The Monte Generoso Rack Railway allows reaching the mountain peak in 40 minutes (covering a distance of 9 kilometers) from the SBB station in Capolago. In 1867, the first hotel – Hotel Monte Generoso Bellavista – was opened on the mountain. The first steam locomotive ascended to the summit of Monte Generoso on June 4, 1890, from Capolago.
A notable feature of Monte Generoso is the “Fiore di Pietra” (Stone Flower). Designed by the renowned architect Mario Botta, the Fiore di Pietra was inaugurated in 2017. It stands as an architectural masterpiece harmonizing with the natural environment. The “Stone Flower” houses a restaurant, banquet and seminar rooms, and a large observation platform on its roof.
Mario Botta designed the Fiore di Pietra on Monte Generoso blending traditional construction with modern design. Its distinctive stone walls and clean lines give it a timeless aesthetic. The arrangement of its components resembles the petals of a flower – hence the name “Fiore di Pietra.” Large windows offer visitors magnificent views of the surroundings.
