Keeps bolts from backing out. You don’t need them
Shimano has a very interesting history with the idea that normal forces on 6-bolt rotor bolts might cause them to back out.
It’s why they have these on all their 6b rotors, it’s why they used to specify doing that insane thing with the looped wires to prevent loosening (few ever did this but but check out the 2001 STI Guide etc if you want to experience the crazy), and it’s probably part of why they developed centerlock.
Basically it doesn’t matter unless your use case is who the hell knows what they think causes the bolts to loosen regardless of proper torque. Throw the pronged washers away, hit your 6nm, and it should be fine. The problem is Shimano gets other engineering things right every once in a while, so maybe they’re right and your bike will explode and you’ll die.
Use locktite instead
Hey, I have these washers, it takes a nanosecond to put them on and it does not change anything for the worse… Can I get rid of them?
Just put the on and be done with it!
