I got this bike second hand and I really like it apart from the fact that when I pedal hard in certain gears it close BANG 💥 like a gunshot. This happened last week where I was in last gear tryna get as much speed as I could, I was standing on the bike shifting my weight from one side of the bike to the other as each pedal went up and down, applying as much force as possible and all of a sudden BANG and my foot slipped off the pedal and went straight into the concrete wall with all my force. 3 toes broken. This also happens on other gears and even when I don’t apply that much force. By the pictures, do I need a new cassette? The chain looks alright. I also had some other questions like the derailleur… would a short cage (I’m assuming it’s a short cage) derailleur come stock on a 10 speed bike? Has the previous owner changed the derailleur?

RD-M820 is officially compatible with up to 11-36 cassettes with a single chainring.
some cogs show deformation on the teeth. the cassette and the chain should be replaced. depending on wear you might also have to replace the chainring.
I assume you don’t need any lecturing about riding a bike as hard as possible that might have something wrong with it?
I don’t think you’ve got the correct derailleur hanger for your frame.
Have you recently replaced the hanger? Or is this a second hand bike? What bike model/ year is it if you know?
If you’ve not got the correct hanger this means the derailleur isn’t in the correct position relative to your cogs. So you shifting will be sloppy (if at all working).

That’s a brand new chain on an obviously old cassette too…
That cassette looks awful. Needs a new one and possibly a new chain.
It’s got every possible thing wrong. Wrong derailleur hanger for that frame, wrong cassette for that derailleur, wrong chain length, and wrong cable length. The previous owner totally bodged everything if you bought it like this.
How is your chainring in the front?
People often replace cassette and chain but forget about chainring. I’ve seen bikes with chainrings that get so worn they slip.
That cassette looks super worn. You should replace it, and in the future, replace your chain before it damages your cassette like this.
I’m willing to bet your cassette is toast. I can see some sharkfinning, which means it was probably worn many many miles ago

Wow, the previous owner didn’t like his bike. The cable routing is messed up. The housing is way short and the cable lacks end cap. How big is the largest cog on that cassette? To me it looks like it’s too big for the derailleur and someone tried to fix it by installing a longer, but not fitting, mech hanger. Also, I like short chains but that chain looks way too short. I don’t know about the cassette, I can’t tell for sure.
I would honestly get the correct mech hanger and then a derailleur that is intended for the cassette you wanna use. That will mean you also need a new chain, and while I was at it I would probably replace the cassette at the same time rather than two months later. Throw in a few extra bucks for a nice cable and a bit of housing. Nice thing is, once you replaced that it will be a nice set up.
That cassette is destroyed. Which indicates that the chain is likely to be worn out, too. Plus, the derailleur isn’t compatible with a cassette that large. Breaking bones sucks. Hope you heal up soon.
