So [this](https://imgur.com/a/ZLw76Ax) happened Sunday. Which sucks, cause it means I’ll be using the metro for the rest of the year. But it’s good, because (1) now I got a beater to learn bike repair/maintenance on, and (2) I got a reason to save up for a nice, new bike that can handle my ambitions of getting into bike touring/camping.

For reference, I bike around Montreal as my main mode of transportation. Commuting, groceries, etc. And I’m also a fairly big boy at 6’1″ 255lbs, and planning on getting bigger. That, on top of all those cool racks and bags I see people put on their bikes, means I need something that can hold a lot of weight, without ending up like this last bike.

My use case will be commuting around town for work, chores, and fun; and pushing out to other towns, further and further away. I’d like to visit family and friends in Ottawa, Quebec City, Toronto, NYC, and Philadelphia semi-regularly, while saving on the train fare! Hence the title of this post – probably I’ll just bounce between Ottawa and QC for the first few months, til I get some good legs and experience under my belt, and then push out to those other, further cities by the time September comes around. Assuming I get this dream bike you’ll recommend me in January or so.

Which brings me to another thing – winter riding. Tips, tricks, bike recommendations cause of it – lemme have it all.

Finally, budget. I’m not rich, but put it this way – I’m gonna be working a lot of extra hours to be able to afford a nice new bike anyway. So a $10K bike? Maybe not. But if you tell me I got a dream of a workhorse that I can get for say, $4.5K or less? You got my attention, for sure. Especially if it’s *way* less.

  1. Buddy why don’t you just spend like $200 on a used beater bike to commute with for now?
