You will need a cassette tool (splined but that goes in the middle of the cassette) and a chain whip (to keep the freehub from spinning when you turn counter clockwise). The tools will probably cost you more money than the bike shop will charge just to remove the cassette.

Given your scenario I would see what the shop charges to replace spokes. It isn’t really a repair I would recommend for a beginner.

  2. I use a Rockshox topcap/cassette tool with a ratchet and a Pedro’s Vise Whip.

  3. So aside from this repair, you should be using your large chainring (on the crankset) more. This shows that you are spending like 80% of your time in the smallest cogs, which is going to make the cassette and chain wear really fast. The larger the cog/chainring you ride, the slower everything will wear

  4. Are you lugging along in the hardest gear all the time? Spin faster and use your gears.
