  1. So I bought a used hybrid bike a few weeks ago – A Bianchi C Sport which is in decent condition but came modified by the previous owner.

    Back – 11/34, 10 Speed Tiagra

Front – 1×44 Custom Chain Ring on a Square bottom bracket

Shifters – 2. 3×10 – Back Shifter is tiagra, other just says “Shimano V Brake”

I’m very new to biking and it was a bit of an impulse buy so I didn’t know what I was buying except its a light and fast (for me) bike and I can bike with my young kids.

Now that I know a bit more about how bikes work, the previous seller probably had a fancier crankset on which was removed before he sold it off and there’s now this weird mountain bike 1x on.

The problem is when shifting to the bigger cogs at a speed over 15mph the chain comes off, and I’m told that is a chain ring issue (i.e. its only a 1x and not Narrow Wide, and that its 44 Teeth).

Having obsessively researched how all this works, I have two choices before me.

    1. **NEW** Tiagra 2x (50/34) – 175 Crank with a Tiagra FD and bottom bracket installation
    2. **USED** 105 2x (50/34) – 170 Crank with a choice between an Ultegra or 105 FD. Will have to buy bottom bracket and clamps if needed new.

Both are the same price (roughly). The used parts come from a private seller so no warranty. Pictures sent by seller attached. LBS will install it if I provide the parts.

The **NEW** route, come with 6 months local warranty of the Bike shop and whatever Shimano provides for parts on top.

What would experienced people on this thread do ?

  2. Id want to see every tooth on a used crank. Cranks dont wear evenly. Teeth can break off. Personally id avoid a used crank without seeing it in person or having very detailed photos and a buyer friendly sales platform.
