I just replaced my chain as it was getting stretched, hoping that I could spare the expense of buying a cassette. I tested the new chain and it slipped under load on my most commonly used gears. I am planning on replacing the cassette and not riding as it currently is to avoid any damage to the new chain.
My question is this: When should I replace my chain so that I don’t have to buy a new cassette each time? I tried to do that here, but it seems like I waited a bit too long.

There are so many posts about when to replace a chain on this sub. Using the search feature will get you a bunch of info.
A checker that ignores roller wear is important for accurate measurement.
It depends on the manufacturer, but:
5-to-10-speed chains: replace chain at or just before 0.75%
11-to-12-speed chains: replace at or just before 0.5%
Check with manufacturer for specific replacement instructions that may differ
Honestly it doesn’t make a difference eventually you will always have to replace the cassette the chain the front gears the jockywheels. Every part of the drive train will wear.
Use affordable drivetrain components like sram basic stuff Shimano 9 speed etc. The drive train doesn’t do much to make your bike better or faster if it was expensive it might just shift better or weight less but the true speed and ride quality is gained at the frame and wheel level. Invest in the wheels and the frame the most.
Let the stretched out chain run until it turns into dust it doesnt matter if you are sitting on good mavic rimsets the bike will push.
I bet you if you didnt replace the chain you wouldn’t have had skipping problems with the new chain. Sometimes a worn thing runs smoother than if you try to replace a certain component at a time.
Like in the case of the drive train.
