  1. Time for the daily ‘is my chainring worn’ post. I know it’s best to check if it’s worn by installing a new chain to see if it skips. However, I’d like to buy all my parts at once so I’m thinking of also ordering a new chainring to go along with the new chain/cassette. But would gladly avoid doing this, since a new chainring is another 100 euros. So, would you replace it based on this picture?

EDIT: Thanks for the advice, will buy a new one and replace shortly!

  2. My take is to assess it based on problems. Is it hard shifting, does it skip, excessive noise, excessive chain wear, do you rely on it for your primary source of transportation? If it’s not broke or you don’t need a high level of reliability, don’t replace it.

  3. Hell yes check your chain wear. I bet a brand new chain on that won’t last more than 1200 km even with high end lubricant.

  4. Both are worn. Get a new chain, then lay it on the chainrings. If you can move the chain without the rings moving then they are definitely worn.

yes get a new big chain ring along with a new chain and cassette. You ride in the big ring most of the time. you could get away with not replacing the big chain ring but that would not be wise. You will be glad you did replace it with no regrets. Brite side is the small chain ring is good for now.

  6. The teeth on the large one are almost like triangles. Personally speaking that’s my trigger to change the ring.

In any case the chain must be slipping on that big ring? Time to replace I think.

  7. I’d recommend replacing both. Unless you like crappy shifting and blaming everyone else for it. Trouble is, finding replacement rings is a challenge.

Here’s the devil’s advocate opinion. Hollowtech chainrings are expensive and chains are not. If your chain isn’t skipping then you might be better off with the extra chain wear vs replacing chainrings more often. I’d be tempted to ride until it truly dies.

  9. Yes, I would. Or give it little more wear and use it as a circle saw. Those lumber prices are crazy.

  10. Those shimano big rings are expensive as fuck and aftermarket ones don’t shift nearly as well. I will always try a new chain and hope it doesn’t skip teeth before replacing a chainring
