I’m seeing some ads for paid self-supported bike tours, such as the Grand Escape Italy/Slovenia tour ) [thegrandescape.cc](https://thegrandescape.cc)) The registration cost is 137 Euros, and you get insurance for the event, a gpx file, a paper file, a bottle of wine and some other trinkets. No SAG, no support, no accommodations. Is there anyone who participated in events like this? Would you do it again? I’m curious about the value such a tour provides and whether it could be worth the money.

It’s a great way to start bike packing for pretty minimal cost. A positive for me is that local experts have found and ridden a great route for you. Can be difficult to find if you e never ridden in the country. Your paying for local knowledge which is priceless if you enjoy riding
I think it might be trying to have an organized event without attracting racers or promoting a racing vibe, which many of the bikepacking events have become. I don’t want to be too cynical but I’m guessing there’s probably a small money making component too.
Maybe the appeal is that you’ll be in a larger group and riding a vetted route. It also means you’re competing against a larger group for campsites, lodging, etc. during the defined period.
It could be good if one is relatively inexperienced or just wants a social aspect and has friends who don’t ride, or you really want to see a place and the ride/route is reliable.
