Noticed some bad vibrations under braking so decided to service my wheels only to find that the axle is cracked. How do I remove the axle? Does it need persuasion with a mallet or is there some kind of retention system that I’m unaware of?

Every hub has a rebuild instructions. I recommend checking that out. That being said, yeah, most likely needs to be driven out with a mallet. Good news is that you don’t have to worry about cracking the axle. You probably will need new bearings too.
Mallet and drift pin/punch. I’d recommend a dead blow mallet.
I’d throw some penetrating oil on it.
