I’m a total beginner looking into becoming a cyclist and want something cheap for now just to get some miles and fitness in before I decide on gravel or road bike. I will be using this for short grocery trips and maybe some coffee shop commuting (nothing more than 2-5miles). I also want to do longer rides (10-20miles tops). Note: I’m looking for something cheap as I do not know if I am moving soon to another state (this will determine if I go road or gravel). I am slowly saving about $2.5k for a bike but I want something now to get around for the next few months.

Yeah it’s a good bike but I would consider going for something newer. You can probably get something from the past 15 years used for about that price.
Newer bikes tend to have integrated brake levers / shifters which will be easier to use than down tube shifters. Plus if you find a frame that can fit wider tires you can upgrade down the road for a comfier ride.

I would look carefully at what kind of shape it is in. At this age unless it has been overhauled several times it could be in poor shape. My first 2nd hand bike seemed fine to me as a newbie when I first looked at it. Soon had some issues and took it into the shop to find out almost everything was wrong with it. Ended up tossing it. Also I can’t see what tires you have, but you want good tires for commuting, something like gator skins so you don’t get a lot of flats. If you plan to ride in all weather that’s another consideration, don’t get slicks. Two new good tires will cost you half the price of this bike.

as a beginner, you will likely find it the geometry uncomfortable (long, low, “racy”) and the gearing too high. you will probably be better off with a newer bike and/or one with a more upright position. good luck!

Id offer them $150 and work from there. Like another user said you can easily find something newer for that price.
This is a solid commuter tho, and perfect for the type of riding youre doing. It is a bit overpriced tho despite the upgrades on it.
