I keep seeing this adapter advertised. How does it work? It allows the disc rotor to be threaded onto the freewheel side of the hub. But if you do that, how do you install a freewheel? Has anybody got an explanation for the proper use of this?

It’s for centerlock rotors. The opposite side from the cassette/freehub. It’s hard-mounted to the hub and spins with the hub.
Flip flop single speed hubs are threaded on both sides – this would allow you to run singlespeed with disc brake.
Probably for the “flip” hubs where one side has a fixed gear sprocket, and the opposite side can take a freewheel single speed sprocket.
It looks like a standard [right-handed thread](https://bike.bikegremlin.com/3965/right-and-left-handed-thread/). So, when it’s on the right hand side, the pedalling torque will try to tighten it further. When you flip the wheel so that it’s on the left hand side (where your disc brake caliper mount is), the braking torque will try to tighten it. So, it should work OK.

You can use this on a freewheel rear hub to make a disc brake front hub. I once bought a cheap second-hand wheel like that and only later noticed it wasn’t a native disc brake hub. The adapter/disc combo even had non-standart bolt spacing, but fit fine on the bike.
