Strange design for bike. Seller said it’s a Giant Defy frame with an integrated seat mast. What is the purpose for this design?

Common for Giant bikes to do this, they usually reserve it for their highest end carbon bikes. They still offer bikes like this, as do other boutique custom frame builders.
I think the idea is it adds stiffness to the frame as there’s less flex at the seatpost junction. Otherwise I think it’s just there to look badass. Obviously you have to cut the seat mast down to your preferred seat height, which hurts retail value and makes it near impossible to fly with the bike.
I had a Giant TCX cyclocross bike that had an integrated seat mast like this. It was a great bike and insanely light weight

The seat tube conceals a radio transmitter that, placed that high up, can cover a 100km radius.
