So my birthday is coming up, and my wife offered to get me some tools for bike maintenance. We are moving, and I have the chance to have a dedicated spot for bike maintenance in the new garage.
I already have a bike stand, and some random tools like chain checkers, cassette change tool, a few Allen wrench sets, kinda the basic stuff to do week to week maintenance, but it’s all pretty disorganized and not bike dedicated. I e also got some bike wash/cleaning stuff like rags buckets and brushes, but nothing like an ultrasonic cleaner or anything. I’ve seen shadow boards at bike shops that look pretty sweet but I know all of those tools can get pricey fast.
What would you put together for a beginner setup to keep my mountain and road bikes running smoothly, and be able to do bigger jobs like crank pulling/full tear down? I’m hoping to do almost everything myself except maybe fork maintenance.

Oh boy! That’s quite a birthday present…
My advice:
Full set metric Allen wrenches
Full set metric box-and-end wrenches
Pliers (regular + needle nose)
Screw drivers (straight + Phillips, fine and coarse tip)
Chain tool
Cassette remover and chain whip
Bottom bracket remover
Crank puller
A crescent wrench large enough to fit your cassette and bottom bracket removers
Dykes/cable cutters
Tire levers, tire jack
A good floor pump
Degreaser
Lube
Grease
Rags
In general, I have found that paying more $ for better quality tools is well worth it in the long run.
a torque wrench, a track pump, a decent set of picks and don’t be suckered into the blue stuff, there are much better tools for the money. ask wifey for an abbey HAG and use it like once a year 😂
