I pulled off the cassette on my fat tyre mtb to replace the cassette. I assumed (maybe foolishly) that I would be able to pop a shimano replacement on easily. What is this even?
There is a fair bit of play in it anyway so I would like to replace it. Will I have to replace the entire hub?

that is a freewheel that you have partially disassembled. Freewheels are much different then freehubs, so a cassette wont fit on there. you either need to get the rest of the freewheel off and get a new freewheel, or get a new hub or rear wheel.
when you say there was play in it, where do you mean? on the freewheel or in the axel?
