Hello,
I’m getting a deal on a a [12 speed Ultegra 11-30 cassette](https://bike.shimano.com/en-EU/product/component/ultegra-r8100/CS-R8101-12.html). I was wondering how (if at all) will it work with my otherwise 11 speed groupset (105 R7000 series).
Specifically:
1. Freehub body: I’ve [these wheels](https://www.merlincycles.com/en-us/dt-swiss-er-1600-spline-32-disc-road-wheelset-700c-112361.html). It has a DT Swiss hub. I can’t tell what the freehub body is because I don’t have a cassette plier to pull it out. But it has a 105 R7000 cassette installed, so I’m assuming it is Hyperglide compatible. Does this mean a 12speed HG+ cassette can be installed on it?
2. Rear derailleur: I have 105 RD-R7000 (short cage) installed. Can the same be used for 12 speed?
3. Chain: Same question, I’ve an 11 speed chain. Do they work with 12 speed cassette or I need a new one?
4. Shifter: I understand that my 11 speed shifter has well 11 clicks. Is there a problem that I configure it to not shift to the smallest cog. So basically shift from largest cog to 2nd smallest one. I’ll eventually upgrade to a 12speed shifter.
Thanks for your help!

It’s not just the number of clicks, it’s the distance between them. It’ll never index properly.
Nothing would work except maybe the freehub. Can you get a deal in the rest of the 12 speed stuff? Because you would definitely need it if you want to upgrade.
This will never work, the chain for starters is different on 12 speed
No this will not work. For a 12 speed casette, you will need a 12 speed rear derailleur, a 12 speed shifter, and a 12 speed chain. You’re basically looking at rebuilding the drive train and groupset at this point
over all, it can install on 11s FH, and the RD is compatible with 11 or 12s, but if you use 11s shifter on 12s cassette, it will has lots of jump cogs and can’t shifting very well. And 12s mech 105 doesn’t have rim groupset, if you want to upgrade.
if you want to upgrade, you just need a pair of 12s STI and any kind of hydraulic brake suit to your bike frame. don’t need to upgrade full groupset. FD and RD is compatible.
1. 11s HG L size freehub fitts for 12s shimano Road bike cassette..
2. RD is the compatible from 4700 to 7/8000 to 7100 to 11/12s grx. short cage can climb 11-30.
3. it works. just works. can shift up and shift down, maybe not 100%, 90% or 95% works fine.
4. just upgrade, if you can. and if you are stick with 12s cassette, upgrade ASAP. but r7100 doesn’t have rim cable brake groupset, only hydraulic piston.
5. I have 12s groupset and it can climb on 11s cassette, lots of jumping and skiping cog, and needs multi-click to shift while on the middle ring cassette.
you know only shifter and cassette has real ‘speed’, the amount of gear of RD is controlled by shifter.
