**ONE:** I’m probably going to follow the route outlined here:

[https://www.bikeexpress.com.tw/2023/the-classic-9-day-cycling-around-taiwan-along-cycling-route-no-1-or-alternative-routes/](https://www.bikeexpress.com.tw/2023/the-classic-9-day-cycling-around-taiwan-along-cycling-route-no-1-or-alternative-routes/)

But day 6 and thereafter seem daunting to me in terms of the elevation. 1500m is a big day for me.

Do you have any recommended halfway stops? Or are there enough motels along the way that I can just stop by one when I’m tired?

6) Pingtung to Taitung 112k, 2600m

7) Taitung to Hualien 112k, 976m

8) Hualien to Yilan 110k, 400m (if taking the train)

9) Xincheng to Yilan ride 82k, 1675m (if not taking the train)

10) Yilan to Taipei 114k, 1500m

**TWO:** How is feeding along the route? When I’m touring in the US, oatmeal is great. Provides plenty of energy and is easy to carry and prepare, even by cold-soaking. Is oatmeal available there? Or should I prepare to power myself off of something else? What?

Thanks!

I just cycled Taiwan while wild camping the whole way. Took some trains up the west coast, but did the entire east down to the tip and a bit in the far south east. My best suggestion would be to not skip the entire route from Hualien to Yilan. Some of it is REAL sketchy, but taking trains past those places to do the enjoyable parts is 100% worth it. Someone posted a blog about which parts to skip that’s pretty easy to find with a quick reddit search. Enjoy it out there! I had a wonderful time and the food was fantastic

  2. You might want to consider accommodation around Dawu if you want to shorten the day. Stayed in a nice AirBnb there. Don’t recall the climbing to be all that challenging in that area. Roads are good and gradients very gradual. North of Hualien there are a number of tunnels that are single lane in each direction and no shoulder. There are also trucks and buses that use those tunnels. It’s potentially quite dangerous. I would take the train to Yilan.
