Part of the fun of royal public engagement is seeing the royals meet people from communities all over the world. But in second place is the group of wonderful and unexpected friends the royals meet along the way.

We know that the royals are avid animal lovers, from the late Queen and her famous corgis to Queen Camilla and her lively Jack Russell Terriers Beth and Bluebell.

But aside from these royal dogs, Europe’s royal families have met some cute animals and had some often amusing public interactions β€” we’ll never get the image of King Charles taking a bald eagle off our heads.

Princess Kate is known for her maternal instincts and it seems to extend to animals. The Princess was seen meeting Alfie, an apricot therapy pup being funded by the ELHT&me charity using a grant from NHS Charities Together, during a visit to Clitheroe Community Hospital in 2022.

Prince William has been an animal lover since his childhood. Here the young prince is seen taking a relaxing ride on his pony (how very royal) at Highgrove with his late mother Princess Diana.

Who would have thought – the King of the United Kingdom with a pig? Charles was seen promoting the message of buying British food and helping British farmers by posing with a pig and local farmer Peter during a visit to the Warriner’s Organic School farm in Oxfordshire in 2003.

In 2012, the then Duchess of Cornwall was spotted holding the cutest koala at Government House in Adelaide, Australia during the second leg of her Diamond Jubilee Tour. It doesn’t get any more amazing.

Perhaps our favorite of all is this stunning moment when the King and Queen came face to face with Zephyr, the bald eagle, and the Army Air Corps mascot during a visit to the Sandringham Flower Show in 2015.

During a visit to the Sheldrake Wildlife Orphanage in Nairobi National Park in 2023, Queen Camilla was spotted in a perfect moment with an elephant to celebrate Kenya’s 60th anniversary of independence.

The Princess Royal saw an award-winning bull during her visit to the Westmoreland County Fair in Milnthorpe in 2021.

Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh met an adorable guide dog at the British National Cycling Track Championships at the National Cycling Center last February, and the pup certainly impressed her.

Prince Harry was spotted as a child with his parents, then-Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana, at home at Highgrove House, joining their furry roster with William’s pony.

The late Princess of Wales was seen in 1986 chatting with sheep farmers at the Suffolk Fair, an annual agricultural fair held in Trinity Park, Ipswich, with a group of woolly friends.

Meghan Markle met the cutest Jack Russell named Minnie during her visit to Mayhew, a London-based animal welfare charity in 2019, showing off her love of animals in action.

Princess Charlotte showed her affinity for animals similar to her mother when she met Springer Spaniel Stella at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships in 2023 with her parents, the Prince and Princess of Wales, as well as her brother, Prince George.

Prince George was like a duck to water when he visited Australia with his parents in 2014 when he was just one year old and met Bilby, named after the young prince, during a visit to Taronga Zoo in Sydney.”

Ok that’s it for this episode. Thanks for watching.
