Indicator chain was had lost spring tension, so it wouldn’t pull back into the axle.
It’s been about 20 years since I disassembled a SA 3-speed but I managed and everything looked ok. However the axle key does not stick out either side of the axle, so it just slides through the clutch and the spring is not compressed. There’s no evidence of anything being broken (plus the parts are made from tool steel), but I recall that the key is supposed to be a bit longer than the axle is wide, so that it pulls the clutch.
What an I missing?
