This happened recently to me. I was about to ride home from work and when I was about to start pedaling all of a sudden it felt like front derailleur malfunctioned and my chain was jammed. On closer inspection I saw that bigger chain ring broke off from main body and when I shifted it jammed in the derailleur. Day before that I was feeling typical derailleur misalignment symptoms, but didn’t payed closer attention to it immediately. Bike is new and bought from a bikeshop online (it’s trek and shop is official dealer) about 9 months ago. I’m gonna deliver it to a closer bikeshop that is official trek dealer and I would like to have second opinion before I speak to them. Is this something that could be covered by warranty? And what could have caused it?

I would be very surprised if it wasn’t covered by warranty – it’s less than a year old, chainrings should *not* break like that, and Shimano are in the midst of a massive product recall. It’s got nothing to do with Trek, but I assume the shop is a Shimano dealer too, in which case they should be able to help with the warranty claim
