Just folded it up on the train and this has come off. Only had the bike since Dec and done appprox 10 commutes of 30 mins cycling in total per day.
Any ideas what it is and how I can fix it? Not sure I should cycle home from the train station now…

This is your hub gear indicator chain. Without it you won’t be able to shift your gears in the hub. A new one is cheap – https://www.condorcycles.com/products/brompton-hub-gear-indicator-chain-for-sturmey-archer-alloy-shell?variant=48920628298
I had to replace mine. It’s hard to find the correct position for switching gears smoothly again. It was trail and error.
Try the left shifter in 1st gear. It should give you enough slack in the cable to reattach the indicator rod. Once it’s reattached, you need to adjust its length. You do this by putting it in second gear, again with the right shifter, then turn the adjuster at the end of the little chain a until you can see the stepped end of the rod part aligned with the axle. You can see this by looking through the circular hole in the wheel nut. The left shifter is not attached to this part so you don’t need to touch that.
What kind of conditions are you riding in that your indicator chain has already rusted?
If you have a wet ride, bang your bike tires-first into the ground to shake off excess water before you fold up.
You don’t need that, throw it away 🤣🤣🤣
