And we were a very close family I’d say it was hard work but I think as a parent once your children are older you realize how easy it is when they’re little and you know that they’re they’re safe in bed Joselyn barara is Luke’s cousin Luke and I were inseparable when we were

Thursday the 11th of May Luke arrives on his motorbike at Alex’s mother’s house in Woodbridge near ipswitch we’re just outside my mom’s house the back of my mom’s house where Luke used to park his motorbike just up there and then instead of instead of going round on New Street he’d climb all

Breaks the news to her mom I remember her saying mom I think something may have happened to Luke Alex said he didn’t go back to his and his motorbik was still where Luke had left it I remember remember feeling like a a panic I knew there was something wrong but I

Didn’t quite know I had no idea to the extent of how wrong things were Alex is wrestling with not having reported Luke missing at an earlier stage I think you always think what could I have done to make a difference but I don’t think Nikki would have

Nikki and she said was Luke at work and I said no I then started calling Luke’s friends and no one had seen him since the Thursday night I called the hospital but there was no no young men um of his age or anything in hospital I I remember just thinking

However you have to approach it from the Viewpoint that one day it may become a murder inquiry Luke always let me know where he was so him going missing was completely out of character the most important thing is it’s this out of character when you hear that phrase you really are your senses

Are drawn to a why is it out of character why is it that this person has gone missing could Luke have simply gone off by himself he’s done it before aged 18 he went to France for a couple of days yes I do remember that and I think yes

Um he was back so quick we hadn’t realized he gone no and he’d left me a letter telling me that he was um going to find himself but there’s a big difference to last time he vanished he phoned home every day he was like speaking to Lea and then he said oh can

I speak to mom he said can I come home I said of course you can this time there’s no phone calls he hadn’t been in touch with his mom he hadn’t been in touch with his sister he hadn’t been in touch with uh you know sort of his close

Friends police need to build a detailed picture of Luke’s life at the time he went missing and one word crops up repeatedly drugs it’s a shock to Nikki who till now has never spoken about her son and drugs I I was aware that Luke um smoked cannabis and when Luke first went missing there was a lot of rumors and information about Luke um being involved in drugs on a much bigger scale it turns out Luke has used drugs since his mid teens Rob Turner is his friend from

School he was always a smart lad but he was Stone most of the time at school he just wanted to have a good time most of the time to see his mates have a beer have a joint and just chill out and him and his friends used to get

Stoned in a caravan down the end of his garden which I don’t think that Nikki really knew exactly what was going on down there I think she was giving him his space as a teenage boy but as we got a little bit older it seemed to

Get worth please learn that age 16 Luke switched from just using to dealing he was used to like help his friends out with weed and stuff if he had it so if you got like an a of weed off him he’d say just like sort me out

When you can and he’d never be in a mad rush to get the money off you he’ moved into the the role of a dealer um between friends uh and then just before he disappeared that that dealing became uh more and more prevalent to the point where he dealt more Stairs grahe Lloyd became Luke’s driver on trips to buy and sell drugs I began driving around with Luke basically when we started smoking and then he started getting a little bit into the the co and stuff like that and then we’d go and get stoned and then we

I would drive him to go and get it he’d go back to mine and he he would knock a few deals up just felt like um as if you were going to pick up your groceries it just felt like a normal daily Drive I could see that things

Were changing with Luke I will never forget when I got on the bus to go into to Woodbridge um and he got on and it wasn’t Luke he was so High it wasn’t him he was sort of laughing in a really high pitched way at something I had no

Idea what was going on it just it scared me it really scared me because I didn’t know who that person was Luke dropped out of a college course and flopped about at home I I don’t know if there was something from depression I don’t know I really don’t know what was happening to

Him I was just um so frustrated that I felt like he was wasting wasting his time yeah just wasting his life you know but in early 2006 he appeared to turn a corner finally he got the job in Al yeah with Susie as soon as I offered him the job

He was bouncing around um you know clearly Overjoyed the over job was the Turning Point really wasn’t totally totally he loved that yeah he really did on the surface he’s on the up but Susie sees signs he’s under stress Luke was very changeable one day he’d be very

Effess and happy and upbeat and full of it and bubbly and another day he’d be low and jumpy and maybe a bit afraid of his shadow the problem for Luke is there are many rival drug dealers in ipswitch and the surrounding villagers it which it was quite a drug

Fested drug fueled Place back then I lived on a little counil State just outside Woodbridge and I knew five drug dealers on that one council state and I’m sure there’s only probably about 50 houses on the whole estate everybody sees Woodbridge and thinks it’s the nicest place in the

World because of the houses and stuff but there’s a lot of nasty people around here that if they don’t like you they’ll get you and it was spoken about that Luke was undercutting people and stepping on people’s toes and it wasn’t very well appreciated by the other

People what do you think I don’t know then you’ve got to look at has he come to some harm or disappeared as a result of the competition between individuals for turf or territory in 2006 drug Barons are sending dealers by train to towns like ipswitch to grab the drug trade from

Rivals like Luke a system soon to be known as county lines this is Portland Road this is where I used to work back then Tasha was a street prostitute she experienced firsthand countyline dealers musling in on the local drugs trade I was a bad smackhead bang out

Getting out of my face every day all day all my money every single penny used to go on heroin and crack cocaine drug dealers come to this town from all over Liverpool London Birmingham you know they come over here come into people’s houses I’ve had a personal experience of

People taking over my flat they’re coming say they’re going to pay me this and they’ only give me like a shot one shot in the morning one shot at night take over my yard smash my yard up people would [ __ ] in shoe boxes in the bath smear [ __ ] in that all over your

House literally feces and then try and like own you tell you what you can and can’t do so did Luke get in their way when see other people from our own town like our own people selling the drugs they ha it police need to build a detailed picture of exactly what happened the

Night Luke went missing and any involvement with drugs coming up are there signs Luke could have gone off radar and still be alive the leaving of the PHS and the leaving of the wallet it struck me as quite a an odd thing for somebody like Luke or has he been abducted and

Murdered drug ditch you could ow someone money and like you could be walking down the street and no other law you could be bundled in a car and disappeared Thurday 11th of May 2006 19-year-old Luke Durban travels to his workplace in alook up the coast from ipswitch Susie medland owns the fruit

Shop he was incredibly excited to be at work I will he was full of beans he was um bubbly and excited and he was really looking forward to going out with his friends and they had a big night planned his friend Alex faroh at the time working with Gordon Ramsey in London

Traveled back to ipswitch for the night out Luke seemed in a very good place he seemed very happy certainly he was very happy that I was coming back and we were going to spend the night out Together Alex calls by the shop and they visit the beach at 5:00 p.m. Luke leaves work leaving behind 200 he left all of his wages and he had intended to take them with him and I think he was so excited to go that he just forgot them he left it in the

Tin first Luke goes home his mom Nikki finds him with his sister Alicia in the garden both the kids were laughing Lots it was it was just like if you can capture a lovely happy family moment that that would have been it for me you

Know he went to go and you know did all the usual have a lovely night um love you all all the usual stuff we say and then I just remember saying to him don’t drink and drive and I had no idea of the horrors that were going to

Unfold and it certainly wasn’t about electric driveing next Luke rides his bike to Woodbridge dumps it there and is picked up by a friend with a car who takes him to a drug deal the inquiry it became apparent to us that Luke had been given lifts by various friends uh but one in

Particular uh at various times to going and byy drugs Luke goes back for his bike and Parks it behind Alex’s house the initial plan is for Luke Alex and another friend Zach to drink at various pubs in Woodbridge at about 75 Vicky Irwin now a BBC Radio reporter sees Luke with Zach

At the king’s head so I’d come out to meet some girlfriends we would just sat actually right here um I would sat on this side they would sat on the other side they were of rolling a cigarette and being quite gregarious and chatty and we were all just sat there thinking

Hold on a second I mean we’re all in our early 30s late 20s you look about 12 cuz he looked quite young what on Earth are you doing trying to chat us up and then I remember very distinctly that there was a phone call in that conversation he was talking about um

Drugs we decided we’d get a bag of Coke in um Luke got a lift from a friend uh was maybe gone for half an hour or so and then came back the boys head to Alex’s house to take cocaine then come up with a new plan to

Go clubbing an nip switch Luke calls greme Lloyd asking him to drive them there the original Arrangement was that I was going to take everybody out he was going to buy me drinks of Coca-Cola all night and then I would bring everybody home again at the end of

The night sou and safe and sound Luke is to stay the night at Alex’s when they get back at the last minute they decide to stand down Graham and use a taxi instead and I got a I think it was a text message off him saying you you

Haven’t going to take us you just need to come pick us up I’ll get in contact with you later on Luke left his phone his wallet his keys and things like that at mine because he was worried he’d lose things when he went out the leaving of

The phones and the leaving of the wallet struck me as quite an odd thing for somebody like Luke who was who was reliant on his phones really for his day-to-day contact with friends and Associates you could theorize that it would also be a good way to ensure that

No one could trace you if you wanted to run away however at that time we had to go with what we were being told by people and that was that he didn’t want to lose them at 11:30 Luke Alex and Zach take a taxi to ipswitch they’re captured on

CCTV as they arrive at Cardinal Park entertainment complex in the police investigation which follows police asked Nikki to pick the boys out uh so then you can see Luke and Zach they’re actually going to this taxi um and Alex is in the taxi he’s had enough and wants to go

Home I’ve been working very very hard in London at the time um s of up to 100 hours and felt pretty exhausted when I was in the tax so he makes the right decision goes home that left Zach and Luke they’re just walking out of the Cardinal

Park I think they sort of play fighting in places it’s 12:07 a.m. they’re heading to a nightclub called zest this is zest it’s boarded up now because a young man was um in 2006 was tragically shot and killed here um but it was a lively nightclub in ipswitch at

That time Luke and Zach arrived here at 1210 and they were turned away because they were eating but came back 20 minutes later Luke is without his wallet so Zach has to pay for their entry and buy drinks and Zach was at the bar and he turned around and Luke had gone missing

And that was the last meaningful connection he had with his friends that evening at 1:20 a.m. Zach leaves having failed to find Luke we have found some witnesses two girls actually who say they saw Luke around 1 1:30 in the morning and they were talking to him so

He was definitely still in the club at that time Graham is still waiting for his summons to come and pick up Luke and Zach say yes so I just sat up waiting all night and I never never had a phone call text message or anything off him

And then it got to about half 1 in the morning so that’s when I then tried to ring him and I couldn’t get through to his phone the railway station is close to the nightclub there’s no CCTV but at 2 a.m. Luke is seen by a witness

Here Luke is found on the platform by a member of Staff trying to get a train back to Woodbridge the member of Staff spoke to him and said look I’m sorry there is no train until later on in the morning I’m going to have to ask you to

Leave and escorted Luke out through a gap in the railings that was there at the time out onto ranley Road however a few minutes later Luke is back on the platform and is again approached by the same member of staff so again he was escorted from the

Railway station and the last the member of Staff saw he walked out onto ranley Road 310 a.m. Luke is a mile away at Hawk Express Cab office and Luke’s trying to find a way home and he hasn’t got any money and he spends quite a long time trying to charm this taxi

Driver so he’s clearly trying to get back uh but it’s declined so we then track him to what became the final piece of CCTV footage 400 a.m. Lucas on a zebra Crossing on dog’s head Street So this Upp crossing here is where Luke was last captured on CCTV at 4:00 in the morning um you can just just see him on the CCTV going towards um the bus station in the first couple of years of Luke um going missing I used to come

Down here regularly and just just look at all the CCTV cameras um I just could not believe that Luke was never picked up again on camera And you know it’s very clear from that that he’s actually walking into the bus station um but it’s what happened to him then did he come out the bus station you know nobody knows Luke may have been looking for a bus but there are none at that time to

Woodbridge at 4:09 a.m. one last crucial image is captured on CCTV further down where we can see the van um crossing the road is the zebra Crossing where Luke at 400 a.m. is seen Crossing into the bus station and above me you can see a CCTV camera on that

Camera we caught an image of a white or silver Volvo 440 Car which was driving in our world place out of the Town it is possible that that it may have picked Luke up this is a live inquiry so police can say little despite an intensive search the car has never been

Found we believe it was registered in a false name and a false address it is potentially connected um to um the drugs fraternity so why might someone involved in drug dealing have picked luk up at 4 in the morning so was pretty apparent that he owed money to people about 6

Months before he went missing his movements into Woodbridge were a lot less and he was a bit more secretive it seemed like he was a bit more intimidated of coming out when John brockelbank reviewed the case in 2010 he found evidence confirming Luke owed money over

Drugs having a debt within you know so the network that we will now call County lines um has consequences Tasha fears what that could mean for Luke right drug debt you could owe someone money and like you could be walking down the street and no other

Arew you could be bundled in a car and disappeared you could never be seen again or you can be bundled in a car taken to a house tortured beaten the [ __ ] out of he’s probably got himself maybe like in debt with drugs and they’ve gone and took him off somewhere

To make him work the money off the drugs I’ve known a few people to be taken off and worked as a drug de they’ll take you up to London Manchester Birmingham wherever are there were a number of connections that we were examining some of whom were in ipswitch and had

Connections to London particularly around the Brixton Area take the left cabby Brixton gangs have an especially violent reputation former gang member nikila Whitaker now a youth worker was jailed over drugs she’s taking us on a tour of her home territory yeah we used to call this part of brickton Baghdad you kind of got to

Have your gun with you at all times the brickton scene in 2006 drug selling was crazy so I was a part of a county lons operation I was very much involved in kidnapping kidnapping people and making people feel the repercussions of things in the light of understanding that some people are not

People to be messed around with so if a local dealer from brixton’s coming in to take over the town the local dealer within that town if they haven’t got no clout then basically that person’s getting taken off of the radar could be anything from being kidnapped it could be anything from ending up

Selling for that gang there’s been many kidnappers that end up in murders coming up as as police investigate possible murder there are multiple claims Luke has been spotted in London the lad P baseball cap down over his head and ran off as if trying to hide or get away and the possibility

Luke has been killed takes its toll on Nikki I just started digging the ground of my hands thinking cuz it it just didn’t look flat and I think I was verging like a fine line of sanity and Insanity at that point I just thought if I come at the time that Luke

Disappeared maybe I could see who was around Nikki deran and Chris leot are retracing an early morning Journey around ipswitch first made by Chris in 2006 yeah it was it was an amazing but probably quite dangerous thing that you did coming out and on your own a so-called anniversary check same

Time 4:00 a.m. same day of the week as Nikki’s son Luke vanished a check Nikki believes police didn’t make when Chris first told me that she had um gone into whp switch herself I was so cross um not at her but at the police for not doing the their job

Properly I didn’t feel as relations between Nikki and the original investigators have been strain but Ian Addison who led the early inquiry disputes are claim uh pedestrians were accounted for and spoken to we traced people who’d been using cash points in the area at the time and they were

Spoken to anniversary checks were carried out in the areas uh of where we knew Luke had been I’ve always looked at this inquiry as if it was my own son that was missing and I totally understand how sometimes Nikki has felt frustrated but the national Center for policing Excellence

Inspected the inquiry three times and could not suggest a single thing that could be done that we hadn’t done with no clear leads police cast their net wide they search local roads in case Luke tried to walk home one of the considerations was whether he’d been

Struck by a vehicle that had failed to stop we asked our Collision investigators how far a body would be thrown and they told us it was some 75 M which was a theoretical maximum which to give you some idea is beyond that oak tree over there 36 miles of roadside are searched

To that depth but Luke isn’t found attention turns to his phones left at Alex’s it’s 2006 and the early generation there was no internet history to research or anything like that but there were extensive text messages extensive call logs uh phone books uh as well within the phones and everybody

Mentioned in any way within those phones was contacted and spoken to by the inquiry team they draw a blank but there are potential sightings of Luke after he went missing one in particular by his friend Rob Turner in Woodbridge we all saw Luke a good between two days and a week after he

Went missing we all came down here um and we always used to line our cars up here there was always a feud between us and IP Swit so the ipswitch boys would come down here and we’d fight with them and we’d go up to whip switch and fight with them

So if a car ever came down we’d always really peer in and see who was about in cars he came from the road down the bottom it was an E36 BMW like a 318 style 3 door black with uh spoiler on the back and it had AC snitzer wheels on

It and that was Luke in the car defin everybody said it was definitely him I only saw Luke in the back I didn’t see who was in the passenger seat or driving John brockelbank investigated the claim that one was really interesting to us and we’ve done a lot of work on it

However there were I’m told nine people also with him in that area and none of them can recall that event there are other sightings of Luke in a car with one or two black men another man says he saw Luke at a stock car Stadium near Ipswich the day he

Disappeared but others present saw nothing and there’s a report Luke’s seen at White Chapel in London and myself in the inquiry team traveled down there and spent um a couple of days walking around talking to homeless people Street drinkers drug users living on the streets but frustrating we weren’t able to confirm

One way or the other who the person was 10 months after The Disappearance a girl who knew Luke from school says she’s seen him outside the old witch theater in London the actions of the lad that was seen outside the old witch theater suggested that he didn’t want to be

Found for some reason pulled his baseball cap down over his head and ran off uh as if trying to hide or get away there wasn’t anything to corroborate that sighting but it was of interest to me because of the connection to London and Brixton in particular and to the

Drug dealers that may have been holding Luke against his will no sightings check out but a further link to brickton emerges Luke’s name and date of birth were used in a fraan application for credit to people who live in Brixton those people were arrested we were unable to prove any link to Luke’s

Disappearance but we found the use of his name to be um obviously quite significant Tasha at the time heavily involved in drugs believes there’s no hope Luke could still be in Brixton it’s been 13 years well if he had been taken to Brion he he would have been back by now

Wouldn’t he he’s more than lik he been killed sorry to say but as much as it hard I mean probably has in suff the fresh inquiry has focused on people connected to the drug trade locally and with links to London at last a potential break through in June of 201 12 we arrested

Two people in connection with The Disappearance of Luke and actually in connection with the murder of Luke again because this is a live inquiry John brockel bank is guarded in the details he can reveal we searched uh a number of addresses and we sealed off um a number

Of areas both in I switchwood bridge and elsewhere a garden is dug up we brought in specialist search teams we also brought in um police dogs who were specially trained in sniffing out human remains I was so angry that someone could have you know murdered my

Child and they were lying in this garden and oh it was just it turned out that what the dogs had picked up it was an old fish pond and they believe it was the smell of you know dead fish the people arrested are released without charge in 2014 please search

Woodland in Ord near Ipswich where a bone has been found thought to be human sent to America it turns out to be a deer bone the stress on Nikki is taking its toll I can remember stopping my car and I started thinking that L was in in some ground and I can remember

I was with a friend and I just started digging the ground of my hands thinking because it it just didn’t look flat um and I think I think it was like a verge of I was verging like a fine line of sanity and Insanity at that point um I can’t even imagine how

Traumatic it was for my friend who was observing me on my hands and knees digging for my son’s Remains there is one more possibility Research indicates many young men who go missing in a town center suffer the same fate statistically 75% of them end up in water so clearly the Waterfront area of RPS which was of a major interest to us please search River and docks in

Theory Luke could have been swept down the estery across the North Sea Nikki regularly walks through ipswitch Marina on her way to work I’d always walk really close to the edge of the water because I I just thought I wanted to be the person who found Luke if he was in the Water Luke’s DNA was sent via Interpol to the European database where periodically we had it checked against any unidentified bodies that were found on that side of the North Sea in particular Holland I tell you what it’s not very warm is it hi there we go to spr L lovely 13
