So this just happened on my boring fairly flat commute home. The frame just failed without warning. The bike is about five years old. Kinda terrifying really. I’ve never heard of this happening but then I’m no bike nerd. Is this a thing that happens? My partner has a similar model bike from the same manufacturer and I’m worried they’re bike might fail and cause an accident. I’m really gutted, I loved this bike with it’s drive belt rather than chain, and internal gears. It was low maintainence until today!

That isn’t a maintenance issue either. I’m glad you’re okay, and imo that’s not a timeframe where you should expect an alu frame to break.
That’s scary, I’m glad you still have all your teeth and that sharp tube didn’t puncture you somewhere. Was this bike new when you got it? If so did you ever crash it? Jump it? Any other crazy thing on it? That’s a pretty bad to just fail so catastrophicly without some sort of trauma to the frame. Would say a warranty issue but at 5 years it’s probably out of date. The good news, if you have a bike collective near you, you could probably find a useable frame and transfer all the parts. They also have volunteers to assist with things you may need help with.
Holy moly – glad nothing bad happened to you.
Well, aluminium is known for catastrophic failure, and the only frame that ever gave in on me was aluminium – but the **downtube**? Had you asked me before seeing that photo I would have said that’s not even possible.
Really interested to see if someone more knowledgeable can come up with an idea what happened.
