I think a can of hairspray or deodorant would also help a bit but most of the time it is the ‘surprise’ effect that will get you. They are armed, prepared while you will never see it comming most of the times.
Just behind my front door I have a can of deodorant that I can pickup easily. The trick is to sometimes use it to keep fresh in mind that it is there to use. And no I properly shower etc but sometimes a nice squirt in the air, not on my clothes, won’t harm.
In the country I live in pepperspray and about anything else that would be useful for self defence is forbidden and will be used against you in court.

This is another reminder to keep your eyes open all of the time. I hope this gentleman is ok!
