  1. Rare that it snows here anymore, but we got several inches in January that was packed-down bliss for 3 days which I’ve never experienced before. It stayed below freezing all weekend so it never turned to slop or ice.

Riding the same trails I ride every week was a completely new experience. Chunky trails became flow trails, new lines opened up, and wiping out into the snow just resulted in roaring laughter instead of cursing.

Outside of snow, I still love winter riding because I run hot, trails are mostly empty, and visibility through turns is primo.

  2. As a skier I thought it was dumb until I tried it in Maine where a mediocre snowfall quickly turns to ice. It was extra fun because you are still riding mtb trails with roots and rocks but snow and ice too. I guess you need studded tires most of the time but I didn’t have them when I went. I am less interested in riding a bike on groomed trails at xc ski centers.

  3. If we had groomed fatbike trails this good where I live I’d rip like this but its more of a slog on ungroomed trails that are only a tire width wide. Sketchy. And all other groomed trails are dominated by an elitist nordic ski culture that shuns fatbiking and anything other than skiing. They’ve got agreements with most public land areas to only groom for skiing.

  4. This looks like something really cool and fun that I would be excited to do until I got out on the bike and remember how much I absolutely despise the cold.

  5. Cool if you live somewhere you can get out there enough. I know a bunch of people that bought fat bikes when the fat bike craze hit a number of years ago. I’m sorta glad I never did. The snow just doesn’t stick around like it used to. We get a storm then it warms up and the snow is gone before I can even get out to XC ski or bike.

  6. It’s a no from me. I get a bit twitchy when the trails start getting some leaf cover! I need to see that dirt!!!

  7. I live in NC piedmont area…last time we saw any snow was 2 years ago.

This, however, looks like an absolute blast!

Not having a fat bike in Wisconsin sucks. That will likely be my next bike. Taking off from November through April kills me every year

Rented a fat tire in park city once. That was a lot of fun and a great change from a ski week. I would do it regularly if I lived there.

  10. I bought some ice spiker pros for this winter and have been. Having a blast getting laps jn… Been a strange winter in the bc rocky mountains, I hear some of the trails are dry and ready to ride

  11. It can be fun. Conditions can change every day.

Sometimes you have to build the trails yourself.

  12. I think with enough skill, an ebike, and studded tires, it can be a blast. Sadly, I don’t possess 2 of those three necessities, so I don’t typically do any winter riding (and I own an emtb).

    Sick riding and stay safe!

  13. Thé days are too short. I’m at work during the times that it looks great to far bike in snow. On a crisp, beautiful winter morning, I dream of being out on a fat bike. I would love it, but can’t justify the cost of a good fat bike if I can’t use it fully.
