuclear were um were were were were advocating have

Been picked up to a certain degree by the governments that have uh made a historic declaration at cop 28 I think um uh during the int welcome welcome um speeches it was alluded to that the the cop until recently nuclear was it was effaced it was excluded from pretty much

Any discussion we we were delighted if nuclear got mentioned once in in any of the discussions at cop it was very um very much on the fringes and I think probably starting with the Glasgow cop um that has begun to change and then we have really culminating in this very historic

Declaration um 22 countries um I think probably most prominently president macron of France but also leaders from four other G7 countries Canada uh UK um us and Japan uh as well as countries such as South Korea and UAE that have backed this this call and you know it’s not a there’s there

Hasn’t it’s not a cut off with looking for that well we are the the the the countries that have launched this are looking for other countries to to back the this declaration um and I know that India is is is planning to Triple its nuclear

Energy by TW by 2030 so um that uh it certainly on a national level it it is in keeping with this this um this call I do want to to emphasize though that this is how great uh how how in bigger challenge meeting this target will be uh

We mustn’t underestimate and I showed this this this slide um taken from um from pris really just to show how flatlined cap nuclear capacity has been um over the last couple of decades I mean we saw a bigger increase in the’ 70s and 1980s but then since then there’s really been

Um I would say I mean there’s been more actually increase in the amount of of electricity nuclear electricity generated but in terms of capacity it’s been a little bit stagnant so we’re talking about tripling capacity from approximately 400 uh gaw today to approximately um 1,200 um gws by 2050 this this is the

The scenario that’s talked about and actually that just to say that it’s not um uh it’s not a call that’s it’s a call that’s that’s consistent with other um scenarios such as the ipcc 1.5 degree median scenario uh calls for an a similar capacity and this doesn’t this actually

Translates into around 1,000 gaw of new build because we expect a certain amount of the existing uh infrastructure to to still be operating in 2050 based on uh extended the extended lifetimes that we’re achieving um tarapore for example it’s in its sixth decade I believe so you know and this is

This is the pattern I think throughout the world uh particularly for for light water reactors and um but you know currently the the the the rate of new build in the world is around is under 10 gaw per year so we’re looking at really around 40 G GS per

Year for the next 25 years to meet this target so so it’s it’s it’s a it’s a mon it’s a Herculean task one would say it really requires a lot of coordination it needs enabling mechanisms from government um it could be achieved through gwatt scale reactors um it could be achieved through

Smrs probably a mixture of of the two another challenge probably will be will be fuel supply um and we see that uh I think it’s worth putting into context here and and that you know come up to um 2011 there was huge anticipant when we had the previous nuclear Renaissance there was a

Lot of investment by the fuel cycle um into new capacity and of course there was a post um the accident in Japan there was um you know reduced uh expectations reduced capacity so there was there has been overc capacity in the market and I think the the fuel cycle industry is

Being very has been rightly quite cautious this time they they are excited um about the renewed enthusiasm for nuclear energy and um and they certainly the uranium producers are happy by the tripling quadrupling of the price of of spot price of uranium um they have a

Spring in their step when they come to our meetings now which is I guess is nice to see because they’ve had a difficult time but you know the this has led to um a downturn in in in in production and we see that sort of 2016 the annual Global

Production was over 60,000 tons and that’s reduced to uh 40 47,000 tons in 2020 and it’s it’s beginning to creep up again it’s it’s definitely going to creep up and I I’ll show how how the how the the fuel cycle industry will most likely one can never

Guarantee what but it will most likely Meet The increased demand for for nuclear fuel going forward so just to talk now about the um the Net Zero nuclear emission and and I’m going to sort of talk about the the second and third of of these points so um Net Zero nuclear

Wants to build understanding of the value of nuclear energy that’s what Indian nuclear Society is doing it’s what world nuclear Association does it’s our bread and bread and butter um it’s what a lot of our a lot of our com um member companies do on a very in a very

Effective way um but I’m going to focus more on on the the the political particularly the financial enablers to propel nuclear Energy’s growth um and then talk also about some of the the roadblocks that prevent nuclear from fully realizing its contribution to uh Global clean energy security so talking about the financial

Side of things um I I looked at the International Energy agency world energy investment 2023 so here we see uh annual clean energy investment for more or less the last um uh eight years and there’s been a I’d say an encouraging there actually been doubling both investment in nuclear um so

Predicted $63 billion for this year and um and and for renewable as well but you see it’s the amount in nuclear is is dwarfed by by the the investments in Renewables at the moment but you know I think the conditions could be conditions can be changed so that that

Amount increases and it needs to increase probably at a faster rate than it is currently so just looking at the some of the wording in the the cop governmental declaration so the participants I was very we were very pleased to see this specific reference to finance and director gra uh director General gry

Also referenced uh the financial aspects of having a Level Playing Field for for nuclear not disqualifying nuclear from Green sustainable Investments nuclear power is sustainable um sustainable form of energy and should be able to access this growing trillions of of green finance and it’s we we we we are making

Good progress so the participants in this pledge commit to mobilize investment in nuclear power including through Innovative financing mechanisms we invite shareholders of the World Bank the international financial institutions and Regional development Banks to encourage the inclusion of nuclear energy in their organizations’s energy lending policies as needed and to

Actively support nuclear power when they have such a mandate and encourage Regional bodies that have the mandate to do so to consider providing financial support to nuclear energy and finally to welcome encourage complimentary commitments from private sector Nos and development Banks and financial institutions so they really see this is

Is fundamental and this I think this is uh because of the the very upfront very high upfront Capital costs that have to go into Nuclear So the overall economic case for nuclear is very dependent on you know the rates of lending uh and and the finance that supports it it’s it’s absolutely

Critical um so so that is why it’s we need we feel we that the both governments and Industry need to remove this I say roadblock to to a faster accelerated growth of nuclear power so I mentioned that we have working groups exclusive forums for our members and the ESG working group is

Looking um particularly at influencing the the ongoing development of national uh Regional and inter interational sustainability taxonomies and green Bond Frameworks World nuclear Association really we stood soldier shoulder-to-shoulder with uh our partners at nuclear Europe which were lobbying when the taxonomy in the European Union level was being uh

Decided a couple of years back and that was really critical that we managed to get nuclear included as a uh in in the taxonomy as a a transitional technology but it will be cons it’s considered as green and that has been already been copied in other countries worldwide so uh that that was

A real um I think a success and this working group will also be trying to influence ESG rating agencies green Bond um second party opinion providers and other influential organizations within the sustainable Finance Community um and maybe just looking I won’t go through all those but at the

Bottom climate um we we we’re engaging particularly with the issb which is um the sustainability International disclosure standards standards developed by ifs ifs stands for the international financial reporting standards uh and they those are Accounting Standards issued by the IRS foundation in international Accounting Standards Board

Now this is not my it’s not my area of expertise but I understand any publicly listed company um fills their accounts according to irfs standards so this is really critical that in the RFS um isbs that’s their International sustainability Standards Board new sustainability related and climate related disclosure standards sorry it’s

A bit of a mouthful it’s it it’s and it’s it’s it seems very dry but it’s really important that the industry um and that nuclear gets isn’t discriminated against in these standards and we are uh we’re having a dialogue with issb um and and we’re doing our best to

Ensure that nuclear energy is fairly represented um and and and this is just this is an important example but there are examples like this all over the over the world where you know the the the Frameworks in which nuclear will develop I can’t emphasize this enough that unless we are vocal as an

Industry unless we we we stand together that they will exclude nuclear and there are a lot of opponents of nuclear that will try to exclude nuclear they will try to have nuclear um erased so we have to be at the table as an industry collectively um flying the flag

Championing nuclear energy is a sustainable uh energy source and uh you know we we we we we’re make we’re making progress but that we mustn’t underestimate the task so moving on to a different roadblock and uh this was something again alluded to by um director General gry um So currently differences in

Nuclear regulations between countries mean that designs must be modified before they can be exported and imported and you know a very sort of classic example of that is the epr reactor which is we know it’s being it’s it’s been um built in China and Finland uh it’s being

Built in France and the UK and and really there was there were quite significant design changes that being required according to National regulation and these this these have increased increase the costs and the time scales associated with deployment and they increase uncertainty they are a turnoff for

Investors and when we think about SMR deployment the SMR business model of factory line manufacturer as envisioned um you know you can no longer Supply multiple markets if if you’re having to change the the factory line for each country you’re exporting to I mean there’s probably a certain amount

Of change you can make but you can’t get the economies of scale that you really need uh so we back in 27 2007 we created the Cordell working group that stands for the co cooperation in reactor design evaluation and Licensing working group and it promotes the standardized deployment of reactor design so that’s

Not one reactor design some people that’s not at all what it’s advocating it’s advocating we we we want diversity in terms of designs but we want the ability for a vendor to be able to deploy the same design in different countries and not have to change it I

Mean there may be some local requirements uh according to the environmental conditions or seismic conditions but in general vendors should be able to Market and deploy the same design it’s critical again and and and director General gry understands this challenge um it it improves economics it means you have a

More robust supply chain because of the companies that that produce the components can can produce again in they they’re they’re happy to invest in a product that’s has a bigger Market um it improves public perception because if you’re having to change standards according to the jurisdiction again it it

Makes the public suspicious why are you having to you know why are they you know why do they have a a thicker um containment vessel than we do you know that’s it it doesn’t help nuclear win the trust of the public when there when there are these sort of

Differing designs but so so this is a really important area to work on and this is the initiative that was set up by the um IAA the nuclear harmonization and standardization initiative and and and this is the the the the goal of this is effective deployment a global deployment of safe

And secure Advanced nuclear reactors it’s a little bit ambiguous whether it’s just about SMR I think it’s about all advanced uh designs it there is a um a regulatory track and there is an industry track and we are actually involved in all both Regulatory and in the industry side because we’ve been

Looking at this topic for 15 years we we know what the challenges are are and where the emphasis needs to be put um I was talking last night at the welcome reception with a gentleman who talked about how can we accelerate the the nuclear infrastructure implementation for smrs and that is I

Think one of the areas that’s being looked at in the industry side can we cut so that the Ia has its Milestones approach there’s 20 different steps that the country needs to go through to prepare to uh deploy nuclear energy and but normally the the the United Arab

Emirates deployed that approach and it took around 10 years but can we can we cut that down to around 5 years because that would again be fundamental to um achieving this tripling of nuclear energy and scaling up uh at speed so it’s an important initiative but

We we’ve been we and we put throwing a lot of weight into this as industry um but we’ve been also been calling for some clarification of the objectives of nhsi because as I said really what is needed is for a road map to Regulators in different jurisdictions without surrendering their sovereignty

But to in a more um streamline way to be able to uh validate the analysis done by another compet regulator and rather than start from scratch and do all the analysis themselves so this is and this is already happening in in in a uh in in terms of the Canadian nuclear regulator

And NRC are looking are um reviewing uh in in a joined up way in a Cooperative way uh a advanced reactor design I think um the G design and um uh one of the M molten salt reactor designs and we also see cooperation at the European level uh on newood between

The Czech The Finnish and the French regulator so that this this is um encouraging but needs to accelerate we’ve brought out a report recently um entitled a framework for international regulatory efficiency to accelerate nuclear deployment um and uh we got support from Canadian nuclear Association and nuclear energy

Institute and uh it really goes into some detail about how um if you look on on on the right there that um how we can move toward from the you know from a near-term it it shows some near-term objectives and it shows where we need to go finally where we get Mutual

Validation acceptance of regulatory assessments of of reative designs amongst National Regulators but you know a lot of work has to be done before in terms of uh identification of the areas in which a common set of requirements can be agreed and then we’re not ask we don’t think that harmonization of

Regulations at a detailed level is feasible but it it the countries have sort of evolved too separately in in too varied way but that there can be mutual recognition through understanding of how each regulator has reached its conclusions and so that can be a kind of

Rosetta Stone that could be set up that that that you know aligns uh National Regulators on safety objectives and I mentioned that there’ll be a a Cordell Workshop uh and I invite the Indian nuclear industry to to come and attend that um it’s it’s in uh Busan the southern city there’ll be technical

Tours To the Gory nuclear power plant and to the uh de s and ability facility as well um so we we we this is a regional Workshop we were in France in Leon in a couple of years ago uh and uh We’ve we’ve also held them in Russia and uh

Elsewhere so do do please join that I think it’s going to be a really important meeting uh turning now to the to fuel um and uh I just this is a really a good example of what we World nuclear Association does bringing the industry together to conduct studies on important

Trends in the in the nuclear industry and this this report really has it’s been published since 1975 every two more or less every two years um and I I guess if those of you and and I’ll Show a slide later but if we look back at the um early 1980s there

Was a lot of new build around the world there was quite rapid development of nuclear in in France um in Japan in the United States uh almost 30 to 40 gaw of nuclear new build a year and there was a little bit of un there was certainly some concern

About whether we’d be able to fuel these billion dollar Investments and so this is when the the the decided that the industry the the producers and the utility should come together to to do some collective work to map out the potential supply and demand and supply

For spy demand for nuclear fuel in its different components and the report is still going to get today we we brought out an addition um just uh 3 months ago and um let me just emphasize again the how collabor collaborative an effort is 80 members took part it was chaired by EDF

And conine the we have one chair from the utility one from a producer and uh a really diverse set of subgroup chairs because we have chapters on demand on uranium conversion secondary Supply enrichmond fabrication um those are the uh different the the the um way the report is put together I

Won’t go into that now in detail but just to say it’s a lot of publicly information but also questionnaires um and some of them very sensitive ones that go through a third party for aggregation um and that’s all compiled by the Secretariat into this uh widely read and reference

Report just looking at some of the the findings of that 2023 report which really um align with this objective of tripling of nuclear power by uh 2050 there is a lot of good news and growing support for nuclear worldwide uh we see in Canada particularly in in um

Ontario uh decisions to um well both first of all to to extend the lives of the existing reactors but also a potential uh 4.8 gaw of new reactors and smrs as well um in the US there is um the infrastructure investment and jobs Act is

Um uh will will is is um I would say will will open the door to a lot of new new build in that country the UK France Poland UAE um I will um won’t go into the details but worldwide um there is good news to be had on on nuclear

Energy if we look at the upper scenario of the report which um so there were three scenarios a lower uh reference and upper scenario the upper scenario uh looks at generating capacity growing at about 5.4% annually reaching and that reaches 931 GW by 2040 so it’s pretty

Consistent with that 2050 uh that um um tripling on uh 1,200 gwatt um Target um and you know that that scenario is based on um increased political support and public acceptance um you see the conditions that would need to be met to reach that uh and just to look at

The really um sizable increase in in investment in in mining that would be needed I just look at the mining side of things but really this slide has showed also more to see the very sort of painstaking and thorough uh method that the group uses so they they they they

Define reactors that are obviously existing but then also planned um uh perspective and um also looking at unspecified Supply which could be the inventories that are being held by uh utilities and you know this is I think this is important because it just it gives a sort of uh projection of the

Market and and it just helps the the players in the industry to to make the correct investments um it it doesn’t mean it means they can make investments in an informed way and um you know it’s it’s a really important working group at the moment just to say unspecified

Supply is I say inventory um unspecified secondary Supply uh potential project expansion which sometimes the mining companies don’t talk about publicly they’re waiting for the conditions in the market to be right um and uh other potential Supply but um you know that there is I think there is the ability there is a

Really solid base for the nuclear industry and certainly the the the the the resources worldwide if you look at the red book for the nuclear to to fuel the nuclear future that we we would like to see um turning to the supply chain um activities so moving away from fuel to equipment

Structures uh and systems for nuclear power plants so this is our sister report um and in incidentally this is another benefit of of of membership is that these two um market reports are available to the membership and but they’re on sale to to non-members but something to to make membership

Worthwhile and uh this is this working group is uh mission is to enable an international supply chain that is robust competitive and adaptive um it’s looking to exchange best practice on supply chain strategies both for the existing Fleet but also for lto new build and SMR and AMR uh

Advanced modular reactors it’s looking to promote adoption of innovation within the supply chain uh public private funding collaboration and the sustainable business environment and it’s also very importantly trying to provide supply chain companies that are members with a voice with within the international uh Community um has a four-pillar approach

To outlining the key market trends and um you could see those listed there deployment localization and business environment industrial Innovation SMR industrialization and quality culture this report also came out um in uh it came out in in August this year uh and uh you can see there the the the

Structure of the report so it starts by looking at the um the report looks both at the the supply chain today then it also using the the projections in the fuel report it looks at the potential demand or the capacity for nuclear look out to 2040 and translates That Into You

Know the need demand for components and uh Etc uh so there’s a a lot of um a lot of case studies within this report uh as well um so this is just to before I get on to the case studies just to say that this is an example of the market evaluation

That the report does and uh this is in the case of long-term operation as as many of you aware 2third of of nuclear power plants today are over 30 years of age um and the report projects that upwards of 140 units may be subject to long-term operation by 2040 and require

Extensive refurbishment and modernization I mean it’s really quite um and this is of course to do with climate is also to do with the uh energy security challenges that have have have developed particularly in the last two three years due to geopolitical events um a lot of countries are looking at at

At long-term operation of existing unit and that presents a market opportunity which we estimate at 50 to 100 billion and potentially 3 to 4 billion doar a year in international procurement so that’s this kind of Market information um analysis that’s provided in the report it also gives some case studies

On localization and this one here shows the um localization of of Commodities within China for its ap1000 uh deployments and you see on the right uh some other planned localization of nuclear power plant construction or refurbishment so these are the what the the the countries say they

Would they intend to do the intentions so that’s again for suppliers it’s a useful um indicator of where the opportunities might may lie uh in new build programs cuz obviously the there are uh you localization is a is is a important objective for many countries um I say the report also does

Has some goes into a lot of detail on quality there are um analysis of how um the balance of requirements need to be spread in the supply chain and it’s obviously at the top tier you need to have the fullest standards of nuclear safety and security culture and then

Perhaps quality culture lower down the supply chain but it’s uh an analyzed in some detail and discussed at working groups about meeting quality standards just to point out we have had challenges in the nuclear industry uh in recent years with in deploying nuclear on time and on budget and we did produce

A report um around 5 years ago looking at lesson learning in nuclear Construction projects that’s freely available on our website we’ve also this group has already also produced reports on countering counterfeit uh forent and suspect items in the supply chain and um more recently we’ve produced a report on Advanced manufacturing of nuclear

Components um again these These are reports of are free to access another event that I would like to um to promote to to com particularly to companies here that are in in the supply chain um is is a uh event that’s taking place a workshop that’s being hosted by

The oecd’s ukar energy agency in Paris in March 5th and 6th of March next year and we’re very proud to be part of the organizing committee and and and a partner in this event uh and this is very much a workshop looking at um um you know look looking at uh four

Areas Supply Chain management risks and challenges what are the new challenges for small modu reactors how to improve the quality of deliveries and organization culture to enable safe and reliable delivery and I think what’s going to be really interesting is that there will be Regulators from the uh I

Think it’s 24 oecd countries nuclear Regulators attending and uh so be about 50 Regulators 100 industry if if you’re interested in attending I would recommend to to register soon because I think it’s going to be highly in demand this event there a obviously a lot of opportunities

Opening up for suppliers and this is a great I think strategic opportunity to learn what the expectations are from from Regulators so the F you’ll be glad to hear the final area of my presentation long presentation um and this is just looking at the the the area of talent and

Retention uh and a recent working group that we’ve created is called Workforce and talent development working group this is tasked with identifying and addressing um skills gaps in the industry um sharing successful strategies for building a resilient nuclear Workforce including Talent attraction and diversity Equity inclusion strategies from women in the

Sector and other Industries um discussing the imple implementation of effective retention development and succession planning strategies and looking at strategies to develop a proactive Workforce and Leadership pipeline so it’s it’s it’s I think it’s going to be quite a sensitive group it’s quite new but there is I think quite a

Lot of competition out there to attract the brightest and the best uh to companies around the world so I think like in our fuel group there’s going to be a certain amount of sharing but there’s going to be a certain amount of you know some of the strategies are

Going to be um I think people are going to be keeping some information close to their chest but there needs to be a certain amount of collaboration in this area because the industry cannot we need to we need a pipeline of experts we need to attract I think the whole industry needs to

Attract um Professionals in and who and to professionals that are inspired to devote their careers as many of you have to nuclear power um alongside the working group which is open to members we have another initiative it’s we called the world Nu University um this was founded in 2003

By ourselves by the international atomic energy agency uh wano the world Association of nuclear operators and the oecd nuclear energy agency and it’s been a really I think a great success um it its Mission really is to inspire and develop the competencies of Future Leaders in the nucar industry by delivering Innovative world-class

Programs and facilitating International Partnerships to drive Equity inclusion and diversity of thought um the flagship ship event is a summer Institute that we’ve held um I think with 16 or 17 times now uh it’s it’s a five week very intense leadership development program we we bring together leaders from governments and from industry

And to um yeah to inform and to provide a network to these Future Leaders in the nuclear field and to give them the Panorama to help them understand the the regulator policy framework to understand how industry what industry’s priorities are and but I think most importantly

It’s it is lectures but it’s also a lot of group work where the young people come together and are given challenges and take um case studies and um so it’s it’s not it’s not a it’s not a passive program it’s there is a lot of inputs but there also about them developing

Their skills in leadership and presenting and decision making and they often get asked to make presentations in in front of dignitaries such as um rapael grai which is you know quite a quite a daunting task the next uh summer Institute will be in R de Jiro Brazil um in 2024 and

And I think that’s going to be a very popular destination because R is a is a fabulous City and uh obviously there’ll be technical tours to some of Brazil’s very diverse nuclear facilities um and and incidentally the the iaea um through the technical cooporation program they fund around 15

To 20 places on the summer Institute so there are opportunities from wherever you are in the world um I just wanted to this is my penultimate slide I just wanted to say that you know building 40 gaw of n nuclear capacity for the next 25 years

Is a daunting task but it has we’ve achieved something similar to that before I alluded to that earlier so in the 80s um we had correct Connection rates um between 30 and 40 um uh reactors a year I think it’s reactors number of reactors um and you know we we we achieved that

Successfully we were able to fuel them and uh maintain high level of quality so it’s not something that we’re being new unprecedented it’s something that’s been achieved so we need to refine that ambition and we need to uh the that that motivation I don’t think it’s difficult

Given the the the the stakes and given the fact that nuclear is not just that perhaps viewed in the past as a sort of necessary evil it’s actually been seen as something positive that creates jobs it creates cheap energy and um it’s uh energy security as well so those those

Values are be are being appreciated more and more and finally then so nuclear is increasingly seen by governments industry investors as essential to the clean energy transition declarations for tripling of nuclear capacity top 28 are historic um although meeting such a Target presents major challenge uh in

Ter in terms of un of building understanding of NC’s value building financial and pol political enablers and removing uh roadblocks we will be capable of meeting that Target um it requires competition it requires Innovation but it does paradoxically also require a great deal of collaboration um and uh uh in terms of

Developing those studies on the market developing good practice um and speaking as one voice as an industry so thank you sorry for the very long presentation but I hope it kept your interest and uh thank you very much for your attention
