Tinkering and no one loves his tool shed more than sir David Jon when he’s not on the Telly play it nice and cool son nice and cool you know what I mean he’s busy fixing and restoring everything from vintage motorcycles to Mechanical Marvels you are the chief Tinker aren’t

You joined by his pal Furniture restorer and Craftsman Jay blades this is lot a proper workout you can see it happening quite quickly they’re hitting the road in their very own touring Tool Shed is it still there it’s still there oh yeah on a quest to meet like-minded tinkerers

And it swims in water can you believe it is this hand stitched yes yes it is Sir they’re bringing along trusted experts to help with problematic projects I can never get the thread proper to fly but I’ve managed it to do as well as welcoming passionate hobbyists not straighten my tea that was

And master Crafters to show off their talents and even teach David and Jay a thing or two I wouldn’t mind having a go with it myself look at that it stayed together that’s a proper job after all it’s never too late to learn something new what a lovely machine this has

Turned out to Be spread over the Magnificent 6 and a half th000 acre ragley Hall estate in warsha is the Midlands Air Festival now in its fifth year it attracts 30,000 visitors with a passion for engines and Aviation just the kind of people who look love creativity and precision measure yeah get it right get it

Accurate yeah yeah yeah you got to tape there you are nice one check this is working okay four 4 and 1/2 in you got a pencil sorry yeah there you are hold on four yeah 5 and 1/ half yeah Y Cool all right now I reckon you want to get

That angle right right 45 is it Perfection it is all about perfection that’s that’s good that looks right to me that’s good that’s good I’ll run one more one more done it looks perfect to me what you think can I have one of course you can thank you

Once they’ve brushed the crumbs away David and Jay are hoping to help enthusiasts who’ve hit a snag with their latest project and the first to pop by the shed has a passion for something a little different autometer or mechanical toys a hobby she shares with David oh these are

Something that you may right on your street as well you love this sort of stuff Becky is an addiction counselor from Norfolk who dreams of taking her hobby to the next level while she’s GR how to make hand operated models Becky’s come to the toolshed to learn how to

Make her Creations move more realistically before we get into things I got to see that you got to see this okay all right on good Lord W yeah that’s brilliant so I made this cuz I you know like lots of automaton Birds they just they just this but I wanted

The whole range of you wanted it like proper flat yeah so it it was really quite complicated to make but do this as a hobby right yeah I did one called Marvo the Mystic we copied it from a end of the pier machine and it’s driven by

Uh a motor we had strings but you’ve got wires which is which is much more Superior than ours but uh yeah I think we could let me see this he’s going to get right into this look at him let’s see it’s a little stiff isn’t it that

Yeah but the action is beautiful I mean AB absolutely beautiful and why did you do this why did you make these I love the challenge of it it’s really hard to do yeah when I started this I didn’t know that I could make it so I’m

Actually you know I’m a real beginner at this so this one’s working yeah but the head the head what’s wrong with the head is that I want it to do too many things at the same time I want the eyes to move okay in all directions you can move them

You’re doing it now I am but I want them to move mechanically I know it can be done but I’m no expert but I think we have an expert we got Chris yeah Chris can help us out yeah Chris Chris marget is the master of autometer puppetry and animatronics he’s been enlisted to

Create animatronic characters and puppets for museums theater Productions and even prestigious London department stores such as hars there’s no one better to help Becky upgrade her skills hi hi nice to see you nice to meet you okay here’s this fell uhhuh I want him to be able to move his eyes

Uhhuh in all directions right I want the mouth to move I want the head to be able to this this movement and this movement and this movement okay which makes it very trick he doesn’t want a lot this he no right I think the the best way of

Doing it we’ll we’ll build a platform which will have the motors on we’ll work the motors independently but we’ll put them through a timer a mechanical timer block so that they’ll fire at different times to get I like that’s what I was thinking was it you sure oh yeah yeah

You know I would have done that easy I was just testing him see so yeah you you’re on the right track okay well if I get stuck I know where to go EXA see in no see in not me the festival attracts Aviation lovers of all kinds whether that be Thrill Seekers

Who take to the skies in stunt displays or those watching on in Wonder and our next visitors share this passion for flying machines well who’s moved in Darren and Darren met while working at an airport and now work together to save old planes destined for landfill together with Darren son Oscar they

Transform scrap planes into stunning pieces of art so how come you guys have moved in what are you doing there yeah well we’re up cycling airplanes we think that they deserve to live on when they come to the end of their flying lives so what is it you’re doing then with these

Bits of airplane so we take the large sections of fuselage uh but you can see at the front there and we’ll cut them down into these smaller sections cut the ribs off and all the unnecessary pieces and then we’ll start the polishing process and then we’ll actually refit

The window into the middle there and make it into a clock and all of a sudden all of the sudden part of your airplane has turned into a clock for your house right this is a window seat mhm how’ you know it’s a window SE because there’s a

Window so where’d you get a plane from the airline industry is constantly evolving and aircraft do come to the end of their operational life and at that point when it’s been used up has no more Cycles it’s uh it’s scrapped or it’s repurposed it’s recycled what’s that is

That Oscar is that yours uh yeah I made it from scratch the it’s from a crank crank show from a three-cylinder diesel engine okay you’ve repurposed that out of an engine that would have been thrown away melted down or whatever but made this interesting artifact and it’s got a

Little tiny bit of History meaning that gives it an extra bit of Interest a lot of our clients have that connection we even made a section for a couple who met uh when they first flew together on a particular aircraft romantic fell in love got married have children and

They’ve now got a chunk of the airplan they met on in their house on the wall and we’ve even made some of our customers cry when they you know when they’re actually hanging it on the wall and and they’ve got such good memories of being in the aircraft times they’ve

Had with it so it’s been a it’s been a a nice journey to to where we are today and how did you all get into this you just start chopping up a plane and then you sell it on or polish it up and you sell it on to people I’ve been

Fascinated by Aviation for as long as I can remember my dad was was an engineer I was an air traffic controller and ran the airport in gloss for 25 years yeah and Darren actually came to work for us at the airport and the business all came about completely by accident we had an

Aircraft that the fire crew used to use for training at the airport yeah old derilict aircraft but the propeller spinner was still attached okay and every time I drove past it I thought I must take that off and polish it up and put it in the office it will look lovely

Yeah and then a few years ago I was driving around the Airfield the propeller spinner had gone it disappeared he turned up and my office 3 or 4 days later looking really sheepish thinking he was in trouble with this spinner beautifully polished wow I’m going to say I thought I’d asked all the

Right people if I could take and that’s where it started and having spent 25 years talking to airplanes and answering emails and now actually get to play with them with my hands it’s just fascinating now good on you well you giving you an idea is it yeah listen listen don’t say anything

But we could go down the scrap yard get an old couple of cars yeah take them bits polish them up right and we could get you what we have to do we have to get in a knowledge from these guys of what to do right yeah okay what we’d

Like to do is to see how you polish this up to get this nice Finish Well should we hand you over to Oscar who is our Tak us how this bit of car sorry airplane airplane yeah yeah right the first step is obviously safety got

Specs ah we start off with a an orbital sander and that’s smooth uh yeah and then we we sort of lay our uml I’m watching I’m learning all this I’m learning it all I’m learning it all go down the scrapyard yeah what sort of

Polish is it um me we need to know this not but it’s probably their secret formula yeah it’s a secret formula yeah we’ll have that all right so the look that you’re going for is like a high finish a high gloss finish yeah okay so

We start with this make make sure it’s a low speed so it doesn’t catch sort of keep it close to your body oh that’s coming up yeah comes out nice if You’ like to come over and have a look you can see that the um butes

Yeah the Polish has come off and it’s shiny surface is starting to shine through right so is all to have a go right so this is a soft mop yeah and you’re going very slowly again because you don’t want to drag the surface oh let me do it this

Way you look like a pro there learning it for the best Oscar taught me well what’ you think get pass from me what do you think yeah yeah very yeah brilliant nearly as good as that show it your first day isn’t it it’s my first day thank

You it’s been a pleasure meeting you guys um and thank you for the ideas that you’ve given us thank you I like it I like it you look good in my garden There David and Jay aren’t the only ones buzzing with new ideas Chris is teaching Becky how to motorize her rotometer so that its head will move in a more realistic way the first step is to create a rotating turntable for the skull which will be powered by a

Motor so this first part of the mechanism this turntable uh once it’s attached to the motor we’ll put a couple of bearings on there’s a a couple of steelb bearings ings here which rotate once the turntable part goes on as the motor here rotates it will turn the turntable left and right and

We’re going to mount the head onto this part here so that’s the Turning part which is the first bit that’s that’s really nice that’s great Movement by creating a turntable for the skull this will make it turn smoothly from left to right the first of several head movements that Becky is hoping to

Achieve okay so we’re just going to connect the power supply up low voltage power supply to the motor and if we plug it in we should get aable that’s great so you get a nice smooth movement it’s really quite simple mechanism isn’t it but it works but it works and that’s the beauty

Of these mechanisms they’re all very simple but when you put them together you get quite complicated movements out of them I think I think I can work that out I think I could do that so there we go that’s the first part done he’s on there Moment of Truth here

We go let’s see if he can turn his head there we go can you get a nice gentle and that’s really Sinister I really like that like looking at you that’s really quite creepy ah right how are we getting on we’re going all right that is going to

Be brilliant yeah Beck what have you learned well I have learned quite a lot actually um these mechanisms they’re so simple but that I wouldn’t have dreamed of it a million years so this this particular side to side mechanism and I mean this is exactly what I wanted it because it’s

Quite Sinister looking it is and that’s very slow movement just enhances that and I’m I’m really pleased with that now I’ve seen it seen how you’ve achieved it that you think oh it’s so simple a motor like this you can get off off kind of you know the

Internet six or 7even pounds something like that for a motor uh whatever speed you want I suppose also it’ll be trial and error you can plan as much as you like but until you start actually putting things together and building it you’ve got no idea whether it’s going to work

Or not you just kind hope for the best but we’re we’re on course we’re all right I think listen I’m going to love you and leave you and let you carry on I’ll come back and see you later on it’s looking really good great cool we’ll see you later

Bye warshire is the perfect place to hold an air Festival as it boasts a long history with Aviation David and Jay are heading 30 minutes north to centry the heart of the British aviation industry this is proper nice country site is they’re visiting the Midlands Air Museum to surprise one of the dedicated

Volunteers essential in maintaining and restoring this incredible collection is this the building you reckon yeah this is it definitely okay he should have his plaque on it or something yeah 94 year-old retired aircraft Pitter Gordon devotes almost all of his time to this Museum and he wouldn’t want it any other

Way Gordon there he is we’ve come to meet the main man goodness gracious me sir come and say hello sir nice to meet you and equally to you sir oh thank you I heard you’re the main man here that’s what they say yeah be to my face behind my back I don’t

Know is that your Workshop in there it is indeed so yeah and TI as it is wow L it’s a bit like mine at home this it it’s a bit everything is here everything I need I could turn around and go like so he’s got loads of stuff in it yeah

Anything I’m asked to make or missing in the museum I look at this and I get an inspiration how old are you going I’m 94 you’re 94 yeah and how long you been doing this well let’s say that I joined the Royal Air Force in 1946 so what I

Did I went down the route of an airframe fitter yeah okay fantastic everything I need to know how long you’ve been working I’ve been here 27 years almost so 27 years all of these aircrafts here have my fingerprints in one way or another yeah why do you do it why yeah I

Don’t know anything else it’s a reason to get up in the morning on I go home at night and I have something in my mind and I make a SK can’t wait to get back it’s not what the museum owe me it’s what I owe the museum God bless you on

You given me a reason to live I can’t sit at home I have to be here Gordon has loved Aviation since he grew up in Wartime comentry during the Coventry Blitz in November 1940 Gordon witnessed his home and city destroyed Gordon’s father made sure to teach him the importance of repairing

And making a skill he used help restore this incredible 1950s Victor bomber one 2 three oh oh now we’re cooking on gas yes I like that your left hand panel is the nuclear pel don’t let what you’re saying a nuclear button is there there are nuclear so don’t let there the nuclear

Buttons what are you doing seriously he loves power listen that’s giving him a lot of power this will give him all the power he needs underneath your left hand you see that’s it behind it Bob doors open you saw the red light don’t tell him where the button is to let the bomb

Off it’ll probably eject you yeah press and you have a big green light boom you now gone gone your nuclear bomb I don’t I don’t like the sound of all this it’s sort of terrible techn ology that we have to all did and are still doing to our fellow

Man we they’ve never learned anything have we no we haven’t you’re absolutely right gold so what condition was this like when you first got it it was in an awful condition it had been standing outside for 20 years I spent 3 years of my life in here bringing it back to life

Whilst David and Jay Explore More of Gordon’s projects Enthusiast Becky is learning how to motorize her autometer head expert Chris has shown her how to build a small electric turntable powered by Motors and the final step is for Becky to learn how to attach the head to the

Motors to get the eyes mouth and head to all move so the next stage we have uh is to attach each side of the the head to one of these motors how how do you attach those these are going to push into there and I’m going to have to I think I’m

Going to have to glue these and what the the glue is warming up this little motor here at the back uh this is the one that’s going to control his eyes um and we’ll we’ll fit that on to the eyes here so we’re just going to force the glue into the opening

Here how long have you got oh you’ve got a little while does that I mean that I’ve never used that that glue GL the hot glue is it like really sturdy kind the advantage is that if you really desperately want to get something out

You heat it up again with a a hair dryer it softens the glue and you can pull it out okay that’s interesting so there you go I thought that’s an inside tip an inside tip but if you don’t eat it up it should stop so you should get now an up and down

Movement and the left and right so so the next stage is to wire uh these two Motors into what we’ve already got on the turntable right really it’s as simple as that we’re joining all three motors together now initially um and positive to positive negative to negative you

Just join them all together um and they go back into the connector across the two same across the board yeah so Moment of Truth we’ve wired through three of the motors together uh and we just need to see now whether it’s going to work back at the Midlands Air Museum

David and Jay are meeting with dedicated volunteer Gordon right come on Gordon show us with this machine of yours he might be 94 but he’s still Keen to show off his latest project something that should excite helicopter pilot David this is a German World War II flatner or hummingbird helicopter which

Was once used to spot artillery positions it was built in 1942 and is the only one in the world how did you get hold of this it came to this country I believe in mid 45 okay so we sort of Brits stole yeah we stole it in fact it went to the rdf

Don’t leave your fingerprints on this it went to the RF for evaluation it’s the only one in the world this is the only one in the world yeah so what condition was it like when it came in well all we had was a silver frame everything you

See in silver yeah we took a hold of that everything in green is what we rebuilt what we made and rebuilt so you just had the frame and that was it that was it the frame but what did you do then firstly a drain pipe oh yeah secondly a

Drain pipe that’s a drain pipe yeah and to obtain that I used the interior of a safety helmet is safety helmet yeah yeah but you can sit in this and move all the levers and stuff do yeah yeah thank you let’s have a go there we are I got you right toward

Yes I got a see and that’s where me feet go on there well yes eventually I I suggest that might be a good starting point right and twist there we go and now it’s a long way down now that’s it that’s B on there you are

It is very simple well it’s simple to you it’s probably complicated to me I’ll tell you that now that’s very clever how do I get out of it I got in it right in reverse order you lift yourself up okay I’m getting out of here yeah you get out

Of the way hold on this is quite low if you want to use this in any way shape or form I want to get out serious you want a hand you behave yourself you want can you swing your foot which one right or left now you back up your left I’m

Trying to left right well you’re right thank you there you are there we go there you are he couldn’t work that out for himself while Jay gets himself back to ground level over at the festival there are display teams poised for takeoff among an impressive lineup of over 40

Different aircraft are daring aerobatic display teams like stomp made up of Brave pilots who share a passion for aerobatics these teams volunteer their time to entertain the crowds well stomp formation team is a formation of uh of the airplanes you see behind it so the aircraft is called an

Sv4 stomp St MP based Loosely on the British tiger moth uh but designed to be um more aerobatic more maneuverable our display lasts uh just under 20 minutes some maneuvering and some brakes and then we finish off with a solo aerobatics display for me really

To be able to do this is is just incredible when we’re doing our formation flying you’re looking down at all these people out here so it’s it’s been absolutely brilliant day today safely back on Terra Firma someone else has had a brilliant day too let’s see how they’re getting on

Right oh well now two Motors yeah how are we getting on here look look look look back she is smiling that me she smiling she’s laughing anything else oh how you get on really well yeah really well it’s shown me some really really handy things I mean so you can learn

You’ve learned something learned something oh that’s good I I think I can I can make mechanisms now right in these so is this work now there you go is that oh oh oh That is unbelievable that is brilliant and what would you do you would cover all of that is that yeah yeah well some people leave the mechanism exposed um okay you know some people cover it up it’s it’s entirely up to the maker really me Becky’s got time to kind of do

What she wants with it now yeah yeah I I really like to see all of this so I’m going to keep that yeah I love to see all that yeah and um I want to make more I want several next time I see it I want

To see that technology in there see the whole body yeah a full man we want working now yes no it’s lovely well done well done thank you thank you and thank you CH nice one no no pleasure J Becky can now return to Norfolk armed with all the skills to bring her

Creations to life and it’s time for David and Jay to celebrate the end of another great day with an ice cream it’s been a nice day is it yeah lovely this is a way to spend your day off is it yeah definitely you enjoying ice cream yeah you enjoying yours yeah yeah I

Am nice here though it very nice do you know what we should arrange it so we’re here every Sunday on a nice summer’s day sitting here having an ice cream you like that wouldn’t you yeah since visiting the toolshed Becky’s used her new skills to add more Motors to her

Autometer and she’s even given him a name roders Darren Darren and Oscar have moved on to their most ambitious project yet turning a helicopter into a glamping pod and Gordon shows no signs of taking things easy and is working hard to restore a fighter Jet I Seey Fore give me A To one of these motors how how do you attach those these are going to push into there and I’m going to have to I think I’m going to have to glue these once the the glue is warming up this little motor here at the back uh this is
