Hello!

My bike is running as a 3×8 speed. I broke the stock RD of my bike (a Shimano Tourney TY300) and the RD hanger. I had them replaced with a new RD hanger and a new Shimano Tourney TX800. I also converted it to a 1x setup with a 40t chain ring. Overall, new RD, new crankset, new chain. Visually, the gear shifts are smooth. However, the chain grinds (?) the cassette when I’m pedalling on the lower gears or on the 8th gear. The only usable gear is the 7th. I don’t know if this is necessary but I replaced the cassette from a thread-type a year ago. I also encountered the same problem but it was then fixed by our bike mechanic.

With all of these in mind, how can I solve this issue? Thank you for all of your inputs!

  1. The culprit may be the new crank, with the chain line possibly off from what the middle ring in 3x would have had.

Or, the RD may not be optimally adjusted. Is your problem on the biggest, or smallest cog? (Talking ‘lower’ or ‘8th’ can be misleading, based on point of view, experience, etc.)
