Not sure what’s going on here. Replaced the chains on 3 bikes a while ago – 8spd, 9spd and 11spd as all were showing as worn with my chain wear tool. Checked the new chains out of interest once I’d put them on, and they were also showing as worn. Oh well, I thought, my chain wear tool is really cheap so maybe I should upgrade. Just got myself a Park Tool CC-2 and checked the chain on our trainer bike (old road bike I’ve stuck on our Zwift Hub). Chain was worn, replaced it. But even with the Park CC-2 the brand new KMC 8spd chain is showing as .50 worn straight out of the box. What’s going on here?

You missing the part on the handle that says “New Chain: .25-.50”? Just checked mine to confirm it says exactly that.
This type of tool has no way of eliminating roller play and therefore will always show new chains as worn. Use it to measure change, not absolute values.
Replace this chain checker.
The pins are very fragile and it works only out of the box.
If the tool is not in a protected case or if the tool is dropped…(happened to me) it will forever be inaccurate.
