Hello and welcome back to the channel! In this weeks video I am taking the training wheels off. No more Max distance, or max heart rate. Just some excitement finally! I went for a max effort up box hill, 4 hours deep into the ride, interesting results… have a good one!

Do I talk about something I wasn’t going to talk about actually kind of an [Applause] [Applause] announcement good morning welcome to another you guested Ultra cycling related video if you watched any previous ones thanks a lot for coming back and if this is your first visit I’m Andy I’m ultra
Cyclist on the south coast of the UK the videos I make are about Ultra cycling training and Adventures I’m currently in the thick of my training for the Transcontinental race a 4,000k race from France to Turkey so if you have endurance goals of your own subscribe follow along there sure
There be something in there for you and if not hopefully you teach me something on the car with today I want to have a bit of fun if you’ve been watching for a little while you’ll know that I put a limit on my heart rate and the length of my rides through the
Winter try to keep my heart rate at or below 150 beats per minute and my rides out or below 100 miles but today going to go off plan I’ve got about 120 mi from Portsmouth Northbound to Box Hill and no more limiting the heart rate I’m just
Going to push on all the way there and back have a bit of Fun He Just passed through Petersfield if you from around this way it’s a really well- hidden mural you may not know that the tour to France in 94 started and finished in Portsmouth it’s quite rare that it starts and finishes in the same city but it came through a Petersfield and that’s what
The mural shows handily now though they’ve put electricity box right in the way of the toor of France Park so you probably never know climbing now the beard out of breath oh that was stage one started and finished in Portsmouth not the whole Tour what of you that’s the first sizeable climb done up to a place called Rake in the South down still about halfway through the South Downs so from here on it’s all descending and then towards sari Hills always stop here for a Brea cuz it’s absolutely gorgeous He Not too far from BX hill now so about a 50 Mi warm up for the climb and about 3,000 ft of climbing already roughly so not the freshest this is a part of a longer route I do in the summer longer rout is about 160 mil and goes to boxill leth Hill
Brighton by ditchling Beacon if you know that it’s absolutely Savage I never really fancy that Today I’ve just passed through dking so very very close to the climb now maybe like half a mile segment starts as soon as you hit zigzag Road it’s a road to zigzags so let’s do it okay here we are on the world famous Box Hill Climb Up zigzag Road in sry
Just south of London this is the climb you’ll know from zift and was also used in the 2012 London Summer Olympics I won’t show the entire climb it took me about 8 minutes to get to the top that’s about 30 seconds slower than my own pi
And about twice as long as the k for the climb reasonably happy with the climb given that my Mason is so much heavier than my tarmac and I’m a few kilos heavier at the moment than I was when I got that PR but a bit about expectation
Versus reality here when I planned this ride and was talking about it on the way up I really expected to Smash Up the client I don’t follow power numbers during the ride I can’t see them actually so putting this overlay on afterwards it’s now Tuesday and looking
At the numbers they’re lower than I expected but then I had been riding for 4 hours by this point had one little stop on the way off and that was it so roll straight into the climate I pretty much exclusively use heart rate for pacing during longer rides if you watch
This and you’re planning to come and ride Box Hill maybe you can use the power data to judge your own effort later and as always said I’ll show the good and the bad on this channel so even if they’re not numers I’ve really wanted and I’m not really happy with put them
Up anyway so as of recording this it’s Tuesday now mostly recovered still feel it a tiny little bit in my legs the ride was on Saturday normally I’d be recovered by now it’s quite a hard ride actually there some good training so I’ll leave this with you for a few more
Minutes I won’t show the whole thing but if anybody wants to see the whole climb I’ve got the whole file let me know in the comments if you’re interested anyway anyway back to the Ride Just nothing Mak You I Back Never do I it’s not bad if VI was it definitely worth the climb up and about halfway around and suddenly really aware of a bit of a headwind on the way back hopefully it’s just where I’m up a bit higher but let’s see had a pretty good brownie and a flat
White and bumped into a guy who just flew past me at the climb called Tom if you do watch this Tom good to meet you mate you’re flying up there time to get home now 60 MI about 4 hours probably to get back and hopefully no rain All Right finally all of the busiest of the Su roads really like coming out this way to Box Hill but the further you get into Su the closer to London the more snug up the roads tend to get a bit more inhospitable should say that I’m back onto the nice
Roads I’m probably stating the obvious a little bit my legs hurt now about 40 mil or so to get home but a good exercise in being knackered and having a push on anyway but it was really good fun so no regrets on this Quiet Road it’s probably a good time
Now to talk about something I wasn’t going to talk about actually I was in two minds kind of an announcement more of a thank you I started this channel a few months ago I’ve mentioned that probably every single video it’s quite new to me and I started it
Because I was recording stuff on my phone for family and stuff and without realizing it quite enjoyed it so bought a camera for PVP and here I am now making videos for YouTube or trying the main reason I did this to begin with was for the outlet really something
To talk to on Long rides on my own all day and I like it but the secondary goal is to try to build it up maybe get some sort of Partnerships some sort of help with the cost cuz Ultra it’s not cheap an unexpected third benefit it’s kind of
The community aspect it’s a kind of a hardcore of a few well a few Fair few people seem to comment on every video so I’m meeting new people they’re suggesting things for me and we’re all kind of helping each other which I really like I didn’t expect
That that’s kind of the reason I was in two minds about even about even bringing this up I see posts from other people other YouTubers when they hit Benchmark numbers and subscribers and kind of can come off a bit like that’s just a number uh so I don’t really want that but
Yesterday my channel ticked past a thousand subscribers and obviously that’s the partnership Benchmark kind of the goal for most people is to hit a th000 so thanks honestly really surprised there’s a thousand people out there interested in watching what I’m making I’ll carry on just doing what I enjoy filming along
The way I enjoy it hopefully you stick along for the ride bit longer I thought I’d at least wait until after the climb if you watching until now then you probably subscribe cried or at least enjoying or at least enjoying the video quite a few people click off after short amount of time
So thank you it’s much Climbing I’m on all the same roads now back that I was on this morning and it’s looking like might run out of daylight yeah less than ideal really but let’s see how I go luckily following the train line all the way back so I’ll roll into Petersfield see how much daylight there
Is at that point whether I can navigate the lanes safely or not if not I’ll get the train Well well well it’s roll through Petersfield and I think we’re going to make it thund is about to go down soon but it is well lit soon so should be fine bit wetter than I’d like though but come a time in the summer I’ll be praying for this weather so suck it
Up this was the last clip I recorded for some reason my camera didn’t work so I got back it was a little dark but I made all the way through I did have lights had three lights the front light I use just blinks for daytime so isn’t really
Suitable for dark Lanes but I made it back fine thanks again for watching I appreciate it as always have a really good week I’ll see you on the next one

Good effort! I'm sure our paths will cross at some point, possibly without realising! 🙂
Yep, I remember that TdF stage. I was going on a motorcycle trip to France that day with my son as pillion so we managed to catch them around Overton/Whitchurch, then again in Portsmouth for the finish, before boarding the ferry along with what seemed to be the whole caravan. It was very noisy on board with a late night disco blasting away, so if any riders were on board too, it's amazing that they managed the 270 km stage the next day. Congrats on the 1000 subs – quality will out
Awesome ride
Well done and congrats on crossing over 1,000 subs. I was just about to type a comment "I see you've crossed over 1,000 subs" and then you mentioned it. Best of luck on acquiring sponsorship.
Another great video. I am happy and proud to be one of those 1,000+ subscribers!
Congrats dude, well deserved.
Awesome video!
No surprise you have hit the 1k mark Andy. I find your videos have a nice relaxed no pretence about them so are really easy and interesting to watch. Keep up the great work 👍. Strange you saying about the TDfF, I was working in Leeds a few years back and came across the TDF flag stones in the pavement and suddenly remembered it also started at Leeds one year.
My lord, 50 miles is enough for me… amazing
Andy, congratulations! And well deserved. I’ve been watching for quite a while now and really look forward to your videos after the weekend – this one was a little later than usual. My advice, turn advertising on as soon as you are able. I did that on my channel and although you don’t get a lot, it’s money you can use to help your channel. All the best, I’ll be watching and hope to bump into you at some point!
Don't be surprised by the 1k subscribers Andy. Your channel has fantastic content and is a channel for real cyclists. Keep it up bro. Regards, James, Isle of Man.
… that was just a matter of time for You to hit the 1000`s;- there will be even more…Congrats on that and on another nice ride! Funny though I wondered after your last video how You gonna prepare for elevation on the big race coming up, and at least You mention "hill" this time, but seriously, what do have in mind and/or what and how are You training for these endless mountains on TC…planning a training camp, something like that maybe? Because, my region (Baltic Sea Germany) is pretty much the same as your`s,… coastal, windy and hilly, but no mountains at all…
I love these videos! I would like to see the whole file. I recognize this hill from GCN videos. Keep up the great work!
Great video! What width handlebars are you using?
Getting serious Andy ! 😊
I'm going for a 6 Hour constant pressure on the spin bike next week – did a 5 Hour last week….for me this is better than shorter interval training.
Gave the Club ride a rest Sunday as I injured my calf muscle on the spin bike last week – 4.5 hrs in and for some odd reason [must of been tired] tried to freewheel on a fixed hub !! 😆…..all ok now !
Andy – what lube do you use on your chain ?
Thanks Andy – always looking out for the next video and happy when it appears. Congratulations on the subscriber numbers.
Hi Andy, as always I enjoy these rides. I cycled (with all my camping gear). The North Downs Way a couple of years ago. I rode up box Hill early one morning and it was nice chatting to some of the fast people wizzing past ! I was in impressed with them, and some where impressed with me and all my gear. Good vibes, I really enjoyed it. Look forward to seeing you progress. Atb Grant 👍.
Congrats on the 1k.. am approaching 4k.. but its taking like 5 years lol I must be doing something really wrong
What a great ride , I was surprised to see your heart rate above 170bpm at the very start of boxhill climb , thats very impressive to keep that high , I haven't done that for while . I ride a hardtail up the back of boxhill on a bridleway to the top and have been using tgat as my fitness gauge for 16yrs now 😅 my best time on my 26er was 8min 30sec 😅, that was prob about 10yrs ago now, different bike now thats slower 😮. But I did it last week and watchig your heart rate thats where I am in the last 200m of climb, no way I could do that from the bottom at the moment 😅 your training is looking great for the intercontinental
That was great Andy! Congratulations on hitting the 1,000 mark, but not at all surprising. I'm enjoying coming along for the ride as you fly through the countryside. Enjoyed the Box Hill climb with the data overlays – would be interesting to see the overlays on other kinds of sections.
Another belter Andy 👌
Love the content and keep producing it!
Good lad!
Congratulations on breaking the 1,000. I am not at all surprised. I’ve commented previously that I enjoy your videos. I like the relaxed delivery and lack of b.s! I look forward, as always to the next one. Keep up the good work.
England and rain, Amsterdam and more rain.

Was interested to hear you dont have power displayed. I guess you prefer to go on feel? I like the checking with power even on gravel just to know I'm pacing OK. My four favourite fields are 3sPower, Power Zone, HR Zone and WindField – wind direction never a surprise (not always a good thing when you know you're straight into it at 20 knots, like lately)! From what I hear only a fraction subscribe, so you've probably got 5-10x more people watching 🙂 Nice work on the graphics too! Keep up the good work.
Congratulations Andy on the 1k. Watched all your content, full of great advise on endurance. Can't wait for spring and summer to do those longer rides 🚲🚲🚲
Thanks for your tips to become ultra endurance rider. I’m currently training for may first 200km ride. Cheers mate for your next ultra endurance race. Watching from Philippines
I enjoyed that Andy, as I cycle around Box Hill quite often (and I started my channel for the same reasons as you!) Congrats on the 1k subs, I'm still on the way there!
hey Andy, well done on the 1k subs. i'm a recent subscriber, having found you looking for PBP vids. been thru the old ones and really enjoyed them. "something to talk to" – totally get that. i'm sure we all lok a bit mental talking and singing away to ourselves on a solo ride. it;d be good to see what gear you use and how you manage filming etc as you're riding. always wondered if it was a bit of a faff juggling cameras whilst just trying to crack on. keep it up
My endurance rides are about 40 miles these days 🤣🤣🤣
Hey Andy, this is Tom from the top of Box! Was a pleasure to meet you and good luck with the Trans Continental. I watched a few of your other videos as well – inspirational content, keep it up mate. Thanks for the shout-out, I'm convinced you've sped up the footage a bit though!
