Tavistock Canal
This is a fairly level walk along the wooded banks of an early 19th-century canal, that was constructed to link Tavistock’s copper-rich mining areas to the port of Morwellham.
The whole route, there and back is 4 and a half miles, but you can easily shorten it by turning around whenever you feel like it.
The route starts in the Bedford car park close to the centre of Tavistock. This first section through the Meadows Park, is along a level tarmac path suitable for pushchairs and unassisted wheelchairs.
At the end of the park, take the path through an underpass. On the far side of the underpass double back to rejoin the towpath. This section is narrow, with few passing places and so if it is busy, you may wish to stay on the adjacent cycle path.
Shortly after reaching a footbridge, the canal path narrows, so fork left onto the cycle path. After about 100 yards at the bottom of a slope, turn right onto a steep path into the woods to rejoin the canal path.
Beyond here the path becomes more uneven with some slightly muddy sections, and just before Shillamill Viaduct the path narrows to 2 foot, 7 inches or 80 centimetres for a short section. As such it is only suitable for careful drivers of more robust all-terrain push chairs and off-road mobility vehicles.
After crossing over an aqueduct that carries the canal across the River Lumborn valley, the footpath ends. From here, turn around and follow the canal back to Tavistock.
