I visit the five towns in Kent with the worst reputations – apart from Sheerness because that’s my hometown – and rank them from 5 to 1 (1 is worst)!

Welcome to Kent The Garden of England I’m going to be ranking the five towns in Kent with the worst reputation from number five the least worst town to number one the worst town starting off here in Margate welcome to Margate possibly the most famous bucket and Spade Beach Resort in Kent if you’re

Coming in by train this lovely bus stop will be the first site you’ll see just behind the bus stop is the brutalist residential block Arlington House the gray building dominates the skyline and whether you like it or not it’s gray two listed so it’s staying like many Seaside towns in the

UK Margate is long past its Heyday it went into decline in the late 20th century but attempts are being made to revitalize it Margate plays heavy on its Nostalgia but it’s been a long time since the days of Chaz and Dave and Rodney and delboy Dreamland theme park was opened in 1880

Then closed in 2003 and reopened after a public campaign in 2013 when the town was revitalized now the place is thriving in summer but the back streets around it didn’t look quite so alluring apart from the bit of dog’s mess Dreamland is decent I quite like it other parts of the town and

Especially along the seafront going towards cliftonville are best described as neglected and run down I kind of like The Bleak atmosphere though and some of the graffiti is actually pretty decent it’s kind of sad to see the state of the Lio these days apart from this original Art Deco Mosaic there isn’t too much left of It just an empty and uneven concrete space overlooking the sea likewise the Winter Gardens originally opened in 1911 and once hos in the Beatles has been line derel since 20121 and the co pandemic on the whole Margate is pretty clean apart from the odd bag flapping around in the Bushes the signs of this bar indicated that it was no stranger to trouble Margate does have an issue with homelessness these tend are directly across from the seafront I can’t imagine how cold that must get at night the irony being the huge building next door which is completely Empty back in town now and I do like the Old Clock Tower and I have to say the sandy beach at margay is especially pleasant but there is one problem with the beach and that problem is the smell of the seaweed I can’t emphasize enough how bad this

Smells it was like 10,000 rotten eggs have been dredged ashore it was a windy day so there was no escape from the seaweed stench these folk are on a mystery tour I don’t know what they must have made of it they took one whiff of the seafront and quickly

Dashed across the road to the old Kemp Market Margate has a creative and Arty area this is the Turner art gallery that was opened in 201 as part of margate’s revitalization efforts next up is the Oldtown which is fairly small but pretty nice independent shops art galleries and of course pubs some Victorian buildings even some

Medieval ones most impressively of all the Juda house there’s also a small Museum but they don’t allow filming so I gave it a Miss although the old town of Margate is very pleasant you still have to watch your step even in the other parts of town they have some interes in independent

Shops and some closed down ones quite a few closed down ones overall the Town Center was dated nothing to get excited about but it was clean and it was all Right the sea front is a bit run Down along the front is you usual assortment of amusement arcades fish and chip shops and a large weather spoons Mar gets a bad rrap but I don’t think it’s too bad sure it’s a bit rough but it’s got tradition it’s got history it’s got nice beaches there are worst places in Ken

Let’s hop on a train and go and find them next up we have Graves end sitting on the banks of the temps between Southeast London and Medway even the name Graves end sounds ominous first impressions as you step off the train aren’t great on one side you have

This miserable multi-story car park on the other side a closed down Pub the council building is like something from the former Soviet Union let’s have a look around the town center see if it’s any Better the St George’s shopping center does look incredibly dated but but it does contain some interesting shops like this board game shop P Mass shop and this traditional Sweet Shop the Town Center has its fair share of boarded up shops and it was weird to see a job center in the High Street these leather seats were charging a pound to sit down for 5 minutes what do you get for your pound a comy seat massage waitress service someone please enlighten me in the comments next I checked out the Heritage quarter I was quite surprised to see the first three shops of Starbucks Costa and

Primark along the Heritage quarter the entire buildings were missing covered up by Boards with pretty decent Graffiti the B market was pretty much closed on my visit so I can’t really comment M on the produce There there’s some kind of sketchy Alleyways and bit of rubbish lying around in a Heritage quarter but it’s nice to see a couple of genuinely vintage shops St George’s Church is somewhat surprisingly the final resting place of Princess poker haunters the Native American Christian Princess another grav Zen claim to fame is the world’s oldest surviving iron Pier which provides transport to Tilbury over the water in Essex this red ship here is lv21 LV standing for light vessel and this is used as an narts and performance venue just by the river you can find

This recently built statue of Queen Elizabeth II unfortunately it’s been built facing what will eventually be a multi-story car Park unfortunately greyen does have a problem with litter as you can see in this what would be a nice public Garden and there’s plenty of this around Too there was even a bicycle tire in a tree so what do people in great end do for fun well this might give us some indication nitrous oxide and bottles of Beer like everywhere there’s good and there’s bad in Graves end and then there’s well there’s really Bad one place I do really like is the 18th century new Tav Fort artillery Fort set in a Leisure Park next to the River from some angles it’s still looks like you’re in the former Soviet Union what really sets Graves end apart for me though and stops it being higher

On the list is the seek Temple the Siri Guru nanak daa gwara easy for you to say this is largest gwara in Europe and one of the largest outside of India it was opened in 2010 at a cost of 12 million unfortunately I couldn’t film inside but

I promise you the inside was just as impressive as the outside back in the town center and the clock tower is also very impressive chain about to boarded up shops next to It so overall Graves end is a bit rough around the edges but it does have its good points as well on to our next base it’s back to the seaside now as we head down to DOA DOA is the closest town on Mainland Britain to Continental Europe for many visitors DOA will be

Their first sight of the UK be they legitimate tourists or illegal immigrants there are rumors circulating that upon arrival in Britain refugees and Asylum Seekers take one look at DOA pack their bags and head Home it’s not terrible in the Town Center they do have some nice historic buildings but most places next to Barbers or Kebab shops or Pizza Pronto in the Market Square I was intrigued to see what looked like a boot Fair without the boots Market Square is

The main Square in DOA The Market Square kitchen even got mention in the Charles Dickens novel David Copperfield nowadays the square is a pale imitation of its former self the B convenience store is currently closed which isn’t very convenient something else that was inconveniently closed was the Roman painted house an

1800 year old hotel for travelers Crossing English Channel though the sure has history but what of the future well there is none according to this graffi Market Square is home to the freeo visit DOA Museum no not that building this building do museum has some interesting exhibits right from Roman times to the

Days of Cross channnel swimming and hovercraft most impressive of all is the Bronze Age boat 3,500 year old boats found under the streets of do in 1992 let’s go check out the seafront vi this dodgy Subway this boats Well we’re greeted by Queen Elizabeth II James Bond and some Cricket player It’s hard to say how good or bad a seafront is in Winter I’m sure it’s not usually this quiet the sea front architecture isn’t massively exciting and a lot of work’s being done it’s good to see doa’s military Heritage recognized in the form of these monuments not quite sure why they’re

Placed in front of these blocks are flats Though between the Center and the Sea front of these heavily traffic roads not a particularly pleasant experience for pedestrians I found this old building outside the Town Center it looks like maybe it was a church or something couldn’t find any information on it and passes by didn’t seem to know what it was

Either sadly do car was closed during winter but we did get some nice views across the channel this is the river that gives do its name name the aply named River da overall do isn’t that bad I mean its Town Center is pretty depressing but I

Have been here in summer and it doesn’t look like this in summer it looks like this the countryside the White Cliffs the castle and the history around over are all to be commended just avoid the town center and you’ll be all right now I bet some of you were wondering when

The Medway towns would make an appearance well here we are in chattam the land of the ch have here’s our first view of the High Street 99p stores actually seized operation in 2016 but here they are lion derel still in 2024 I was quite intrigued to see a

Primark next to a betting shop next to another Primark In fairness chattam does have some nice buildings like this Old Post Office that’s now a weather Spoons the Pentagon is the first shopping center I’ve seen with an open air Barbers sadly not the first one I’ve seen with a rape shop

Back on High Street and it’s a pretty depressing scene apparently huge Investments being made in chattam but it’s not evident anywhere that I could See this muda house looks really nice in the Town Center until you zoom out it seems like salvation has come too late for this street The three towers can be viewed from anywhere in Medway and if you thought the Town Center was bad the back streets really aren’t any better chattam has few tourist attractions but one of them is the brook pumping station which was closed a popular pasttime in chattam seems to

Be drinking stellar artoa and chucking your empty tins in a bush chattam is a proud Naval Town up here on the Hills you have this fantastic Naval Memorial just don’t look left into the town even from up here the town looks depressing fortunately from up here in the Hills there are some more

Interesting things to see Fort Amherst is the largest aonika Fort built in England some of these cannons are actually fired on Sundays some say they should use real life ammunition obliterate the whole of chattam and start [Applause] again in the the words of Lord kitchen himself let’s keep calm and get the hell out of chattam town center I was admiring this old building wondering what it was in front of these Flats when all of a sudden speeding police cars were becoming a regular accurence now one

Impressive part of chattam is the historic dockyard I was just filming the building when all of a sudden now obviously I can’t comment on whether this is a regular currence or not but on this particular day I saw more than 10 speeding police cars with their sirens On this is a historic dockyard which is genuinely an interesting attraction what I especially like is they still do ship building and ship repairs here the chatter Marina outside of town is a much more pleasant shopping experience than a town center perhaps that’s the reason the

Town Center is dying out in the first place however you don’t have to look too hard for the omnipresent piles of Rubbish speaking of which and this is right next to the park which has actual bins you can Use sadly there’s not much good I can say about chattam only that it’s not in my opinion the worst town in Kent for the worst town you really don’t have to go too far being a lifelong supporter of Gillingham football club I really didn’t want to make Gillingham my worst town on

This list but I was left with no choice jham toown Center is tired to say the least the shops and cafes at least the ones that are open are pretty basic with most people sensibly choosing to shop in nearby Hempstead Valley or Blue Water shopping centers or chattam there are

Literally bags of rubbish just piled up in the center of town walking through the town of Gillingham even just just coming from chattam is pretty Depressing and the closer you get to the train station the worse it seems to Be interestingly however it’s actually outside of the Town Center that jham gets really bad there is rubbish everywhere now I get that jham is a poor place but this is just plain czy this England flag flapping in a window was a good metaphor for jham itself tattered pass its best and in

Urgent need of either repair or complete replacement another good metaphor is jham football club’s temporary stand built over 20 years ago it was only ever meant to be temporary but it’s been left like a mess for so long but people can’t remember what it was supposed to be or

What it was before they say it’s Grim up North but when football fans from towns like Olden row scun Thor or Grimsby visit Gillingham that stereotype is blown right out of the water the area around the ground is particularly unpleasant if you look into The Gardens of these properties you’ll find nothing

But rubbish piled up waiting for a bin man that’s never going to Come the residential areas were depressing me I decided to head down to the self-styled cadell Medway this is the Strand Leisure Park the Waterfront here I’m sure looks much better in the Sun but the views out to the eyet Grain on a gray day don’t Inspire that much hope

Add a good old River Medway sludge seaweed and shopping Trolleys it’s not only dogs mess that you have to watch out for in jham the Pavements are so narrow if anyone else is walking in the opposite direction you’re walking in a Road I’m sorry jenningh I love your football club I don’t love your town so what do you guys think do you agree with my top five worst towns in Kent do you think I was too harsh or too soft on any of the towns do you think I

Put them in the right order let me know in the comments thank you very much for watching I’ll see you again soon

  1. omg margate looks so depressing :/ sad to see the towns decline like that. Never been to Gravesend but god! Britain can do depressing towns so well i think lol So grey and bleak in winter especially, not been to Dover either i dont think. The cliffs are the best bit lol the graffiti in chatam with the guy and the cone lol definitely unique with the open air barber. Not heard of Gillingham but loving the series, its crazy to see so many towns like this, wish this country would stop building new flats people cant afford and fix the places we already have

  2. Yikes. Each place was strangely unique. I would be a bit disturbed by the speeding police cars everywhere. The grafitti in that first place was oddly picturesque at times. Such a shame to see these places in such states. 😢 Hopefully they can be revitalized.

  3. Thanks for sharing Matt. It can be sad to see how these have gone downhill over time. We have seaside towns and attractions that got destroyed or abandoned but now there's a lot of revitalization efforts to repair them.

  4. Hi Matt
Well, I am not liberty to say/comment since I have never lived or visited the UK.
You have the courage to have your own opinion and express it regarding topics.
I would think you had pondered and might have the second thoughts about your judgement before you published it.
There are many towns on the planet like on your list. The ignominy of being listed?
Thank you for being an advocate and bringing the awareness of the city's issues, I may say.
Hopefully your film made an auspicious beginning. Well done…I guess this vid is you mentioned before..

  5. Well constructed, Matt. The Sussex video and this Kent one show some southern towns are just as grim as those in the north and west, covered by the likes of Wandering Turnip and Wendall. It's depressing to think the UK is unlikely to ever have the funds to regenerate these towns. If I were you, I'd move to Málaga. 😁

  6. The graffiti really was pretty decent in Gravesend. Wait a minute- Pocahontas is seriously buried in England? I had no idea. I actually had to rewind that part three times to make sure I heard you correctly.
We have a Chatham about an hour away from me. It’s actually a nice place. My aunt from England lived there for many years.
I guess these top worst videos are doing pretty well. It’s nice to see that the US isn’t alone with its towns and cities going downhill. 👍

  7. Hello from your friends in Naples, Florida. Very interesting, indeed! Too bad to see some of them so run down. Great tour. Thank you for sharing with us, have a great week 👍💯

  8. A bit ironic how bleak these towns look, when Kent is known for being the "Garden of England" – the number of closed shops are striking, things seem to be getting worse. On the note of attractions in Chatham, there used to be Charles Dickens museum which I visited on a primary school trip, suffice to say I'm not surprised it's not open anymore. The Pocahontas statue has really thrown me – absolutely had no idea she even visited Kent, let alone being buried there! Gillingham really could do with a bit of a makeover…

  9. born in Margate in 1990 , left as a teenager to join the royal marines . my motivation for completing training was the fear of returning back to margate if i had failed . margate was dangerous at night , falling apart , and most high street shops closed down . nothing to do as kid apart from avoiding gangs . also a lot of poverty … 14 years later im leaving the marines next month , and will be moving abroad to start a new life

  10. Note to self: NEVER visit Gillingham!! Jeez-o Matt, I thought some of Scotland's towns were bad …but Gillingham 😲Happy to see Margate has improved since my last visit. Sadly the litter, dog shit, dilapidated buildings and under-investment in your five towns are a national problem which shows no sign of improving as Britain's decline continues 😒 You'll be glad to get away in March and I wouldn't blame you for staying abroad if you find your Shangri-La. All the best mate, Ian and Meg 🙋‍♂🐶

  11. I grew up in north London in the 70s and 80s and a lot of the areas were really dirty and run down but from the 90s onwards they have been completely transformed as the poor moved out and the wealthy moved in. Those suburbs are very attractive areas to live now. I always wondered were all the low income people went and I guess it was to these hideous satellite towns dotted around outside of London. Out of sight, out of mind.

  12. Fascinating… and a bit depressing. Can't help wondering if this is how the country is now, because my own hometown is just like these places. A great film Matt… but I'm going to take a break by watching your Peak District travels now.
