Oi! You tourists & travellers. Welcome to Lille. Lille is the most beautiful city of Flanders, even though it’s located in northern France. My wife and I went to Lille by train, and I brought my inline skates with me.
As far as I’m concerned, rollerblading is the best way to explore a city. It’s fast, convenient, exciting and healthy. And if you don’t know how to rollerblade, just follow me, I’ll take you along. Let’s lace up and race through the city. But we warned. It’s gonna get wild. So hold tight.
Let’s go! When you step out of the Lille Flandres railway station, you get an almost Parisian feel. But soon enough, Lille’s Flemish heritage pops into view. Like its beautiful belfry. Skating through a centuries-old stock exchange, why not? A must-visit street, is the Rue Esquermoise. Let the authentic bakeries and tea rooms seduce you.
Certainly have a look at Meert. We’re now in the old heart of the city, Vieux Lille. If you want to get lost in cosy medieval streets, well, knock yourself out! This is the old Ghent Gate, named after my own hometown. A medieval landscape with some modern signs of poverty.
The Ghent Street is the place to be for traditional French cuisine. We enjoyed our dinner at La Vieille France very much. In the evening, all these terraces are packed. The beauty of Old Lille are all the little alleys you stumble upon.
But let’s have a look at the newer part of town. Have you ever seen water so green in the heart of a city that wasn’t Chicago? Near the old citadel, you can have a drink on one the boat bars. There is a neat attraction park for families with young children.
It’s got a big playground and a mini rollercoaster. And a log ride to get all wet. Unfortunately, the old citadel itself is off limits for tourists like us. But luckily, a beautiful park runs all around it. The zoo is great if you enjoy looking at animals locked up in small cages.
The more recent part of Lille feels typically French with its broad avenues and sycamore trees. The wide pavement in asphalt is awesome for rollerbladers. If you’re into artistic stuff, certainly pay a visit to the magnificent Palace of Fine Arts. I’m mostly interested in the stairs in front of the building.
If you’re more into street art, you’re lucky: it’s everywhere. I’m looking for a big hole in the ground, but it’s not this one. Here it is: the most interesting canvas for any street artist. The big bowl of Lille. An urban masterpiece. It’s sweet to skate some modern art.
I’m sorry, as an inline skater I have to pay a visit to Decathlon’s very own skatepark. My apologies for this indulgence. It comes with a price. These bike lanes are a dream to cruise. I’m speeding through the most modern part of Lille.
In every corner of its stunning futuristic face, there are signs of old-fashioned homelessness. Tales of human waste. The Transmetropolitan nightmare. Shiny office buildings can’t hide the pain of a broken city. The megalomania of business district Euralille looks like a victory, but it’s a defeat.
Yet, it’s precisely the combination of medieval charm and postindustrial wasteland that makes Lille so intriguing. This is not an open-air museum, but a city that lives and breathes. For me, Lille is the capital of Flanders, even though it’s in France and everyone speaks French.
It’s good to know it’s always just a train ride away. Thanks for watching. And have a look at my main channel as well.

Nice, just found your new channel. I've not been to Lille yet, but i love Paris, Annecy and Lyon. They would be amazing cities to skate.
