*I am wearing gifted Santini kit in this video

Hello everybody I’m super excited because this Friday it’s International women’s day oh yeah so to celebrate that I’m doing three videos to celebrate women in cycling first up today I’m meeting the one and only Nikki Bartlett a GB Pro triathlete so not only does she cycle she also runs and she swims

Basically she ties herself out by the sounds of it I’m really excited to find out all about her training how she got into Triathlon how hard it is because from looking at those TR athletes it looks very very tiring I can’t see myself doing it that’s for sure um but

Yeah let’s go meet her let’s go for a ride and have a chat oh she has also told me she’s planned the route and she did say she’s going to put a cafe in so I’m sold let’s go take too I’m not going to lie I just went wrong right we’re at

Nikki’s house we’re on a lovely sofa unfortunately a dog’s not here today little I’m very disappointed about but um Nikki is looking lovely and bright thank you I will get my bright kit on before we go out on the ride and but before we ride I just wanted Nikki to

Explain a bit about who she is and how she got into Tri on yes my name is Nikki bartler I’m a longdistance professional triathlete um I got into sports a complete novice uh about I think about 12 years ago now actually um got the bug

Straight away and here I am today as a professional worked myself up through the age group ranks for about four years and then I’ve been a professional since like 2015 2016 absolutely loving it don’t want it to stop based here in lfra uh we go away a lot we just come back

From L Roti and um yeah tron’s a a pretty unique special Sport and the Trion Community is amazing so yeah I love it wow and when you how did you actually start what made you think right I want to go and try so I used to be a

Rower so I was on the GB Rowan world class start program which was based well I was based down south near kind of ring kasham Maiden head area yeah um and I had kept getting injured like rib stress fractures and I can remember my friend

One day was like I’m going to do this half Iron Man what is that and she told me and I was oh wow that is long how far is a half so half is uh 1.9 K swim right a 90k bike and then you finish on the

Half marathon oh my so when she described that to me I was like that sounds crazy yeah and then because it sounded crazy I was like oh maybe I’ll give it a go and at the time I couldn’t really swim and that’s how I met Beck my

Other half cuz she taught me how to swim um and then literally as soon as I did my first one uh I went back to Rome for a bit and then I just kept getting injured row and just and me and my coach sat down like maybe Trion could be

Something else you could go into yeah uh so that’s how I got into it really it was quite quick fast moving um wellow from going from not being able to swim to yeah literally had to learn how to swim and kind of develop through age

Group ranks taking my time uh I met be and cuz I’d come from like an elite roam kind of setup she’s like oh so what’s your Ambitions in the sport I was like I want to be a pro and she’s like okay let’s get in the water let’s do a couple

Of moments I was like oh lengths maybe make one she obviously never never said oh this is going to be a big challenge but um but yeah started from there and here I am today and what what’s your sort of biggest achievement to date would you say oh goodness I it’s hard to

Tell um but I last year won IM my Wales which was a home race and it’s kind of that was my first pro longdistance race and um to go in there with the crowds and all the support was pretty special I’d say that’s probably the highlight of

My my career so far but I’ve also got about be D think seems to think I’ve got 30 podiums now but I didn’t I thought it was around 25 yeah cuz I looked it said on your on your Instagram it said 20 so

I I need to edit that a bit and I’ve got two top 10 at World Champs 7.3 World Champs so yeah that they’re all very special memories and what’s the difference between the cuz Iron Man is different from the triathlon 70.3 basically double the distance right a

3.8k swim right 112 mil which is 180k on the bike and finish on the marathon jeez that’s just crazy I how you do that it’s Bonkers and which would you say is your favorite part is it the swim the run or the bik definitely not the [Laughter]

Swim um I really enjoy the run but I think like yeah I can’t side between bike and run really like like you went to the Peaks yesterday Peaks on a sunny day cycling is just incredible but we also go there running I think run because you know just need a pair of

Shoes off in the way and um yeah it’s hard to tell but I love both but probably running just sneaks in there yeah I I do like running as well but I just find it so much harder than cycling yeah yeah is hard this TOS for yeah

Let’s get out on the bike and hopefully you’re not going to go too fast cuz I’m actually quite tired from yesterday let’s go okay cool now before I met Nikki we did chat on we had a WhatsApp chat didn’t we sent me a few pictures of

Your gym and I was like I need to see this in real life wow this is like my happy place it’s taken us about 8 years to get to the point where we’ve got a space like this WOW uh kit is most it out for less than £1,000 that’s so good

Majority of it it’s on the flooring which is about 350 from just some eBay flooring really yeah then non-sponsored marit kit um yeah we me and beex were both here this morning doing a bit of the workout look like you had good weather for Wales yeah it was

Boyant it’s like 30° wow you could be abroad yeah this was uh my my be won that one last year the rest of it is pretty much Wales yeah it’s boiling cuz I went on training camp a couple weeks before to L’s roty and everyone’s taking

The Mi out of me they’re like I think you need to be in the UK training for away ended up boiling it was like literally 30° bike yeah oh wow and then beex decides which one’s going on here and then the rest go in the Attic which one’s your most prized one

Here where’s your whales whales where’s my whales one God don’t know oh no my know where it is oh here it is found it found it and then uh the trophies so it’s like you do the swim yeah that’s how the swim goes two loops

And then bik course you do one Loop of this and two bigs this and then the run is literally like about 4K up this hill turn around zigzags through the town do it time four wow so 112 M on the bike yeah 26.2 run and 2.4 swim on my neck

Along we go wo I was noticing how very nice and tand you are I know how long were you in L Roti for we’re in L roti two weeks and we got back 2 days ago nice and then you’re off again yeah so we’re off next Saturday for a month in

Spain wow Jet Set well if you get to go abroad all the time dude tra on I might I might take it up myself I know beex is uh driving out and bringing our dog tit oh oh we got some more sness hello how’s everyone today yeah yes so tit our

15year old dog 14 15y Old Dogs coming out on our first board trip a have you got a little uh thing you can put him on the bike yeah yeah no we actually hav’t got one for Christmas really yeah so uh beex is going to bring out her little

Chopper bike yeah put the basket on the front come out on run sessions I can’t wait to see some videos of that yeah we’re get the content good nice not quite the piz street but still nice long we go a little YY coming up Nikki’s up for

A yippy aren’t you I’ll definitely be in for a yippy so all origin I don’t really know what I just started saying yippe when I went downhill and you kind agree from there good yipp one coming up great stuff so you really have to go for it like this

Woohoo there we go and the Walkers probably think what Earth they doing fire oh we got another one coming up 3 two one yipp yipp woohoo hello horses good morning oh this is great do you see many animals when you’re out on your training rides like abroad there’s loads of

Camels really and uh we’re with a group who Haven been there before and I kept saying oh you got to go see the camels and they weren’t there they were like cuz they go tracking off into the volcano a and they were never there so

They thought I was making it up oh no oh blow me neck look at the flood don’t think I want to take a penny through there I don’t think she’ll be very happy about it yeah the flood goes on quite far and probably quite deep so we’re say

We’re saying it’s a no it’s a nogo turning around from the floor Nikki just said she actually swims you can’t see it very well she swims in there how far did you swimming there uh good hour hour hour and 15 oh isn’t it freezing oh no

Not this time here oh right thank God I’m like I don’t really like to get in unless it’s 17° oh nice not I wait hardore one yeah in Lera we’re in the sea the sea it was still nearly 20° in the sea so that was lovely could you see

Some Tri fets going in Blowing wet suits and all sorts in the winter I’m like no it’s not for me not for me I don’t like being cold I reckon uh we get you up for a nice hot race I’ll try I actually do you know what I have said I would try

Trong cuz I I did used to be a swimming teacher I do like running and I do like cycling so but definitely not an Iron Man I can’t be doing a marathon well we can start on the Sprint start start how far the Sprint uh I think it’s uh oh is

It 750 swim yeah uh 20K by 5K run oh that’s all right yeah we’ll start your that’s all right I can do that that’s it you don’t have to go down to the long long start the Sprint and to be fair you might just prefer that yeah right I’ve

Said it on YouTube now so I’ll have to sign myself up for one normally it’s the top of the hill dance we’re not at the top of the hill we’re at the cafe so we call it the cafe down St so basically what you do is you go like this and then

Click like I’m this uncoordinated person nearly we’ll call it a click right you ready 3 2 1 action 3 2 1 one click hey next time you finish a Tron or an I got to do that do that down the Finish life yeah I don’t know how you

Feel about Cream Egg but I love Cream Egg so much choice I do love flat Jack as well quite lemon drizzle that is good one that one looks good though oh yeah that’s the big the big one oh carrot cake Carriage probably not just delayering to to layer up aren’t you

Yeah this Bas layer is BAS layer I’m just like it’s like furry I want one of them they didn’t have um porridge very upset about that they did have blankets though so we’re happy about that so I’ve gone for a classic beans on toast orax to lunch you’re putting more layers on

And you’ve gone for what did you go for I went for uh the tomato mozzarella and pesto Panini o lovely or toasty one of them while we wait for our lovely lunches to arrive I just thought have a bit more of a chat with Nikki because we’ve been chatting while we’re riding

And you got some really great stuff to say I think for starting Triathlon cuz when I originally think about Tron and wanting to start I think one of the big barriers is the cost yeah yeah it’s a massive it’s a massive power and barrier to people in the sport yeah

And um when I started like I bought £ 150 bike off eBay yeah borrowed a wet suit off a friend um and that that got me started it was an and people are so kind and tri on community like people let you borrow stuff and there’s always

You know some good Bargains you can get as well when you know where to go yeah and that’s amazing cuz I think sometimes you think oh you need like a Tron bike and all sorts and what what bike did you start on just literally like a road bike

It was 50 quids um I went up to leads to get it came back and it was like my little baby that got me through like the first couple of years in Triathlon and I did so much exploring around the country on it like I went did loads of Point too

Riding absolutely loved it that’s really good yeah so yeah you don’t need to buy all the expensive stuff to start and you also don’t need to go long to start there’s loads of Sprint the Super Sprint there’s Olympic distance 7 points for the Iron Man there’s so much you can get

Involved in or you can start J on and do run bike run yeah I think that’s what I might I would probably start with is run like leave the swim I just think don’t you get really cold when you come out of the water and then uh no cuz like

There’s loads of like Obviously good kit you can put on um so like you can come out of the water take your time and transition to put the right kit on so keep warm would you say for women in the sport is there quite an even split

Between the women and the men or is it is there more men I’d say like there is like obviously more men competing and in particular races like not all Races um but I love getting involved in from community and I’ll do anything to give advice and and encourage women into

Sport um I mean like about 5 days ago I did a video birthday message for a woman who’s doing a first ever I think first ever Iron Man it’s going to be Iron Man Wales and she watched me the whole race and um she sent me a message after the

Race saying you’ve just inspired me to sign up and that is literally everything that’s about for me yeah um so I gave her a birthday video message the other day and um yeah like if you encourage anyone to start and then also join a local Triathlon Club cuz there’ll always

Be people around your ability um and you can share the journey to the race together cuz that is what the best part of it is is is the process the meeting people the journey and you know doing things you think you can’t do yeah you make friends for life like some of my

Best friends are in the sport oh that’s lovely I think that’s what I love about when I do my longdistance cycling it’s like you think you can’t do it but then when you do achieve it it’s like oh wow that’s mive and all the effort that goes

Into it and and how long it takes to train and how many hours a week do you have to train anything between the kind of 20 and 28 hours drinks are coming awesome thank you very much so this a hot chocolate lovely thank you that’s mine there you are what’s in that hot

Chocolate galaxy galaxy the mo that’s Kyle behind the camera brilliant and then the Americano thanks so much cheers I think once we’ve once we’ve had a hot drink so might go inside to eat our food cuz a bit cold aren’t we Freez yeah about how many hours a week do you train yeah

About between the 20 28 is might go up to a bit 30 if there’s bit more cycling it all depends on what you’re focusing on cuz at the moment I’m not running said to me on the ride like you started literally just 25 met swim that’s all

You could do and then now yeah eight well you’ve been doing it professionally for eight years is it fulltime for eight years God yeah it will be about eight years which just flown by I feel like I’ve got another eight years left yeah is like come on not all your life yeah I

Just love it I don’t want it to stop yeah living the dream yeah literally living the dream like wake up every get every day get and do this it’s just yeah it’s just the dream really yeah but it’s not all easy as it cuz you’re coming back from inur that’s it injuries and

Stuff is tough like I’ve been in out injured really since like September October time um it’s just tiny baby steps forwards like the stuff which is Big Milestones is just stuff you take for granted sometimes every day like that’s I think in January I started walking again like I was off walking for

A good like 12 weeks yeah CU what was it that you injured uh I tore my planter and then I got severe PL FAS as well around it uh so it’s a bit of a long long one to come back from and just kind of like this baby steps forward a big

Milestones yeah but you’re not giving up that’s the main no not giving up um and just taking each day as it comes really and what’s the message you give to a woman that’s sitting here watching this or a man sitting here watching this and thinking oh I’m going I might give it a

Go but I don’t know if I can do it give it a go cuz you’ll get the bugs straight away uh join the local club and get involved with with the local community cuz the Trion Community is insanely amazing it’s just the best part and I think once you start There’s No Going

Back you just you just like you get the bug and you’ll be like oh now I want to maybe do this in a different country and go and see a different country and go on a family holiday with it and W yeah just give it a go cuz once you start um and

Yeah surround yourself with with amazing people as well yeah if it’s anything like the cycl community then it’s definitely going to be amazing cuz we’re well I know I’m part of it but I say they’re a lovely lot so and random question when you go when you’re on like

Your Tron your or your long ride and you finish your Triathlon yeah you come home what’s the one meal you just love to have oh I do like really salty chips oh yeah right so we’ve moved inside CU it was so cold out there it was just freezing and

But I’ve got the biggest bowl plate of beans on toast ever so I’m really excited to get that down my gullet and oh yeah look at that Ching out so we’re going to leave it there because we’re going to enjoy our food now and then we’re going to enjoy riding back

Without the camera so thank you so much for watching ladies get yourself out on a chlon and uh thank you so much for for having us today Nikki and uh thanks having me a lot yeah tempting me to give trath on a go but yeah it’s time to eat now so goodbye

  1. Love her passion & enthusiasm. Also, you're a good interviewer, Amy. Good questions & well done giving her space to answer (some people talk over their interviewee).

  2. Do what you love, and love what you do. Exactly what we see in Amy and Kyle's video's. Nikki has so much happiness from what she does. Love to see people being this happy and enthusiastic to share what they love to do.

  3. Just curious as to whether you are realistically aiming to complete APN24 in 72 hours? Per RWGPS APN is 107 miles shorter than PBP, but has 10,500 more feet of climbing. PBP allows drafting and APN does not. You finished PBP in 72 hours. Did you take more than two 3-hour sleeps during PBP? APN requires two.

  4. I completed my first triathlon at the age of 57. Started with Sprint distance, then Olympic distance to 70.3. I’m recovering from an injury and starting to look at a full Ironman next year some time. I love the community. You can do triathlons on the cheap or you can go whole hog but you’ll enjoy it no matter what. If you can cycle PBP and 24 hour time trials, you can do a full Ironman. It’s mor mental than you think, and you’ve proven that you are mentally strong and capable. Good luck!

  5. Loved this! I’ve entered my first triathlon (sprint) in the summer (Hathersage Hilly), I’m hoping that I can work with my ED team and my gym to manage to do it. Run is the bit that scares me as it’s by far my weakest and it’s at the end damit! I swam competitively as a child/teen and cycling is just my norm but only took up running in the summer (though did break the 25 minute 5k barrier last week 🎉)

  6. it wasn't until this very day that i found out what you've been calling "flapjacks". here stateside, it's a completely different animal! and it looks like a delicious one too!

  7. Brilliant. I am not a lady but I am hoping to do my first 70.3 next year when I will be 60. A bit late in life to get started but it is something I have been wanting to do for a long time and only just found the time to train for. I am okay with the swimming, and happy with the running, but the cycling needs a lot of work this year. As a start I have bought a proper road bike as the Halfords MTB was getting a bit hard to flog around the hilly roads for any distance and speed, so hopefully I will get some bike endurance built up over the coming months.

  8. Really cool! I didn't realise the triathlon community was so accessible. She's so inspiring to listen to! Great video, thank you both (and Kyle for great filming!!)

  9. That's sorted then , Hawaii ironman in 2025 now yer hooked 😮😊😂 ps if I can complete a 3 day gbe cycle event in June which should put me in shape , I might try a mini though terrible swimmer😂

  10. Fun interview/video! Nikki is cool to chat and get along with, and a fun guest also. I'm excited to see you joining in on some rides or tris with her in the future Amy.

  11. Amy, what a lovely video really enjoyed watching it. You definitely have a natural rapport with people when you talk to them. I think you should have a go at a triathlon. I did triathlon racing years ago. The swimming part of the triathlon was completed in a swimming pool and not outdoors, sprint distances so 400 to 600 metres in the pool. So no wetsuit required. I really enjoyed them and they were a lot of fun. You have all the kit needed already, a bike, running shoes, etc…

  12. Nikki is so approachable, decathlon great for kit and have seen every type of bike at the sprint events., which can be pool based and breaststroke is not uncommon.
