It looks like both versions of the RD-3500 derailleur have a low sprocket max of 32t, so the largest rear cassette you can equip is an 11-32. Based on the front sprocket capacity, it looks like the GS was designed to work with a triple front, so yours is likely the SS version (though I don’t know that for 100% certain).
As far as chains, yes, any 9-speed chain should work. As a note, typically you’re counting both inner and outer links for chain length, so it’s more likely that you have 105 or 106 links than 53.
By size, do you mean cage length? By eye this looks like an SS, but I’m not 100% on that. A version of the second picture which is panned up and to the right may help to identify, my guess is there is either an “SS” or a “GS” stamped just out of frame of that picture on the visible face of that plate.
Any 9 speed chain should fit your bike, however unless you have a really strange bike I really doubt your chain is 53 links long, so you may want to either re-count or just keep your old chain to use as a reference when sizing your new chain
