Pic 1 is the “right” way to fit them, with the fins facing down. In my opinion the airflow is limited meaning limited cooling
Pic 2 is the “wrong” way to fit them, but makes more logical sense to me as the airflow is improved meaning better cooling.
Am I missing something?

I mean I’d go with what the engineers designed. I genuinely don’t see there being an appreciable difference in cooling. The bike is moving, airflow will never be an issue. The fins are just surface area for heat dissipation.
Now i might be wrong, but pic 1 seems to capture air and send it down to the pads/rotor, where it will help cool them down.
Pic 2 doesn’t seem like it will send the air down to the pads/rotor quite as efficiently.
